Waiting20/12, 27/12

27/12 David Seel Acts 1:4-8, Isa 40: Waiting.

This message is looking forward to next year. Be patient while God does His work in us. He is preparing us for what lies ahead. Every day we have a chance to wait. Traffic, flights, checkout, golf, whatever. It can be a good thing or a bad thing. An interview in 2014 for a school, didn't lead to a job. The placement work at Cumbernauld didn't feel right. It all seemed far away from where life should be leading. As God led his people, over time He transformed their outlook. 10 yrs later - still waiting. Only one letter was missing from application to work in America - still waiting, but lots happening. Still believing. God's Word will come to fruition. We must wait for God in whatever we are waiting for.
The process for a Christian is becoming who God wants us to be. Savour His promise by faith. Acts 1:4-8 He has a purpose for you, when the power comes. Isa 40:28-31 God is never weary... wait. As we wait on God, something happens in us. Phil 4:13, our strength is in Christ. Asking for patience will bring opportunities to be patient. Be patiently trusting. His timing may not match our expectations, but will be perfect.
God looks to see if we will trust Him. We easily get distracted and try to find our own solutions. When we wait on God we see He is in control. What do we do while we are waiting? Ps 130 only God can control when the sun comes up. As we wait we realise we can't do it; only God can. Mt 26;53,54 - only God. God will do what He says. Be confident in God. Let Him do His work. Say what you are meant to say, then stop talking. God's timing will bring the outcome.
Hab 2:1-3 watch, vision will come even if there's an apparent delay. The world waited for the moment for Jesus to appear among us. Fully believe and trust that God is working in you while you wait. Bamboo grows 1" in 5 yrs, then 90 ft in 90 days. Root structure is prepared ready to support the shoot. Isa; it is difficult to wait, it's easier to do the quick fix. If you want to soar, don't flap, don't glide (very limited). Few birds can soar, only the ones with strong wings. The Holy Spirit did come. God is the mover. We work and wait. Push the rock, God Will move. We will grow strong and wise.
2016 is close, focus on how you can wait on God. Be patient, let Him strengthen and grow you.

20/12 Alan Milnes Lk 2:1-7 Reflection.

The first Christmas was a real day. A day that was planned, the day of His appearing. It happened in a real city that still exists. A Saviour, we all need to be saved. Only God can forgive our sins. He is our hope. The Lord of Lords came to take away all our guilt, defeat our enemies and fill us with the hope of God's Kingdom to come.

20/12 Fr Gerry Hand Lk 1:26-38. A Meditation.

The crib contains the cross. Christmas is for all of us. Mary is a model disciple. She stilled herself before God then acted in faith and obedience. Be quiet, then act. Let God's Word and Spirit renew us. Be renewed in life and in community. Know God and the joy of doing the will of God. Let the Spirit show us where and how to reach out.

20/12 Paul Younger Matt 2:1-18. Wonders, warnings and worship.

We can be like the wise men and follow the star to find the child. Don't limit your worship by what you can afford. Come to worship with the best that you have. Don't be stuck on your throne, like Herod. Lay aside pride and get down and worship. Pride can lead to killing. Listen to the guidance God sends you.
Wonders At Christmas time we (like to think we) know the story so well, it's easy to miss some of the wonders that happened. The Star led the wise men right to the stable door. God guided their every step for hundreds of miles. He did it, it doesn't really matter how. Events that were foretold by Hosea and Jeremiah happened just as planned.
Warnings Dreams can alert us to danger: other signs can warn us to beware. God is actively involved in all His plans. The real warning is don't mess with God.
Worship Herod claimed to want to worship, but it was false worship. True worship - that comes from the heart.

13/12 Hugh Henderson Mt 28:16-20, Isa 6:1-8 Make Disciples.

Mission International (MI) update: Hugh just back from trip to Uganda. There has been much development since the early visits 18 yrs ago. The coffee bushes are now producing fruit at the coffee farm. Kabanda is now married. The Kitega project is giving respect and dignity to disabled people who were previously hidden away. There were school visits to Lugazi. Despite a low level of resources there is a high level of teaching. At the quarry, people labour breaking stones with a hammer. Capstone community is transforming lives.
Nelson and Florences wedding at 10 am started at 11:30. Haiti project is progressing; mainly visiting CofS Guilds at present. Big Meal is now in 13 countries at 20 locations. For the 1st time this year in Myanmar. Some big challenges as sharing the gospel in some countries is illegal.
Mt 28:16. This passage is a foundation of what MI is called to do. The disciples go to meet Jesus on the mountain. This is where the people of God would go to hear from Him; a significant encounter. It is important to go where Jesus is. v17 the disciples see Jesus and worship Him.
Isa 6:1 is the vision he saw of God. It produced a change in his life and had an impact on him. God lives in unapproachable light. Isa is greatly affected by this. He sees that God knows everything about him. All other problems became insignificant. he responds "I am ruined".
v8 prophecies Jesus response. The disciples begin to understand who Jesus is, they respond by worshipping. Doubt your doubts, trust the truth. Jesus declares who He is. Our authority is in Him. We must figure out what a disciple looks like. Teach them about the triune God. Train them in obedience. Find everything you need in scripture. Research what the Kingdom of God is. Jesus is always with us. When we go, He goes too.

6/12 Ryan Robertson Luke 1 Prepare the Way.

Luke tells how John the Baptist came to prepare the way. Theophilus, literally means 'a friend of God'. In Christ, we are also friends of God. God's plan is to bring us all back. Our place is in Him, to know His blessing. In v16 we read that many will be brought back.
It was while Zechariah was worshipping that the angel spoke God's message to him. We should realise by now that God will do what He says and we should not doubt. We must have faith and trust God. Our purpose is to serve God and lead the way for the gospel. How we live is a powerful advert for the good news. Rely and trust in God. Seek Holy Spirit. Don't let yourself become mute because of fear or doubt. Share what you believe.
John is the vessel preparing the way for Jesus v57. Elizabeth's time had come, John is born and the community celebrate together. Zechariah's tongue is finally released and he praises God. They're realising God is doing something. God's salvation is at hand. The evil of the world tries to overcome us. We face trials and opposition. Paul tells us to count it all joy.
The gospel is a personal message. We must share it on a personal level, 1:1. Take authority from God and His Word. His ways may be mysterious, but they are for our good - and His glory. His ways are special.
The people who heard Zechariah speak vv68-79 knew God's word and knew what he was speaking about. God's law that came through Moses was to help us. The gospel that came through Jesus is to help us. In all situations look for God's peace, direction and opportunities. The redeemer has come. Phil 2 at the name of Jesus. Christ is our light. We are new creations - 2 Cor 5:17. Look to eternity and the promise of God. How can I prepare the way for others to know the gospel? John was prepared in the desert; our preparation may happen during tough times. Hosea 6:3 - we can trust God, He is for us. Share what you can.

29/11 Dougie McGeachin 2 Cor 5:17 DNA

Lifeguards scan the people and the sea. They are ready to respond and act. We should be ready. We are inoculated against the urgency. One day there will be a whole lot of no more's (tears, pain, suffering), but for now we act.
2 Cor 5:17 talks of a new species of person on the earth. What does that look like? We are different. What is the key that makes this difference. What is the DNA of the church? God made man in his image. Adam is like God; our DNA helps us see what God is like.
The oneness of God is the unity of a community. There is no 1st, 2nd or 3rd person of the trinity. Only community, fellowship and support. The church is to be like Him. See yourself as part of this.
Sin, e.g. in Gen 5:3, damaged our DNA. God's plan hasn't changed. John relates Jesus telling Nicodemus to be born again. This is the restoration of our DNA. This is a community activity. All NT illustrations of church are living beings. The church is organic.
God is bringing us back to where we are all mobilised. Mutual respect, honour, support. No hierarchy... Divine truth, nurturing relationships, apostolic mission. We need to learn to function as God intended.
As we go, make disciples (the command is 'make', not 'go'). We have limited and confined all this within a box: the building, the staff, the programs, the budget.
Jesus will build His church, we make disciples. People hate God because the church is not doing what it should. The church is to equip the saints. We need a change of mindset.
2 Tim 2:2 Paul's last letter. This message will last when I'm gone. Teach it to others. This is our challenge. Are we only purveyors of religious goods and services? We are called to multiplication not just addition. Reset to the manufacturer settings. Build church around the new believers. Stop going to church, start being church. Explore/find intentional ways to reach out.
A very small %age of people in the world are fit and healthy. In Church a few people do most of the activity. A local church is only as good as it's disciples. The mark of a good church is not the worship, the pastor or the structures - it's the dicipleship. Invest in people who are willing to listen and work with you.
Life Transformation Groups (LTG), 3 people max, confidential confession (exhaling), consistent reading the Word (inhaling), regular prayer for 3 people to come to faith.

22/11 Jim Neilson Mk 13:14-27. Idoaltry.

The abomination is mentioned 3 times in Daniel. Mark's gospel was written to the Roman church. This passage refers to an idolatrous symbol set up in the temple. In AD 70 the Romans burned the temple and installed the image of caeser. The caesars considered themselves gods. They were an abomination to Jews.
The temple cult has been destroyed. Heb 10:22 draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith. Remove idolatry from your own heart Ex 20:4,5. Our relationship with God is important.
How can we be harmonious and meet each others needs? How can we prepare each other for eternity? Our relationship with God is more important than any earthly one. Mk 13 is really a warning about idolatry. Can we bless those we meet? Only those who have faith are the true Israel. Beware of all events in Israel.
When Jesus returns everybody will see Him. Our age is awash with ideas and opinions. It is OK to disagree, peaceably. Ambition is a good thing. Ronaldo (setting up his own museum) is following the way of Nebuchadnezer. There are signs in our society that erode the truth and are against God and the gospel.
If you want to live in the Kingdom you have to learn it's ways. 1 Pet set your heart on God. Be clear about what you believe. Son of man, Dan 7, a title for Jesus. Various opinions abound regarding full meaning of all signs. The emphasis is to guard your heart. Know the reasons for your faith. In Mt 28, Jesus says "all authority is given". This is a fact. The only command is to make disciples. So, as you go, make disciples. Jesus presence is already guaranteed. Get grounded in your faith and your relationship with God.

16/11 Andrea Mill Jn 4:1-42. A Little can have a big effect.

The trip to India was fruitful. Others had already sown seeds that were now being harvested. Jesus gave them the right words to say at the right time. God's grace also supplemented any perceived lack of spiritual preparation. It was a team of 6 women. They saw extremes of poverty & wealth. Mumbai has 22 million inhabitants. Lots of them are migrants and it is very busy. 19% are Muslim, ?% Hindu with only 4% Christian.
A drop in the ocean in God's hands can make a big difference. Oasis focus their care on the most vulnerable people : James 1:27 gives a definition of true religion. Great fear resides in the victims of trafficking : the pimps & the prostitutes are all likely to have been trafficked.
There are education programmes to help them to get jobs. They have counselling & Church services. A half-way house for girls supports them until they get accomodation after coming out from hostels. (These hostels are where they are held after police raid brothels for under 18 yr-olds).
There is a drop in centre in red light district. Here they hold times of prayer & ministry, mainly for the staff who have been giving out helping the girls. There is also a Day care centre for children.
There were times of teaching and ministry ; mainly deliverance. Massages and beauty therapies were given (and received!). The team flew to Goa. God provided people at various places to assist them and show them to the places they were looking for. They held worship in Hindi and English. All the girls received Jesus (a few may have received Him previously). They had a tremendous time of fun at the beach playing and falling in the waves.
On leaving Goa they visited the Purnata ministry centre where the gave presents to the children. There were lots of Nepalese girls there (their lighter skin was worth more in the brothels).
At the YMCA @ Nilshu, in the hills, they ministered peace through prayer, played games and other activities. Mainly they listened to girl's and women's their stories. These women often have no choice, sell their bodies or face starvation. The children are just victims. A drop in the ocean can have a big ripple effect. The team realised it was important to share Jesus, not the church.

8/11 Harry Sprange Rom 8:28 True Meaning.

The Bible is inspired, our aim should be to get to the real meaning. 1 Tim 2:4, 2 Tim 2:14. There is a danger in mis-translation. Jerome translated the NT into Latin in 500 AD. Lots of Gk manuscripts were destroyed. The Latin version is less accurate, but is the basis of Roman Catholicism.
What is God really saying? KJ Acts such as being saved. Basis of Episcopalian tradition. 1516 Erasmus edited Gk NT. Luther & reformation based on. Rom 8:28 God works in / for good. Jerusalem Bible is a good translation. God works with us, rather than the fatalistic for us. God is working in His world Jn 5. Jesus also 10:25. The disciples Jn 14:10 also work. We work too 1 Cor 15. We are judged on our works. 1 Pet, 1 Cor. We have work to do Eph 2:10, Col bearing fruit. There is a judgement: Rev 21 everyone before the throne - what did we do with Jesus? 2 Cor 5. The judgment seat of Christ, rewards for work. Gen : man created to work with God. Toil comes after the fall. New creations; work and pray for the Kingdom. We are sent by Jesus to work for Him. 2 Pet 3:12 speed up the day of Jesus. What evidence is there that the Word of God is priority in our lives? Don't allow intimacy with God to trivialise or let us think He will do it all. God works with those who love Him.

1/11 David Seel Mat 25:14-30. Faithfulness leads to fruitfulness.

We develop and learn on the journey. Faithfulness leads to fruitfulness. School football team dynamic - sometimes it's easier to quit. Sometimes your boss is a nightmare or the job is not for you. Do you just walk away?
Pioneer 10 to Jupiter. Predicted to fail or fall short of objectives. It was supremely successful, passed Pluto and continued transmitting for 6 million miles on 8 watts of power. What can God do with the least of us?: nothing if we quit.
Don't complain about what you didn't do. Jn 15:5 - bear much fruit. Mat 25:14-30. Faithfulness produces fruit. God looks for faithfulness, not success. Work at what you do. Make investments, use your abilities.
What God achieves in us while we are 'waiting' is more important than what we are being prepared for. Heb 10:36 - persevere. 2 Cor 12:9. When we are at our weakest, God is strongest. It is better to wait for God's timing. In some ways we are not all equal. We have different abilities. We all need to work. We work for the Master. We overcome the challenges. He has set where we will be. Be available for the opportunities that arise where you are, wherever you are on the journey. Have a conversation with someone! It's about relationship. Let Him use you wherever you go.
We are accountable, don't waste the opportunity. Faithfulness is doing what God wants you to do. Feed one person, talk to one person... Persevere to see the fruit. Work to see lives changed. The seeds must be developed. Lk 16:10 be responsible in small matters, Prov 3:8. Rev 2:10, be faithful. Faithfulness produces fruit.

11/10 Paul Younger Ps. 23 The Lord.

Started preaching 35 yrs ago. Revisiting after 20 yrs. Familiarity > indifference. Look at these verses afresh. The Lord; how do we see Him? Do we revere Yahweh and Adoni, Jehovah? This is a special name for almighty God. He is close to us, provides for and protects us.
Ps 80. He is a personal Shepherd. He ensures there is nothing that we lack. He knows you so well He supplies the little things. Sheep don't worry, they trust the shepherd.
We are spiritual and physical beings. Ps 42 our greatest spiritual need is for Him. He meets all our needs. He restores places within us that nothing else can reach. He is goodness, righteousness and security. He is with us, we can face anything and not fear it. Satan is already defeated. God's light can penetrate any darkness. His weaponry are a match for any adversary. His provision is much greater than necessities, it's a feast. Oil is a sign of favour, privilege.
We are chosen and belong to Him. He is more than we imagine. God's provision is complete. We will remain with Him forever.

4/10 Alan Milnes Heb 10:1-18 God's Gifts

God has given many gifts to the Church (His people), including prophecy and interpretation. Up until Jesus' time there was no seat in the place of ministry for the High Priest. His job was never finished. Jesus completed His work. We are in this 'now', but not yet time. We live in this tension of this prophetic word. Holy Spirit reminds us of God's Word.
OT prophets were God's messengers: Hag 1:3, 2 Sam, Jer 1:9. The OT prophets spoke God's Word directly. They had a solemn responsibility to get it right or be stoned. NT is different; Joel's prophecy spoke of this where many/all would prophecy. The prophet is now anyone who speaks. Gal 1, Paul is sent by God. Eph 2, Rom: this is about people speaking their words that were inspired by God, rather than God's direct instruction.
Acts 21 Agabus prophecies to Paul. It was on the right track although some details were not correct. What is valid prophecy today? Apostolic calling is still relevant and prophetic anointing still occurs now.
Practicalities: Don't be distracted by titles. Prophecy is continuing for now. When God stops speaking you should stop as well. Think why God is telling you something. Don't scare people off. Prophecy is for building up, not tearing down or destroying. Listen for His word, consider carefully how or when you share it. This is spiritual warfare.

27/9 Alan Seel Jn 6:1-13 How can God use you?

Stuff happens and we need to deal with it. All of us are called to reach out to people, helping them and introducing to Jesus. How can God use you? We must be available and willing to use the gifts we have.
Jn 6:1-13 loaves and fish. The boy had something to give and was willing to forfeit his lunch. Know where you are and where you are going. Get to know where we are in God. Be near Jesus. He withdrew with His disciples. Being involved with friends and family and fellowship is good, but we need to be close to Him. Live life in the presence of Jesus. Worship to welcome His presence.
Be aware of what is happening around you. Know when God is testing you. Learn when he wants you to see spiritually rather than naturally. Sense when you are in the right place at the right time.
Jesus received the small offering. Be available. How far can natural resources go? 2 Kings 4 the small jar of oil filled every available receptacle. God can use what we have. Willingly offer what you have. Time, skills, resources can all be offered. The key is to be willing. This leads us to the exciting things God will do. This is how to release the things God will do. God is generous and bountiful. God is only limited when we hold back. Be bolder. How much do we want God to move in our lives and situations. We can tap into His resources.
We have to position ourselves to engage with people to connect them to the things God wants to do. Step into the extraordinary.

20/9 Richard Hobson Eph 1:11-15. Our Purpose

How are you doing? Do we refer to our income or status or well being? All these are significant, but how are we in the important things. What preoccupies us? Does the BBC know? Is it migrants or sports results?
Our lives have purpose - this is the most important thing. Eph 1:11 our main purpose is for the praise of His glory. Is this too much for us? Don't wait for things to get better. Paul had more struggles and testing than we will encounter. He is not saying that we will have a smooth, pristine life. God's purpose can be fulfilled in the difficulties. A full Christian life can be lived anywhere, anytime, any circumstance. The cost may be more in some situations. We can honour God in all circumstances.
Living for God's glory is magnifying His grace and praise. This is the fruit of God in our lives. There is no pretence in this. We need to understand this grace. Col 1;3 God gives the faith and love. It's nothing to do with us. It's a spiritual understanding. Eph 1:15 He reveals and imparts wisdom. Your heart will be enlightened. Eph 2:8 nothing is our merit.
When the root of grace is in our lives we will be fruitful. We will not worry about basics. God knows our needs. Rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Be content with food and clothing, focus on rejoicing in His glory. Don't become exhausted with food and clothing. Do we trust God enough to surrender to Him. Live for His glory. Let Him be your hope. We are made for and called to this.

13/9 Dougie McGeachin Acts 17:1-12 Turning the world upside-down.

A challenging appeal to take a real good look at how we do church. By Acts 17, Paul has planted 5 churches. He preaches Christ from the OT. Another church is started. The men who have turned the world upside down v6. Why are we not having the same impact? (We have the same Spirit, Word and power in us!) Can we discover the hidden power within each of us? What will we change to see this happen?
By end of first 100 yrs from the birth of Jesus there were 25,000 believers. By AD 310 there were 20 million believers. It was an illegal religion which had no buildings or institution. This growth was not intended only as a kick start to the birth of the Church.
Church growth in China was opposed by Mao. Yet it had flourished despite the oppression, without buildings or Bibles. The Garden, the Cross. Many years passed from what Adam lost until Jesus restored. Satan hijacked the church through Roman Emperor Constantine. The church was growing very fast. Once it became state controlled, it lost all it's power.
Today we are still affected by pagan influence on the church. We are to take over the world. There should be no division between sacred and secular. The power that dramatically changed the early & Chinese church is still available. When there is discipleship there is a movement. We should be incarnational. HS is in us. Get out and mix with the needy and downtrodden.
People don't need religion, they need their hearts warmed. Show them that the Kingdom is here. We believe Mt 28:19, but we don't do it. This is not about words, but being an example. Find ways to simplify and speak naturally. Get a strategy. Lk 10:1-6. Why send 70? (This is more than likely all who were there.) They are all workers and no one was exempt. Everyone has to work in the harvest. Get out from our restrictions. The mission of Jesus will not be fulfilled in meetings. The sower is important. There is nothing wrong with the seed. Share your life and resources. The attractional model doesn't really work.
Jesus used a sending method. Go and bear fruit. We can build up one another, but Jesus builds the church. Multiplication is better than addition. Where is the witness in each community? Manifest the power of God through our lives. God gives opportunities to us.
Don't be ruled by fear. Eph 4 - all ministries are needed. Only pastors/teachers leading the Church is un-balanced. Jesus taught on the way. Be radical in your discipleship. Jesus and Paul trained people. Find practical ways to develop sharing your faith. Ensure this is not the place of Ichabod : the place where the glory of the Lord has departed.

6/9 Hugh Henderson Revelation 1,2. Church Health Check.

Revelation is a cryptic message from God, through John to the Church. It is a book of the revelation of God (not a number of revelations). It is significant. We are also to live as though Jesus return is imminent. Jesus is prophet, priest & king.
Note God's description of the church: all the believers together. We tend to think of buildings or denominations. We are called to be light. Ch 2. This is a report of health of the church in several cities and everyone saw all the others reports. Do His work for His purposes. Believe and act. Otherwise God will return you to darkness.
This is a new way. Jews become Christians & Gentiles become Christians (not Jews). Nicolas was polygamous and lorded it over others; his followers copied his attitudes and lifestyle. 1 Pet 5:3 be a good example. Don't live contrary to God's way, look after each other. Overcome the trials of the current times, v7.
We have no rights, we are asked to live for Christ where ever he places us. Be obedient, not demanding. Look after the alien in your land.

30/8 Harry Sprange Acts 4:21-31 The Christian life.

The Christian life is supernatural. Jesus did not just leave his instructions for us to follow. Christianity is not about being good, it's about being obedient to God. When Holy Spirit releases power we are to go out and do what we are called to.
Is the power of God in us some thing that is frightening for others? Paul (Ch 14) did many signs and wonders and challeged people's beliefs and understanding. Acts 19:12 etc, there were many diverse miracles. It's not our efforts, but the power of God through us.
Jesus challenges lack of faith and unbelief. Our call is to obedience. What are we expecting from Jesus? Are we doing Church without God? When we lose faith we turn to human effort. Faith is defined in Heb 11; it's being certain of what God is going to do.
Leaving Egypt after 400 years, trapped by the Red sea, Moses said to stand and see God's deliverance. Joshua believed God would look after them. David threatened Goliath, based on God's assurance.
Stating what God will do before He does it - that's faith. David, Jesus and Peter do this - Acts 9, Peter tells the girl to get up. Jesus commands with authority. Mk 11:23. Don't doubt. GK Chesterton, when people stop believing in God, they don't believe nothing they believe anything.
The Apostles' have faith in what God will do. Pray until you know what God is saying, then do it. Repent of lack of faith. Rom 14:23 describes sin as everything that is not faith. We should stop relying on human effort.

23/8 Jim Neilson Mk 13:1-13 Signs of the end.

In those days life was very local, news from far off took a long time to reach them. This is the announcement of the apocalypse. Jesus' disciples ask when will it happen.
The temple was the most magnificent building. It was a symbol of God's presence. The very church system they knew was being renewed. They were becoming the new building.
We should beware of the traditions of our age. New expressions of church are emerging. Is what we are doing still relevant?
Discipling is equipping people for mission - in their context. Jesus warns them not to be deceived. In ths age there are multiple digital stories to believe. Basic Bible knowledge is sparse, but people are still looking for meaning.
We must know the story and live it out. People can dismiss what we say, but they can't deny the changes in our lives. Make it relevant to today. Be consistent, expect questions.
We hear of wars, v7. What is our response to atrocities and immigrants? How do we help these fellow humans? These are the beginnings of adversities, v8. There is struggle and pain, but something is being birthed. God has a plan and purpose.
Our story is one that brings hope to a searching world. It is a fantastic, unbelievable story. God loves people and has plans for them all. We must not get distracted. Something good is coming. We should be alert.
The temple was destroyed by the Romans only 40 yrs later. There was much persecution. Our strength is our testimony. God is reconciling the whole world. Confess in the midst of persecution. Engage with people, not their ailment or predicament.
There are opportunities to share your testimony, be natural, but persevere. Do your bit; let God do His bit. It's God's world, he is working in it. Things are being birthed.

16/8 Ryan Robertson Rom 5:1-11. Salvation.

What does salvation guarantee us? What can I offer? Salvation is no longer just for the Jews. Despite our sinfulness we are considered righteousness. We should boast more about our salvation. Acknowledge your faith publicly. Be assured God is with you. We will see His glory when we allow God to use us. We can also boast about our sufferings. Proclaim God's goodness.
We struggle with the life's difficult situations. We can also see how God works and stays with us through it all. Speak wisely; sometimes we just comfort and get along side people. Show you care. God cares, v5. He cares through HS and through Jesus. He gave his life for each of us. Only Christianity has a saviour who died for us.
How often do we give ourselves to pray? Fellowship with Him frequently. The more we communicate with God the more we will reflect Him. Do we really know God? Once we were enemies of God. God has completely redeemed us. He has put a perfect plan in place for each one of us. The HS is involved in every step of God's purpose for us. Be ready for the situations God puts you in.

9/8 Paul Younger Acts 26:24-32.A 'masterful performance'

Biblical names. Festus inherited an awkward problem. How to solve it? Paul is invited to share his story and proceeds to give his testimony. The governor finds it all too much. Paul refutes the charge of insanity and confirms its authenticity. Paul remains rational and proceeds to appeal to this audience. He affirms the King and eliminates the opportunity for a negative response. The King tries for come back at Paul, but Paul turns it round again. Paul is the master evangelist: even in chains and on trial. Paul realises evangelism is based on prayer as well as discussion and debate. Paul is innocent.

2/8 Andrea Mill Psalm 34. (The Passion translation.) Relationships, God's goodness.

Written after David escaped from Saul. Jonathan tips David off and he has to flee. Gath is where he defeated Goliath, but he was afraid of Abimilech and acts mad. How would I react? Would I write a praise song and worship Him?
God is always worthy, there's always something to thank or praise Him for. We could choose to be discouraged. There is hope in His Word. David shows us this is a healthy thing to do. We often try our own solutions then turn to God. Trust that God will deliver us.
People who spend time with God are radiant, they glow. Even if things don't change we can find peace. Call, God hears v6,7. Angels minister to us. Expect God to respond. Remember how He came through for you in the past. Blessing is what God does, but we need to run to Him. Fear of the Lord. Give Him respect. There is provision for those who seek God.
Listen v13,14 there is more we can do to engage with God to know His blessing. Control your tongue. Avoid evil. Banish negativity. Work through differences. We need Him to help us, our strength is not enough. God is close to broken-hearted v18. He has the power to lift you up. He is with us in the reality of daily living. When we come to Him, He Gives us protection. Can you see the example of Jesus in all this Ps? Expect God to help when we turn to Him.
Mt 28:30 we don't need to struggle. Learn His ways. Mt 6, God provides when we go to Him. Trust Him. Live for now without worrying about what could happen. Look at the evidence from the past. God is working things out in the spiritual realm.
The devil was defeated at the cross. Live life telling the story to others. Battles rage all around us, we can overcome with His strength. God cares about our reality. He wants us to come to Him and He wants to be involved with us. We can be passionate about each other.

26/7 Allan Weir Acts 2:37-47. Fear and Holiness.

We long to experience the fellowship and growth and signs and wonders. We desire a sense of awe. They feared the Lord. This is good for the church and the world.
Ex 19 faith enabled Moses to enter while the others ran. 1 Jn 4:18. Get the revelation of who God really is. John fell at His feet on Patmos. Do we have that sense of awe?
He fills creation. Our understanding of Him is so limited. We need the eyes of our hearts opened again. He is more than our perception. God is holy, it's His nature. This is glorious beautiful and frightening. We are called to holiness. We're drawn to him. Col 1:22 we are called to live holy lives. This is not about abstaining. We have a new nature that is righteousness and holy. Holiness is living and being alive in the Holy Spirit. This produces a healthy church.
Acts 9:31 fearing God, the church will increase. Faith, fear of God and love go together. Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira. God's revelation draws people. It leads us to God. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
What is life actually about? We have been too busy making God accessible instead of looking for His revelation. The gospel takes man up to His level. We have tried to bring Him to our level. God's word transforms lives. The fear of the Lord comes from an authentic revelation.

19/7 Harry Sprange Mk 10:45. Redemption.

Mk 10:45 Jesus as a ransom. 1 Tim 2:6. Money paid for setting someone free. Redemption comes 10 times in NT. Only 8 times in Gk literature. Rev 5:9 men purchased. Gal 3 times 3:13,14 & 4:5.
What is redemption? A reference to slavery in Egypt. Were they delivered from Egypt/Egyptians or God's wrath? Many references in Eph, Gal, Heb, Cor. We have been paid for. The blood is Jesus' life.
Who has been paid? It is not Jesus settling with the Father. We are freed from sin. Rom 6 is about freedom from sin, no mention of forgiveness. If we are free from sin, there is no forgiveness required. Do we believe we are free? Isa 38 all our sins have been removed. Ps 103. Jn 1, the Lamb of God who takes away our sin. Heb 10: there is no need to offer any more sacrifices. Rev 1, we are loved and free. Heb 9:15 we are set free.
Sin costs. The issue with sin is not punishment, but the cost of the consequences must be met. Once redeemed, do not even think to return to former ways.

28/6 David Seel Dan 3. Faith and trial.

Walking at 6 am has opened up opportunity. Same theme has been developing for a while. Even if it's something that has been shared before. Faith and trial; trust. What can we be 100% certain about today? Jn 16:33 take heart. Don't lose faith. The trials we face fall into unanswered prayer. The People test, relationships are not the main issue. The Stress test, who will we lean on? Ps 50:15. 1 Pet 3:1 it will develop us. A faith tested is a faith that can be trusted.
Dan 3. The young men in the fire. v4-6, When testing is going on people are watching. Faith is about following God instead of society/culture. The church should not cave in and not panic. Sin is always an issue.
V16 the men do not need to defend themselves. We weigh up the pro's and cons. Resolve within yourself how to deal with the issues. What are the options. Do we cover it up, wriggle out or do what you have determined. The solution may appear extreme.
V17 be obedient, let God determine the outcome. When you get a bad medical report, believe God for the outcome. The miracle baby is a testimony to God's goodness. Relationships can be restored. He can reconcile in ways we wouldn't imagine. No matter what we see, we can act in faith. What if God doesn't do what I'm hoping for.
V18 the final outcome is His to determine. We know the end, they had no idea how it would work out.
V24,25 God reveals his power - they knew His presence in the fire. They were not in the fire alone. There was nothing clinging to them from the situation.
V28 the king worships God. The start of a church. Talk about what we are for! Faith that is tested can be trusted. Obedience, believing, faithful.

21/6 Paul Younger Ps 42,43. Longing for God.

Changes to education system in England. A-F pass grades are becoming 1-9. This is really just one Psalm. It could be rated 'D'. There is no division. There are recurring themes. Desire ; wanting something or someone really badly. Do we long for God like this. Pascal: a god shaped vacuum in the heart of every man.
Despair: depression, why are you downcast? God knows how we are feeling when we experience this. We can remember the good times but they seem remote. The root cause is a sense of great distance from God. Jesus felt this. Holding on with finger tips.
Deliverance; there's hope in God. Jesus is the way. Know that the answer is in God, no matter how things seem. Consciously trust God. Paul learned the same truth, pray at all times. We all go through these times.

14/6 Bee Roy. GROW Lk18:15-16. Jesus mission to children and young people.

The vision is for the gospel in high schools. Employed by Grow Trust, managed by SU. Lk18:15-16 Jesus mission to children and young people. Not just a job, a mission.
  1. Pray for them. Seek HS.
  2. Religious Observance in schools. Leadership lessons - Jesus was a great leader. RME lessons, a real understanding of Christianity. SU discussing the issues and studying the Bible. Serving the staff team.
  3. Relationships with God, a mentor, a peer group, celebration and encouragement events. God is working in all these situations. Tim 4:12, train and grow the next leaders. Invest in young people. Bless and support all aspects of mission to all people. Baking for parents meetings or whatever...

7/6 Alan Seel Gen 28:10-22. Is your faith alive and well?

We are living in God's economy. Are we experiencing an open heaven? We have full life in Jesus.
Jacob is on the run in Gen 28:10-22, yet God promises great blessing. Jacob decides to take God at his word. The Angels were going on assignment and returning for more instructions. Ez 1:1 a glimpse of heaven. Other's also caught a brief view of heaven. Matt 3:13 heaven opened.
Jesus was the fulfilment of Jacob's vision. Heaven is eternal, it didn't just arrive when Jesus came. We too can carry this continually. Nathaniel was also given this promise from Jesus. Stephen walked in this, but it was an offence to people. Peter, Acts 10.
Some saw it but didn't push through. Set your heart and interact with God. Our attitude can close the door, when it should be open. We should rejoice that heaven is open. We are more open to Holy Spirit. We all need more of God in our lives. Keep praying for God to move, He is always ready to act. Exercise prophetic gifting, seek God's purpose. God is only limited by our response. The angels are still working doing God's will. Pray, unlock the door of heaven.
Obedience and humility ensure heaven is open for the things we want to see. Sacrifice, giving to others. Keep clean and pure. Daily walk is paramount to keeping door of heaven open. God's resources are available to us. Realise what God is doing. Use the authority you have been given. It is available for us. Increase your faith, build your confidence.
Jesus opened the door; it has not closed. We have a message of hope for ourselves and for others. Are we willing to walk through the door instead of looking through the window?

31/5 Richard Hobson Psalm 42. Try to understand the context of well known verse 1.

A deer panting for water is close to death, this is a desperate situation! This song is for instruction and wisdom. Not simply a depressing Psalm. We know devastating things happen in life. This is how we know how to relate to God in these circumstances.
What do we consider as blessing? Inward turmoil can be worse than outward suffering. Tough times can be exacerbated after great times in the presence of God's people. This Ps is not about the situation.
How do we respond to God instead of the circumstances. Identify what is the important thing to do, who do we go. Our first prayer is usually for God to fix it quickly. Our real need is to meet with Him. Here there is no request for a change to the circumstances.
Remember, v4, the good things about God. Don't doubt in the dark what you have learned in the light. Don't nullify the past. Remembering is a spiritual activity. High water marks are to help us see the present is all there is.
The psalmist knows why he is down. Current reality is a flimsy reflection of reality. Fuel your hope in Him. He is Everlasting. God, v7, is in control. We must allow God to be sovereign in our lives. There is no point praying if you believe that. God's love is never changing. He is true to His promises and commands.
The psalmist is honest with God, but continues to pray. Keep the truth about God before you. Speak to your soul. We get down by listening to ourselves instead of speaking to ourselves. The main point of this psalm is God, not the trouble. Don't wait for dire straights before turning to God. He is the rock & Salvation.

24/5 Ryan Robertson Jn 14:16,17 Significance of Holy Spirit.

He is the breath put into Adam. He will convict us. He raises issues in our lives we would rather ignore. He is gentle and loving.
The gifts are wonderful, but salvation is the most wonderful. In Acts chapter 2 there were 3,000 people saved. We are very excited at first but our enthusiasm falls away. We think we can overcome the world in our own strength. There comes a time when we must return to basics.
Seek God. Realise the extent of your failings, but recognise that God is forgiving. Remain in fellowship. Feed on the Word. Exercise your faith. HS also teaches us. Follow His guidance. Don't ask for too many confirmations. He has set us free. Ps 1:1-2 Meditate on His Word. Josh 1:8 Israel had no king or leader. Jesus is the ultimate king. Let HS lead you. We are the branches in the vine. Journey on in faith. Pray for HS to lead you and for the right words to say.

17/5 Hugh Henderson Rev 2:1-7 A Church health report.

Focus of Mission International teams is changing: more teaching & discipleship. Nigerian (false) pastors are taking religious advantage of other countries selling 'holy' oil for extortionate sums. MI teams going to Uganda and Haiti. The earthquakes caused much devastation in Haiti. The whole country is very poor, worse than most of Africa. "Rest-avecs" (stay-withs) are essentially child slaves. A new combined church, school and community centre is being built. Church Guilds are supporting this project (potential £100,000). Uganda team will experience a lively active church and powerful testimonies at "Dwelling Places" for destitute children. Solid Rock school. Raising up hope for Uganda. Arua children carry water and not able to go to school. A security trainer found children chained up, screaming. Need wheelchairs for disabled children.
Tanzania is vast, 2 day trip to leadership training for 40 pastors. Rwanda 6 hrs by bus to Kigali. Shool projects. Well funded and very well run. Sponsored girl went on to become circuit judge of all Kigali. Pray for transitions ahead.
Rev 2:1-7 a direct message to the Ephesians. 2 chr 16:9 God is checking. His eyes and ears are attentive. He has been known to turn His face against evil people. God sees the heart, 1 Sam 16:7 and beyond the physical. Rev 2 is a health check report on the church. None of these churches continue to exist. The letter is addressed to 1 church but is read by and applied to everyone. It is open honest circular letter to all. Their achievements are noted. Cf Martha and Mary.
Who are the wicked? Those who oppose God and His People. Ps 29:1 test me for any wicked ways. Evil works against God. God is scanning the church. How do we test for true saints: by their fruit. Titus 1:1 the pastors keep the flock on the right path. Apostles have a particular gifting. v3 perseverance is a high compliment. This process of review includes the first love. The Nicolaitans were heretics and not welcome by the church.
What is it we need to do? Remember, repent, do. Isa 46 worship, change direction, act. Jesus is the answer. Servants do what their master asks. He began a good work & will complete it. He will call you back when you go the wrong way. There's great joy awaiting for us. Jude 24,25. Respond to His report.

10/5 Harry Sprange Acts 1:7-11 Ascension

Updates: The clear result in UK general election was an answer to prayer. Email from Nepal; a number of close escapes, but many Christians died in Church due to time of earthquake.
Pentecost is a rare Christian festival that has not been taken over by secular celebration. Ascension day was Jesus opening the way for the coming of Holy Spirit. What did Jesus do after Easter? 1 pet 3:19 Jesus released saints from hades or place of sleep. Acts 1 He appeared to many. All gospels record different accounts. 40 days that proved He was alive. He continues to prepare the disciples for His departure and return to the Father. The world thinks he is dead. His followers see Him. He taught that he would return to the Father from earth.
Acts 1:7-11 cf gospels. How did Mark know Jesus was seated at the right hand of the Father. Ps 110. Eph 1. Phil 2:9. Heb 1:3,13, 1 cor 15, Heb 10:12 The multiple references indicate the importance of this. The point is that 1) He is preparing a place for us. [North Africa in gap year, Harry stranded at airport, so relieved to finally see friend]. 2) Jesus has to leave so Holy Spirit can come. Jesus wanted this to happen soon.
Eph 4 the people given to the Church are different from the Spiritual gifts given to the people. Heb 7:24, 8:1, 9:24. Rom 8 He is interceding for us. Seek the things above, our life is hidden in Christ. Live at a higher level than we can see with our eyes.

3/5 Dougie McGeachin Gal 4:4-5. Redemption

10yrs working @ Vale of Leven hosp, went recently as patient due to irritation in eyes. Infections are no respector of persons. People need to be infected with the gospel. Expect to be used by God. Mega Church is not the answer. Eph 1:7 we are redeemed now. Redemption provides the believer with the resources he needs to overcome the devil. Adam gave his authority to the devil.
Gen 3:15 (the first gospel) the first mention of the seed of the woman that will destroy the enemy. When Adam sinned it was also a spiritual death. God found a way to put life back into mankind. He did this legally, through one who was fully human and fully God. God started with Abraham and worked through a line of faithful people.
Gal 4:4-5. Through God's plan the redeemer comes. He becomes the curse that we receive the promise. He was obedient to death. Many thought God was punishing Jesus. He paid the price for sin. How could Jesus know the plan would work? He trusted the Father and walked by faith. Eph 4:18 God satisfied all spiritual justice. People go to hell by their own choice. We have the right to make our own choices daily. Jesus paid the price at every point in His life.
Heb1:8 Jesus took all the keys from Satan: death, sickness, disease. We are redeemed for God's plan & purpose. God wants us to be priests, living with the Spirit inside us, witnessing to His goodness.

26/4 Jim Neilson. Mk12:35-44. Example

We live in an increasingly complex world. There are no fixed religious convictions. There’s a mush; everything is relative. We must respect others, we cannot offend anyone. Truth is now generally viewed as an abstract concept. God gives us freedom: freedom to choose. He wants no one to perish. Despite the current waves in society, those who believe in Him are not washed away in the tide. Jesus is at work through the Church (and at times despite the Church). He was dead and now He is alive. Jesus is the answer.
Theology - we all have a flawed theology. Our minds are limited. This does not stop the world being full of ‘experts’. Jesus is challenging these experts in the law, not on their knowledge of genealogy, but their thinking on the deity of the Messiah. Jesus was known as ‘The Son of David’. This passage also alludes to the Trinitarian nature of God. Our thinking is not more important than the Word. We only get a small glimpse of reality.
There are challenges to traditional beliefs: God is not in absolute control of everything, doubt is not a bad thing. Dogma is what all believers subscribe to, general facts about the faith. Doctrine is the way we act on the things we believe and can be different in various parts of the Church e.g. baptism. Opinion is very different between members of the same Church and can cause upset and create division between people. We should adopt humility and admit our lack of understanding. Our theology is an evolving process. Jesus challenges everyone’s thinking; He challenges our thinking.
Praxis is what we do with what we believe. Theology should transform us and we should not just talk about it, we should walk it out. Colossians urges us to not to walk in worldly ways but to walk in the spirit.
Example: as Christians, people are watching you, ready to judge you. Be more righteous than the Pharisees. Take life as it comes. God is not limited by other people’s failings. Theology is important but we must live it out. The widow gives her life, her all. God is not impressed with showy-ness. Examples are important, but they must be based on good practice from sound theology.

19/4 Rev David Seel. Mk5:21-43. Faith over Fear

Without a relationship with God, life and Church would be boring. He is in every part of our lives. After 10 years of living with a fear of failure, particularly for a competitive person, on 3rd career; what is my calling? Leaving a legacy for the children. Not just financially. We tend to stumble from one event/calmity, overcoming then dealing with the next one. Why is a full time evangelist not out on the streets? God uses you in the workplace. He uses you wherever He puts you. It might not look like we thought it would, but God will be using us. Don't predict or limit the outcome. Let God determine it.
What is the ultimate dream or vision for me? Does life get in the way, do we become negative & leave God out. Mk5:21-43 v36 tells us "Don't be afraid, only believe".
The man Jairus, the woman, Jesus and the little girl are on the journey together. It is interrupted. We just want the job done. God's timing is usually different from ours. Life can be hard and the more we work at it, the worse it gets. There is nothing that we take to God that He will deny us. Jesus knows God's plan. He trusts the Father, we can trust Him to. Faith is the only antidote to fear. Continue the journey with Jesus.
What does God see, what is the truth? Jesus deals with situations by speaking powerfully. Are we saying, "yeah, but"? God has more options than we can even imagine. God never leaves people in the same condition He finds them. He has the power to change.
Know where to position yourself to change your condition. Come to Him for rivers of living water. Do what He says to do, don't think about other options. Seek first...
Our circumstances do not limit our outcomes. Let Jesus be the centre. God has a plan. He is in control. Nothing is wasted. Questions in your mind may already be answered and resolved by God. Shift your position so God can move you to where He wants you to be. What thing do I want God to move on? Pray & meditate on this for 1 week. Think about others. Make their burdens lighter. Be more in front of Jesus so that He can show you what He wants.

12/4 Andrea Mill. Ps 119:1-48. Discipleship

Jesus is here, what is my request? What does my passport entitle me to? Phil 3:1- 4:1. Paul was called to Philippi. It was a Roman colony. Paul was beaten ∧ flogged. Paul loved the people there. He writes to them in an emotional and involved way. There were issues then as there are now. He reminds them of what is important. We should focus on our future and our calling. This may require healing, so that we can lay down the hurts of the past. God can bring us through many trials.
We are citizens of heaven. We learn the culture and traditions. We are influenced & affected by those around us and the things we see. We also have an effect on those around us. Ambassadors are supposed to work for peace. Diplomatic immunity is not a licence to sin. As citizens of heaven we give up our earthly rights in exchange for heavenly benefits.
We all have a general calling to follow Christ. Do we realise what is now required of us? We should look after the welfare of others. Phil 2 shows us the attitude of Christ Jesus. Consider the interests of others, be humble. Shine like stars. We have a job to direct and influence our society. We can know and bring the peace of Christ into situations. Be joyful. Practice the things you see and learn. Allow God to do what He wants to do. Our focus is acting in ways that honour and extend the Kingdom. Will this change the way I live? He is for you.

5/4 Paul Younger Matt 28:1-10 Easter Sunday

 - much more than the Easter bunny and chocolate! It's a very important day, but there's much misunderstanding around it. We, the Church, are not getting the message across. Do we know what Good Friday is? Easter Sunday?
There are 3 denials in Holy week. Peter denied Jesus. At the time he could clearly have declared Him. Peter's faith was weak, yet Jesus restored him. He was given 3 chances for redemption. Passive denial is just as bad. People are denied the opportunity to know the gospel due to our silence.
Pontius Pilot faced a tough decision. He tried to pass the buck. He denied his own responsibility. God sees him as accountable. Peter was the one that repented.
Jesus denied death itself! Jesus death looks like the end of His mission. He was struck down, but only for a short time. He took away the sting of death. Make sure we know and can explain what Easter is about.

29/3 Allan Weir Matt 20:29 - 21:6 Drawing a Crowd

Large crowds followed Jesus and found him wherever He went. He opens the eyes of more than 2 blind men. He drew a crowd, wherever He was. People come to Jesus. His death was to draw us to Him. He was attractive & we are to be like Him. He is Compassionate. He was moved to heal the blind man. Be loving and merciful. Begin with the love of God in your own heart. Encounter Him.
Jesus is good news! He speaks truth. Many politicians do not speak the truth. He speaks to hearts. We need Jesus with us and in us to do good and attract others. What is stopping them coming to Jesus? When they look at the church, do they see Jesus? The Church is prominent for the issues it supports, mainly the things it is against: abortion, sexual perversion.
Rev 19:7 make yourself ready. When there is a strong presence of Jesus no one can stand. We need Jesus to take centre stage again. Is He really the most important thing in my life? Jesus must be all in all. 1 Cor 2:1-2 Mission is more effective when He is central. No matter how good someone is, if Jesus is not central, they are lacking. Jesus brings purity, prayer.
Revival is when Jesus is central. Sinners will be convicted and changed when Jesus is there. There will be much bearing of fruit. Jesus brings power and praise. Mt 21:23 authority. He must increase, we must decrease. Be a people of faith. Jesus expects fruit. If we don't bear fruit, the Kingdom will be given to others. We are to be producers not consumers. Salvation brings us into the Kingdom, but it does not stop there. The Kingdom comes by faith.

22/3 Harry Sprange Luke 18:31 - 34 Preparing for Easter.

Jesus ministry can be viewed in 2 halves a)random lots of miracles. B) very focused, face like flint. Lk 9 is the turning point. Once they know He is the Christ. Although we use the term 'Mystery of God', they are only hidden until He reveals them. God reveals Himself to us in stages, be patient (especially with others).
Jesus 1st prediction of His death follows this revelation to the disciples in v43. He gives them a 2nd warning, then begins a slow planned journey to arrive at the right time. v32 is the 3rd warning. This is the reasons Jesus came. God wants to totally remove our sin completely - see Heb 9;28.
Jesus was always in control. He is the one who fulfils prophecy. He speaks of 'The Law and Prophets' as a reference to the whole Word of God. There is no longer a need for sacrifices. He uses the title 'Son of Man' deliberately. His hearers understand the significance of these different titles.
He was turned over to Gentiles (v32). The Jews did not kill Jesus. Ps 22 is a prophecy of death by crucifixion long before this punishment was invented. NB v4 God never turns away. Why a specific mention to Jesus flogging? Mastigo = flogging, this is the word used in Ch7v21 translated as sickness.Suffering is not death.
Ps 103:3. Our healing comes from Jesus suffering. By His stripes you are healed. He breaks fear of death. Like the disciples, we don't have to understand what Jesus did. We do need to accept it.

15/3 Alan Milnes. Dan 9:20-23,10:1-14

How good are we at worshipping when times are hard; when we have to making people redundant or attend funerals. Sometimes we wonder, "What is God doing?". This book has lots of familiar stories, but what is spiritual warfare all about.
God always hears our prayers. 1 Kg 18 relates the test of Baal; there was no answer. God hears. Ps 34 assures us, He is attentive. His answer may not be what we are expecting. This answer took 3 wks.
Don't be afraid. Be aware of what the spiritual reality is. Jesus was tempted by Satan, but doesn't challenge his ownership of the earth. Instead He concentrated on worshipping God alone. Do we give up too soon? Can we persevere for the answer? Remember to look for the spiritual reality. God made everything good. We have lived sinful lives that have affected the world. Isa 38 Hezekaiah's prayer. God can change His mind.
What role do we play in the answers to our prayers? Fasting and prayer go hand in hand. Righteousness is an attitude of our hearts. Spend time reading and praying. Satan is defeated but still writhes around causing havoc. Put on all God's armour. Persist in prayer. We need peace & truth to help us see what God's Word means. Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God.

8/3 Alan & Ellen Seel. Quality over quantity.

Most of this world seeks 'empty' fame. We all have something to offer. Too often prayer is one way. Listen for the voice of God. There are lots of voices around to distract us. How does God speak? We read God's word, we get dreams, we see Him in nature. Ex 3 the burning bush. Moses stopped & listened. In Numbers Balaam's donkey spoke. How does God get my attention? Does He do it 3 times as in 1 Sam 3:1-10 calling in the night.
Are we listening? Listening is wanting to hear. Prov 4:20-22. Saul was stopped on way to Damascas. God also spoke to Ananias. There a re many examples of post NT experiences of hearing God. Church in Falkirk.
When you hear from God, act in faith. Church in Strathaven. Move & see His word come to pass. Position yourself to hear from God. Get in a quiet place and listen. Test what you hear. Make sure you are acting on the right word. If it requires faith it probably is. Prophetic words are helpful, especially if they are confirmation. Do I have a peace about what I think God is saying to me? Stay in the place where He is. Ask Him to speak to you. Take the time to listen. Ellen - God's waterfall is cleansing and refreshing.

1/3 Richard Hobson Gen 27, 28. Jacob's dream.

Isaac gave Jacob Easau's blessing. A prayer & a prophecy. This was more than just a general blessing. These blessings were shadows of the hope of heaven. Easau was willing to kill Jacob to get the blessing back. Jacob flees to safety for fear of Esau. He has the blessing but also has a curse.
vv10 - 28 he dreams. Haran was a very hard journey and very far from home. After 48 miles he had to stop. This was not just a subconscious dream, but a message from God. The ladder shows that heaven & earth are close and connected. Jesus tells Nathaniel that He is the connection between heaven and earth. Abraham received a very similar promise. His earthly situation was unchanged but he was different. He had knowledge that he didn't have previously.
God is only seen through revelation. God does this to encourage us. Jacob had intercepted the blessing and allowed doubt to enter. God affirms the blessing; it will continue until Jesus. All who received this promise were sinners. God's promise is irrevocable. The source of the promise is God who doesn't change.
v17. Have we really seen 'awesome'? Jacob saw awesome!

  1. Earthly circumstances do not determine reality; we may need encouragement for this.
  2. God's promise is not nullified by sin. It depends on Him not us.
  3. Revelation is joy and fear
  4. God in places and situations we do not recognise.
  5. Having the promise is greater than having the dream or revelation 'experience'.
The house of God on earth is the body of Christ. His presence is here.

22/2 Dougie & Fiona McGeachin.

Fifty years living as Christians, 40yrs in ministry. What has been achieved? (Saved by grace, but need to work out salvation.) We are called to preach the gospel. How can we do things differently? Is everything okay in the church? This is a huge challenge for us. Lk 10:2 is a call to prayer; pray to the Lord of the harvest. Why are the labourers so few? Do we need another reformation? Part of the answer follows...
Current church government is very different to the NT model. Moses was urged to follow the heavenly plans. What does NT say? (Mt10:11-14 Lk10:5,7 Acts10:22,30 16:15.) Pentecost happened in a house. Paul dragged believers from their houses. NT church was done in people's houses. Church in the house; Organic Church (also known as Simple Church).
Constantine used state funding to build fancy churches. He created institutional Church. The professional priesthood usurped the priesthood of all believers. Organised Christianity thwarted the true believers. Leadership in Church needs to be functional, not positional. Lk 22:25-7 don't do church the wrong way. Traditions nullify the way of God. The structure of public worship can diminish the true meaning of fellowship. We need to make sure we are building the correct picture with the right pieces. There is no division between leadership and laity. Check the NT blueprint for church 1 Cor 14:26ff. This is only practical in a group of less than 20. Build one another up. What can we change?
God speaks to everyone. Everyone should contribute. Organic not organised. Doing church 24/7, more contact with one another, with others, taking the church to people. Cell groups are part-way to doing NT Church. Be Church instead of going to Church. Discipleship takes place in church in the house. An elder is not a position but simply someone who has been on the journey a while longer. The starfish is organic. When an arm becomes detached it grows another (& the 1 grows 4 more!). The church is not meant to be a pyramid with hiearchical government. A true evangelist is one who trains others to evangelise. (ditto disciple)
An exhortation to KCF - You under-value yourselves, thank God for who you are and what you have done. Don't feel that you lack the resources you need. Think about what you can do differently.

15/2 Hugh Henderson

16hr bus trip to Ghana. Brakes failed on bus in bandit country. They found a place to stay. A local pastor had planned to show Jesus movie, but didn't have the disc. Hugh was taking a projector and the film to Kenya and had the other language available on the disc. It was shown on two nights. Hugh preached through a cloud of flies: 90 were saved.
A week of ministry in Kenya, then onto Burundi. Led a training course for 40 pastors who walked for 4 hrs to attend.
Project in Haiti: School, community centre and church. Border crossing ‘experience’ only between 7-4 they all stop for lunch and there is a $30 per day charge. There are No services (power, water, drainage); 300,000 'indentured' (sold) children. Voodoo is a big issue. Reconstructed church is too small. Site to be developed close by. Big Meal 2014 was the biggest ever. 12 countries, some with multiple locations.
Hugh has been studying Hebrews and Melchizedek. Galatians 2:19ff is the central theme of the gospel. vv19,20 we are put to death and raised by Christ. I can trust in Him. My status has been changed by Him. We can fail to acknowledge this change. This is not about feelings. Focus on the truth. If you are not crucified, you are not in Christ. We must surrender to Him. The Relationship is the reality, not the 'communion'.
Paul lived from the fact of his circumcision. This is something that happened that he could not change. See Rom 5-8 - the reality for Christians is we are changed. We do not need to fight battles for a dominion we are no longer part of! We are part of a new Kingdom. Hebrews speaks of the sacrifice Jesus made: once for all; for us. We will be raised with Him. We are a new creation. Live in the new reality. Learn the new ways. Adopt the changes. The Devil no longer has any call on our lives. Jesus sends us the same way He was sent by the Father.

25/1 Jim Neilson. Mk 12:28-34. Information overload.

There is a morasse of ideas based on nothing more than people's opinions. What is important? Cut to the chase. What is the priority? Jesus answers with The Shamah - the centre of Jewish prayers. God is the only true God. He is our only reality. Our primary goal is our relationship with Him. The heart, here, is the seat of our thinking and being. With God, there is a future of possibilities.
We can make choices [which have consequences]. The psyche, will & emotions. Submit all of these to God. Emotions are not wrong and don't affect God or His plans. Set your course, disposition, towards God. He made us, He knows the choices before us. We are complex, yet He understands us. What is the evidence that someone loves God? Loving people. This is the horizontal expression of the vertical relationship. Jesus meets us in the other person. God is grace. Disagreement is ok, disrespect isn't. See Jesus in them. Keep away from religiousity; show His grace. These 2 commands must go together.
Micah 6. The Kingdom will supercede everything. Pray for the Kingdom and the will of God. Make it reality by demonstrating love for others. Respect their freedom.

18/1 Paul Younger. Dan 3:1-30. Out of the frying pan...

(Greetings from Pam & Bob.) Shakespeare - What's in a name? Despite something/someone's name, who/what are they really? Israel was conquered by superpower Babylon. Daniel, Hananaiah, Michael, Aseriah were exiled. God is my judge [Daniel] became 'Bel protect the king' [Belteshazar]... They stood against the regime, but had made enemies. They were in the frying pan - what comes next?.
Where was Daniel? No one knows. The three others showed their convictions were as strong as Daniel's. Nebuchadnezer's folly. He was foolish and stupid, ignored Daniel's dream interpretation. This is vanity and ridiculous.
Some of the officials tried to get back at S,M,A. They get the king angry. He reveals that his power and authority are severely limited. God can save from the fire. Don't doubt this. Saving your own skin is not always the best way. The king's rage led to the death of the soldiers. The king then sees the fourth man in the furnace. God's miracle wasn't just a close escape, it was total vindication. We will also be put to the test. We must stand firm and stay true to God. When we are put to the test (Isaiah) God wil be with us.

11/1 Andrea & Robert Mill. Ps 119:1-48. Discipleship

Read all of this Psalm for a blessing. Go and make disciples. What are we to make? What comes after they pray the salvation prayer? What distinguishes a Christian disciple? Jesus is our model. Phil 2. We identify things that need to change, we become teachable, obedient, trusting in Him, loving to others.
Things happen when we consciously decide to do things that develop our discipleship Eph 5:16. Be careful what you eat and absorb. Be disciplined in what you read. Rom 12:1, Phil 4:8. Feed your mind, build yourself up. Prov 4:3 guard your heart. Look after your emotions. (Sometimes you just need to get on with it.)
Creativity feeds your spirit. Study the Bible, the bread of life. Prayer is dialogue with God. Sit with a pen and notebook when in prayer to record what God says. Prepare to be amazed. All these require time and effort. Perceptions of what a Christian are varied. There is also a cost and there are trials. There are selfish desires to overcome. Pressures of society lead us to doing unhelpful things. Gal 2:20 To align with God requires surrender. Much of Christianity is counter cultural. Being different from the world can cause emnity. Be true to who God wants you to be. The benefits are amazing; peace, joy, fruitfulness. There is so much to gain. Ps 119 delight is repeated 9 times and many other positive aspects. Speak it to yourself. Discipline turns to delight in relationship with God. He delights in us. The Psalms are full of this. So are Prov, Zeph.
Find out what you can do together with God. We can enjoy God, it is key to our discipleship. v92 His Word sustains us. We get strength from God. Focus on God and not the problems we are facing. Don't worry what is going on around you. He will guide us v35. God wants us to be close and intimate with Him. He is listening. Pouring out feelings to God is a way to emotional health.
Focus on God in worship before starting to pray. Fruitfulness comes from delighting in God. If we are not delighting in God, why would someone follow? This will flow from a surrendered heart. Most important disciple to make is yourself. Move from duty to delight.

4/1 Ryan Robertson. Eccles 7:1 Don't get ahead of God - a good name.

Do we have a yearning for God to reveal His purposes for our future? Will we have we achieved something by the time we die? Life can change very quickly. Make sure you know who you are in Christ. God planned a covenant relationship with each one of us. Adam & Eve were the priests in the temple of Eden. Gen 3:15 God already has a plan for victory even though the first covenant was broken. Noah and Abraham also had covenants.
God is always rescuing His people. We are called to be His children. We can all experience His blessing. Eph 6, stand firm, have hope, know blessing is coming. God chose us to be holy and blameless. The Covenant in Jesus cannot be broken.
Phil 2 tells that Jesus suffered much. Eph we have redemption in Him. His blood is significant for our life and throughout the life in God. To be nourished and grow in Christ, we must make time for fellowship and study. Jer 29:11 God's promise of hope and future.
As Christian's we complain and moan too much. Declare God's goodness and the hope we have. We are not defeated! It is not just about money. There are many blessings. Isa 40:31 urges us to rise up. Find the passages of scripture that speak into you situation. Experience the things that God puts in place for you. Whatever we put in will determine the outcome. Attitude and motives are important in service. Allow God to use you wherever you go. Know Him, not just about Him. Be hungry for God, for how He wants to use you. What are His promises for you?
