18/12 Paul Younger Jn 1:1-18. Word Became Flesh.
At this time of year people are open to God and His gospel. We all spend time looking for things; on average around 10 mins/day. This can amount to 153 days in a life-time. People are looking for all different things - Higgs Boson, keys, phone, car. The biggest search is looking for God. Too often it is in all the wrong places. In Waiting for Godo, Godo never comes. There are over 4000 religions. Karl Barth tells us that God is revealed in His Son. Religion may not help you find Him. Stop looking, just ask. Jesus purpose was to seek and find the lost.
Jesus is Word. The earth was formless till God spoke. Many famous people have spoken wise words, but none have this power. God is speaking to all who are listening. He is speaking through HS. Academic study is not required to hear God. Interviewees for a telegraphist job were asked to fill out forms. One man went into the office and was told "The job is yours". The others were angry, but they had not understood the morse code message. God doesn't speak in code. Use your ears.
Jesus is light, even a small torch is bright in darkness. The sun is not as bright as God. The sun will go out, God won't. Use your eyes. Light exposes lots of things.
Jesus (God) became flesh. Philosophers deduce that God is remote. In reality, He is near, we can touch Him. We have access through Jesus. He did all the work. Jesus came as a baby, but grew up. He came to die, for us to live.
11/12 Alan Milnes Isa 49:1-6, Lk 1:26-56. Glory to God.
Bought new Bible, spending time in God's Word...
Travis Trip played various venues and sometimes the audiences got very rowdy. If this happened he started playing Silent Night and calm was restored. Music is powerful.
Mary's response and song were powerful and revolutionary. Mary is significant. She was a poor teenager not accustomed to favour. She knew the OT well.
Zechariah heard the news about Jesus and disbelieved, Mary heard the news and believed. God comes down to bless Mary and all mankind. In the womb, an unborn John the Baptist sensed what was happening. Mary was willing, despite the human response and rejection to come. Zechariah the priest didn't believe. Mary glorifies God in song. A revolutionary hymn.
God heard Hannah's prayer, her response in 1 Sam 2:1-10 is similar to Mary's. These are songs of celebration for a child. The Isrealites had certain expectations about the Messaiah, but Mighty God had a different plan.
God is Holy. Isa 6:3 is one of only 2 instance of the 3 times emphasis in the Bible. Holy, Holy, Holy in Revelation is the only other similar emphasis.
We are called to oppose our sin. God is merciful Lk 1:50.
William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury - China was not ready to accept people or views from outside their own mindset (The Living Church). Exampes of mercy evident today are seen in a Muslim Restaurant providing free lunch on Christmas day for any lonely people; local churches doing the same; Chip Riley and those who facilitate the grain game; Christina and the work in Guinea Bissau.
4/12 Harry Sprange Lk 1 5-15,39-45. Title.
Praise God for believers baptisms and school opportunities in Armadale. The Gospel is being preached, pray for conversions and a trip to London with drama classes.
The birth of John the Baptist is foretold in Lk 1 5-15,39-45. Zechariah and Elizabeth were disgraced with barrenness and were ancient. This was a miracle birth. Today it would be considered too risky to be allowed to proceed. Mary's pregnancy was even more miraculous. Elizabeth was the only one who would understand, so Mary goes to visit her relative. HS fills them all. A 6 month foetus responds to an embryo. Elizabeth calls Mary the mother of my lord.
Isa 49. 1-5. Life begins at conception. We are important to God before we are born. Ps 139. v16 unformed substance is a term for a foetus. All are formed in His image. Graeme, a 4th child, experienced difficulties in child birth. His Mum was given a choice of her life or the baby's. She asked for both and she lived another 50 yrs. Jewish culture and law forbids abortion and infanticide. Every child has a right to life.
27/11 Richard Hobson. Jn 11:1-37 God's glory.
Everyone knows about Lazarus who is mentioned in Jn 11:1-37. In this account, and others, we see that Jesus was often misunderstood. He said unexpected things. Sometimes what Jesus did was bizarre. We have things to learn. Jesus is God incarnate. In Him was no sin and no regrets. God is love. He only acts in love.
Lazarus was a friend of Jesus and was ill. Jesus was quite far away. The sisters send their prayer as a message to Jesus. Jesus is their Lord. They appeal to his love. We see here that prayer need not be long or specific. It is sufficient to know Jesus and direct your prayers to Him.
In v4 He promises life and declares that God's glory will be revealed. To see God's glory is our greatest need. This is very different from human glory. It is important that we do not misunderstand. To us it seems reckless that Jesus stayed two days longer. That was the right thing for Him to do. Through v14 Jesus tries to explain He is following a higher purpose. His trust in God increased the faith of the disciples. Our hope, faith and trust must be also in God.
From v21, although Martha criticised she still trusts Jesus. All Jesus says and does is out of love. Jesus felt the loss v33. Do we blame God for not being around in a situation? Jesus' love for Lazarus was obvious. People questioned His lack of action. Jesus acts in ways beyond our thoughts.
If we are asking "Why is He not helping me?", our first response should be - look how He loves me. Focus on God, not yourself or the situation. We are created for His glory. v25 Jesus is the answer. One experience we can enjoy is the glory of God. Jesus paid the price. Get a taste and hunger for the glory of God.
20/11 Alan Seel. Gen 22:1-14 Faith.
In 2 Tim 3:1-4 we see that during the last days people will be self-centred. Many are like this now; we are in the last days. Be balanced, not having an extreme view or no view. How do we deal with the stuff that comes along to disrupt our lives? Gymnasts rely on balance to perform their exercises.
There are troubles in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan. We hear of wars and rumours of wars. All around us there is uncertainty: UK referendum, EU referendum, US presidency. In your heart, is there fear or insecurity? There is instability, but there is a hope and a way forward. God has entered our hearts. Our hope is in Him. Stay balanced, stand firm in your faith. With Jesus we can stand. By faith we trust and are sure of what we hope for - Heb 11:1.
Our faith will be tested. Mt 14:29 during the storm on lake, Jesus calls Peter to come out the boat onto the water. God will stretch us to build our faith. The Christian life is a victorious life. Peter's faith is tested again in Acts 3:7 when he tells the crippled man to rise up and walk. Hear from God and move in Faith.
In 2015 Falkirk Vineyard children's ministry started with 12, now it has trebled. Youth started with none! Now 15 youth. In Vineyard churches everyone gets to play, the church has trebled in size.
How do we stand in faith? Gen 22:1-14. Abraham was a man after God. God tested him. Can we trust God in the way out or extreme testing? How would we respond? Consider the 'test', 'trust' and 'triumph' of faith. Isaac was a special son. Faith will test your trust and obedience. By declaring that they will go to worship and then return shows Abraham s trust in God. In the natural we try think it out in our understanding.
v7 Isaac provokes Abraham, but Abraham remains firm. He continues to follow God's calling. Before it was too late, God intervened. Abraham reaped the reward from God. God provided the sacrifice. God will also ask us to step out to see Him come through. Stand in Him to see the victory. Live by faith. Heb 11:8 declares, "By faith Abraham". Go out and do it. The full armour of God is there to protect us. We have everything we need in Him.
13/11 Hugh Henderson Habakkuk 1:1-2:20 God's Plan
A brief outline of the passage (another technology fail...)
Habakkuk asks God for a solution to his problem. He cries out in the midst of a terrible situation. There is no justice in the land and the wicked are prevailing. God gives an unexpected and amazing answer. He is going to use the enemy to bring forth His plan. They are a lawless people, but God will bring them to shake things up.
Habakkuk asks again, as presumably, he didn't like the first answer. God states His intention to act at the appropriate time. His word will come to pass. Meanwhile, the riighteous are to live by faith. Faith given by God himself. God will deal with the unjust and restore justice.
6/11 Charlie Somerville Eph 1:1-14. Inheritance.
A family went to a lawyer to hear a will being read. All their anticipation was soon dispelled when it was announced that the deceased had spent it all. We have inherited all in Christ Jesus. He is our heavenly lawyer. We have received much: enabling, blessing. Many Christians are so unhappy, despite having it all.
Salvation began with God. He chose us, Jn 15:16, it's not something we did or merited. We receive His undeserved favour; we are chosen for a purpose. We have a responsibility to live our life for him. There are no spiritual sun-loungers. People are drawn to the Saviour through Divine grace. All three persons of the Godhead involved in our salvation. v5 we are fully accepted as adults into his family. Adoption by God gives us instant standing in the body of God. From day one we can understand the blessings.
We need to draw on his wealth. We can withdraw from the bank of heaven. He accepted us, stop trying to make yourself acceptable to Him. It is only by grace that we can enter and receive blessing from the Son. God the Father, Son and Spirit all work together, each has a special purpose in our lives.
If a slave in Roman times was bought, then set free by his owner, he could not be a slave again. Jesus went to the slave market, bought us and set us free from the slavery of sin. We are not poor, we are rich beyond understanding, v7, our sins are forgiven. They are carried away, Lev 16:21,22 the goats are symbolic of Jesus death and taking away our sins. Sin makes us poor, forgiveness makes us rich. We are blessed with every blessing. He lavishes blessing on us, vv8-10.
We are in God's inner circle. He places values on us, think of the price paid by the Son. We will experience the fulness. We are heirs with Christ. Past, present and future. Jesus inheritance is wrapped up in the Church, we are his precious bride. v13 HS sealed us, we are marked as special. HS points us to the saviour and brings glory to Jesus. HS in us is remarkable. God's seal of ownership is on us, it is a finished transaction, we are protected. God works through our trials and problems. The mark of HS is sealed on us. It shows we are authentic. A sign of the promise.
We have been, are being and will be saved. People need to see we are different and for real. The engagement ring. We belong to our Saviour. God working together for our good. All the riches of God's grace are for His glory. His riches are beyond compare. Our worship is to live for His glory.
We can only receive spiritual riches, they cannot be earned. God doesn't withhold any blessing unnecessarily. We must be ready to receive and to be used. Read the Bible and ask the author to reveal His Word. We are greatly blessed and highly valued.
30/10 Jim Neilson Mk 14:12-26 God has a plan.
BUS assembly included reports from some places where things are tough and some from places where they are rejoicing. Don't lose your hope. God has a plan. Don't be discouraged by the tide of current opinion.
Mk 14:12 - Jesus has arrived in Jerusalem. He gets interrogated by the authorities. He sends the disciples into city to make preparations, but He had already done most of the organising. Make arrangements for the celebrations.
v14 Jesus had things planned to facilitate what he needed to do with the disciples. God prepares for what He wants us to do. We get to help in same way a young child helps a parent. Service is not what we are good at. Things don't happen by themselves. God gives us opportunities to serve Him and others. Know that you have His support. Know what is expected from you. Everyone should use their gifts. There is something for everyone to do. We have a choice.
A meal is good for sharing and relating. Jesus challenges the disciples and also challenges all who follow Him. He doesn't expose us. We can still make good and bad choices. He allows us to confess or choose differently. Eph we are His workmanship. God is an inviter, not an arm twister.
The Hebrews saw God do amazing things but only 2 of them made it into promised land. This was all down to their choices. Their salvation was not in jeopardy, but other consequences resulted from how well they chose how to respond. He challenges us to make good choices as He invites us to be involved.
Jesus applies the Passover to a greater event. Bread broken for the journey. Wine a sign of relationship and protection. Heaven is coming to earth. God has it all prepared. God sows seeds in people, He pokes them. He does this to draw them forward.
23/10 Allan Weir Eph 5:22. The Glorious Church.
God is good. The Glorious Church Eph 5:22-27. Jesus presents to Himself a sanctified, cleansed Church. She is not a tatty bride. We are beautiful. We are the glorious Church! Allow HS to work that into our thinking. Jesus has washed us. We are glorious.
Jn 17:20-24. It is the glory of Jesus. Nothing of ourselves. We must understand, live and be that Church. Col 1:27 tells us we have a glorious hope, the riches of God are in us. We have His glory for unity.
1 Pet 4:17 the Spirit of glory rests on us. HS glorifies the Church. 2 Cor 3:7 glory of the ministry of HS. We are transformed into greater glory. Give room to HS in church. The glory is the unity of the Godhead. The Glorious Church is His blue-print. Jesus glory is on His Church and we can experience unity. The bride has her eyes on the bridegroom.
Eph 4:3 be diligent to preserve the unity we have. We will appear with Jesus in glory, Col 3:14. Rom 5:5 love poured out into our hearts by HS. There is one God, we are one with Him. Jn 17:23 this world needs to know that the Father sent the Son. We are the revelation of Jesus. The HS takes our words and He brings conviction and understanding.
God's unity is glorious. Focus on Jesus and people will see the glory. We reveal His love. God's love for me is the same love He has for Jesus. The Gospel we share is the love and life of God. 2 Cor 4:6 light shines in our hearts.
We think of the incarnation particularly at Christmas, but He is in us all the time. v24 the glorious Church is destined for glory. Cooperate with HS to be who we are meant to be.
2/10 Andrea Mill Heb 2:14 - 4:16. Rest.
The anatomy of rest. A program on Radio 4 found that most people don't feel rested enough. Of many ways to rest, reading is favourite. God rested from His work and implies that we should rest from ours. Music is helpful and important. Jesus took time alone, He went to places of solitude. We can enjoy nature and read His Word.
Heb 2:14... 4:16. Rest is physical and mental. Rest has a profound effect on our mood. Our thoughts are not always reality. Mindfulness is... stopping something to get back your strength. There are many aspects to rest. It is Biblical. Ps 23 is an instruction to lie down, where all we need is provided. God restores my soul. It is a command. We are free from legalism, but the principle still holds. Resting is a good practice. God led the Hebrews from Egypt to the promised land with promise of rest (Ex 33:14).
There was work/war first before the rest. Moses led them to Canaan. 10 spies saw giants, 2 of them saw abundance. Ps 95 :8-11 is the account of how they rebelled and didn't see the promise. Only the faithful saw the place of rest. There is a Sabbath rest along the way. Sin and disobedience robs us of this. Lack of trust and lack of prayer can lead to worry and lack of rest. God wants us to be His children. Jesus sat down at the right hand of the Father. Follow Him to receive the rest: the spiritual rest that devil will try to steal.
Jesus knows what it is like. He modelled the lifestyle: time alone on the mountain, time in fellowship. Guilt can steal rest from us through anxiety. Jesus invites us to 'come to me who are weary '. The young ox is yoked to the experience one. We are to live the life Jesus lived - Gal 2:20. Our flesh and temptations can steal our rest. We can get addicted to stress and be continually busy.
We should watch out for one another. Relax together. It is a family and a Church responsibility. Keep your heart from getting hard. Learn to go to Him quicker. Seek His wisdom. This is a Year of Jubilee. Move forward. Ask for God's help; we can't do it all on our own. Reach into heaven, surrender and take hold of spiritual rest. Trust God, take His hand. We don't need to struggle on our own. There's mercy and grace from God.
Rest: stillness, ceasing of motion. He will lead us. Yoked to Jesus listen to His voice. We are stronger with Him, go at His pace. We are called to do greater things than Jesus.
25/9 Ryan Robertson Ps 23:1-6. The Lord is my shepherd.
v1: The Lord is my shepherd. Jesus is the good Shepherd, the Lamb of God who died in our place. We will lack nothing.
v2: He brings us to the place of plenty. God gives the resources to be in plenty in His Word.
v3: We need time to stop and be revived. The power of HS is present in creation and all through time/history. The power of Holy Spirit is in Jesus, in raising Lazarus, in raising Jesus. The power of Holy Spirit is in us. We are equipped to go forth. He guides us through our paths. We are equipped and challenged. As we walk, we reflect on Jesus and build our lives on His Word.
v4: God gives us His protection. Eph 6:10-17, we have the full armour.
v5: God prepares a table, a royal banquet. It is a safe place under His blessing. The presence of our enemies doesn't take away any of this. God is always near and present. God prepares good things for us. Gather round the table for fellowship and family. There is blessing here. God fills us with good things. Things to share.
v6: God's goodness chases us. It's all He can give us. Don't keep God's message and goodness to yourself. How can we reflect God in our daily lives? Don't be quick to judge others, especially those we hardly know. We must share the goodness and kindness. God will give us power from above. We know Christ, we should share this. We don't know how God works. Reflect with grace and gratitude that God will prepare the table for us. Minister His love to yourself and others.
18/9 Paul Younger Judges 8:22-23. The man who wouldn't be king
The scene: the people of Israel are so grateful to Gideon for bringing them victory over the enemy that they want to make him their king. This says a lot about him, but his response says even more about him. He is ‘The man who wouldn't be king’.
The background: Judges 6:1-23 is not a happy scene, the people of God have done evil again. God brings punishment on them by the Midianites. It was a harsh oppressive rule. The Israelites had to hide everything, even their crops.
The Prophet reminds them God is merciful. The time has come for God to set them free. They need a hero. It’s time for Gideon. Who is he? He is chosen by God. What qualifications did he have? God knows his character and didn't make a mistake. He is found hiding. He is the son of Joash. He is ‘just’ a farmer.
The Angel calls him mighty warrior. God makes His choice. Gideon is humble: a nobody from a family of nobody's. He recognised God, but was cautious. He needs to check this is real. So he asks for confirmation. He makes a meal and watches as it is consumed by fire. Gideon is wise.
Ch 6:36-40. He wanted to know God was with him. He set tests that only God can pass. Be certain what God is calling you to do. There is nothing wrong with being sure about what God's plans are. Gideon is faithful and he is obedient.
Ch 7:1-17 Midian had around 150,000 troops. Israel’s 32,000 was too many for what God planned. History has many battles won by smaller armies. God ensures it is His victory. Gideon’s faith was absolute. Now his obedience was unquestioning. The big battle didn't materialise. God gives Gideon a plan. The Midianites panic and flee in terror.
When going into battle make sure you are on God's side. The people attribute the victory to Gideon. We need to leave the ruling (reigning) to God. Even if you are not a Gideon, you can still be one of the 300 and still be used by God to bring the victory.
11/9 Dougie McGeachin Mt 18:11-14 Jesus' strategy for mission.
Glorious things are spoken of You. Mt 6:10 Thy Kingdom Come Thy will be done. Jesus did that all through His life. His glory is in creation, His Bride, His children. 2 Pet 3:9 tells us He desires that none should perish. We long for His return, yet if it came too soon many may be lost. Jn 3:16 - God loves this world. Jesus came to earth to seek the lost Mt 18:11. God the Father doesn't want any to be lost vv12-14. Lk 15 is a trilogy of parables about a lost sheep, a lost coin and lost sons (both of them). Jesus' priority is the one who is lost.
We were all separated from Him, but He found us. Now a new heaven awaits us. Hell was not created for us, but for the devil and all his angels. 1 Tim 2:3,4 the Saviour wants all people to be saved. We tend to value our coming together for worship and fellowship more than spreasding the gospel. Jesus wants us to fish for men. We are saved to be sent. Learning is important, but we must go. The gospel will be preached to all nations before the end will come. If only the preachers lead people to Jesus it will take 10,000 yrs. When all believers lead people to Jesus, it will only take 32 yrs.
Our enemy holds us back from doing this. 1.2 million believers are not in church. There is a shift away from consumer Christianity. An army of believers are following Jesus ways. People want to break free. We should take small steps. We are trained to go and do. Thousands go to Church, but just to receive. Too many of us pray for God to move and we continue to do nothing. What is the problem? Why is Christian ministry is not how it should be?
According to scripture, only Apostles have a right to be paid. Widows are also to be supported so they can devote to prayer. We are called to be a priesthood that serves the whole church 1 Pet 2:5,9. Rev 1:9 John was in the situation on Patmos due to preaching God's Word and testifying to Jesus. Jesus work was to seek and save the lost Lk 19:10. Ours is the same. Look around so you can see the needs, look for who you can bless today.
Preach the Kingdom Mk 1:14,15, 16:15. Go look for people's & communities needs, then minister. Teach disciples to obey God. To obey Him is to go. Gathering together for fellowship is good: Jesus in the midst is church. Whether it's a couple, parent & child or a meeting with a stranger - it can be fellowship/worship. The labourers to do the work of spreading the gospel come out of the harvest. New believers are those who make new believers. We must get over the barriers to sharing the gospel. We need to look at how we are doing this. Learn to tell your story in 3 mins, aim to get them talking and responding. Train one another. Encourage one another. Be intentional. Learn to tell God's story. Look for people that are interested. Another reformation is taking place; a reformation of structure. We are to be His witnesses. God is on the move. Jesus second coming is closer now than when we began.
4/9 Harry Sprange Prov 6:16-19 Godly living.
A unique aspect in Judeo-Christian faith is to have a God with feelings. For Muslims, Allah is impassive. For the Buddhist, enlightenment is beyond feeling. The Roman’s and Greek’s gods were just randy.
Each verse in Prov is stand-alone, sometimes seemingly random. It is poetry, giving us a flavour of what is being said. It is nonetheless inspired truth. It asks the question 'Does God hate?' What things displease God.
Haughty eyes: an attitude of looking down on others. Ps 101:5 also proud heart; not just the eyes. James and Peter tell us that God opposes the proud, Jas 4:6. The start of the Christian life is experiencing a need for God. Ps 51.
Lying tongue: we must desire truth in our inner parts. Honesty is very important. Liars will be consigned to the fiery lake, Rev 21:8.
Bloodshed, there was a death penalty for those who took someone’s life (with safeguards for accidental fatalities). Rom 12:19 shows that this is not applicable in NT times. The Jews look forward to judgement day when God would established righteousness on the earth. He will deal with evil. Innocent blood leaves curse on the land.
Plotting evil. Premeditated sin is very serious. Mt 15:8, 12:34 warn us that our actions come out of what is in our hearts. 1 Chron 28:9, God searches every heart.
Feet up to mischief 1 Cor 15. feet take us places. Ps 119, God's Word is a lamp, a light, directing our footsteps.
False witnesses. The devil is the liar. A gripe that one person has against another is not justification of the other person's guilt. Num 35:30 advises that there must be more than just one witness.
Dissension (strife), Ps 133 encourages unity, we must not be a divider. Jn 17:23 calls for complete unity. Acts 2:44, they all lived together. Respect different views. Titus contains two warnings. It is our duty to warn one another.
God is not a big softie or sugar daddy. Insincere worship is hated by God, so is idolatry. Mal 2:16, He also hates divorce, the concept, including domestic violence. Our behaviour and attitudes must be pure before God. Ps 51, create in me a clean heart, oh God.
Daily verses: Wed Prov 6:6, Thu Prov 6:16-19, "Fire-brands" 1 Peter 2: 1-3 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like new-born babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
28/8 Richard Hobson Jn 6:35-69. God's Word
Not every thing Jesus said is written down, the world could not contain it all (Jn 21:25). What we do have is enough. We are not disadvantaged by the things that Jesus said that are not recorded. Every thing we need to know is there. Jesus said controversial things and people took offence when they misunderstood Him. Jesus and His Word are perfect and what we need to hear. His words were crafted to exactly what people needed to hear.
Perfect speech is not void of emotion. It is not just a cold rational argument. The listeners grumbled even at this perfect word. They disputed His Word. They will do the same with our words. The eating that He refers to in Jn 6 is not physical food, it is for eternity. If they had understood it, they would have known that it was special and precious to them. This is not an issue of intellect. The HS gives life. These are words of Spirit and life. However, taken literally this was an impossibility.
No earthly author comes close to Jesus. Accept His Word to receive eternal life. This is glorious truth, but these hearers take offence. Even some disciples turn away. v67 He turns to the 12 disciples and asks if they are going away too. Peter declares Jesus is the Holy one. We are Jesus disciples. We also struggle with some of Jesus words. We don't understand the battle for Canaan or many other concepts. His way is not our way. Sometimes we don't understand and take offence. Don't let confusion keep us from God's way. Deut lists some things that are revealed to help us.
Hold onto 3 truths. What God does is true and perfect. His actions are good. He is always good. Keep, from taking offence. Do we just follow a teacher because we like their sayings. Peter knew why he should follow Jesus. Not just a lifestyle choice. A bad reaction to our witness doesn't mean we did it wrong. Give a good account of your faith when asked. Ensure it is only Jesus words, not yours that cause offence. To whom shall we go? The world offers many, easy alternatives to make us feel better. The real answer to our questions is Jesus.
21/8 Jim Neilson Mk 14:1-11. Serving.
God never coerces anyone. Greg Boyd, an atheist who tried drink and drugs in 60's, wrote “The Myth of a Christian Nation”. If we follow some one who gave their life we follow the example and do not impose ourselves on others. The Passover was a time of purification. A time to put off immorality; cf 1 Cor 5, the leaven in the bread. The hypocrites (all of us) have differences between their beliefs and their behaviour. God wants us to be aware of our own hypocrisy. People see through this.
During this time Jesus was in an unclean place. The woman becomes involved in the real story. Earthly King's take things by force. The nard sacrifice points to the sacrifice Jesus is going to make. Who is unclean to us? We need lots of wisdom to serve without an agenda.
How do we evangelise? In serving we may/not get the opportunity to share good news. Find, out what the community needs. Serving is about meeting their needs. Judas was 1 of the 12. He was the treasurer. He was trusted by Jesus and the disciples; he was sent out to do miracles with them. Judas acted on his feelings, the same ones that all of them were experiencing.
All Jews were looking for vindication; their messiah was going to overthrow the Romans by force. Paul refers to himself as a servant in Phil 1:1. Jesus in very nature of God took nature of a servant. Beware of getting on a power trip with God. Jesus breathed his last saying it is finished.
To men this is foolishness. The gospel appears nuts to our world. You couldn't make it up, because it is true. What is our response? Do we follow the path of humility and service? Purification is following in the steps of Jesus in His upside-down Kingdom. Give away and serve.
14/8 Alan Seel. Num 13:1-33. Hope.
As we try to order our lives, things come in from the side and put us off. Life is about cycles. We look forward to the next season. We try to prepare for the big events as we anticipate their arrival. How long are we willing to wait? Are you hoping for early retirement? Have you waited a long time for something? Do we ask, 'what's happening God?'. Waiting is difficult for us.
Look at the attitude of Caleb. The Bible is a great book, two testaments. Look at the bit between Exodus and Deuteronomy. Num 13:1-33. Gen 17:8 promises the land of Canaan. Another spy story. 12 spies including Joshua and Caleb. Canaan is a narrow bit of land. There was lots of good fruit, but they were afraid.
v30 Caleb speaks up. God got angry at them. He makes a promise (excl Josh and Caleb). 40 yrs they wandered, Josh and Caleb too. Josh 14:1-15. Num 14:24 Caleb has a different spirit. He was 40 then, 85 now. He believes he will walk into his inheritance. He was still as strong. How can we be people of a different spirit? Our spirit can be arrogant or sensitive. Caleb had a conquering attitude, a can-do mentality, a positive outlook. Trust and strong faith in God. He whole heartedly served God. He was a man of vision and hung on to his vision. Caleb realised his vision. Faith reasons from God to the difficulties.
Dr Paul Brand was raised in India. His Mum was still in ministry at 75. Despite a broken hip, kept working till 95. A persevering spirit, an encouragement, loyal to leaders.
Caleb wasn't afraid to fight. He was a man of blessing. He blessed others. Give me this mountain! Do I cry/shout out for what God has said is mine! 2 Cor 1:20. God guarantees what is to come. Eph 1:3. glorious grace. Col 2:9 fulness in Christ. Do we embrace this? Break out of cycle of defeat with HS. In our lives are we seeing this?
God sees you as a strong ambassador, spreading His good news. How do we see ourselves? Be constantly prompted and guided by HS. Jesus must be number one. What are we doing to bring the Kingdom here? Talk to people, share stories. Take the opportunities to share what God has done for us. How much are we willing to share?
7/8 Paul Younger Josh 2:1-24 Faith.
Encouragement: When we see You, we find strength to face the day; even on days when we don't want to get up.
Message: Josh 2:1-24 is a spy story. There's not much original TV broadcast today. Spy stories are not new, even genealogy stories are not original. Matthew lists a genealogy that follows Joseph's side of the family and Luke's version follows Mary's lineage. Rahab, from Josh 2 is mentioned in Mt 1:5. Is there a more unlikely person for God to use? She was a foreigner, a worshipper of false gods and a harlot. The Heb word zana refers to a prostitute who sells their body (more than a 'hostess').
Jericho was a strong fortified city. Joshua did some investigating. Two spies were sent out on a fact-finding mission. Their strategy was good, visiting places where people gossiped and not many questions were asked. Even so the King got word of it. Rahab did something incredible. She was a traitor to her own people, but she was not a fool and chose well. She sent the King's men away and made a deal with the spies. She could easily have given they away and probably become a heroine.
What choices do we make each day? They may not be as big or surprising as Rahab's. How did she know about this people and their God? She'd heard tales of the Israelites in the desert. She heard that God is Lord of Heaven and earth. Every other choice she made came out of that one choice to seek God. She staked her life on this and lived out her choice. It is more than likely she would have been executed if Joshua had not won.
Rahab's faith is included in the Heb 11 list of faithful men and women (v31) and she is commended for chosing obedience. Faith can move mountains (Mt 17:20); it can also pull down walls. James also mentions Rahab. He is encouraging believers to see that faith is not a noun, but also a verb - a doing word. Her actions from her faith were just as important.
Nothing is impossible for God. Do we know who we are? We are not defined so much by what we have or haven't done, but by what we can become. God is more interested in who we can be than who we were.
31/7 David Seel Mt 28:16-20 Making Disciples.
Texas update: the trip was all positive, just need the official papers. Lots of opportunities to share why you are thankful to God. Met all the pastors. They are building the structures for home groups.
A word from Faith: Be on God's side Ps 147:5. Pray to God for to help. He won't force us but will draw us in. His power is infinite.
Message from David: Standard class passengers go in through first class cabin on dreamliner. How easy it would be if we had all the facilities. However, opportunities for out-working of our faith are more available than we imagine. Cultural influences will try to limit our effectiveness. We have the same commission as the disciples. God is the same God. Phenomenal things are happening in Africa. The same power is working here.
Mt 28:16-20. We need to go out and train. It's straight forward; a command. It is a command, but making disciples needs to be natural and consistent. Have conversations with people. Get a heart to win souls. Speak to people you don't know. A standard item agenda on Texas Church Tuesday meeting is reviewing the progress of the new believers. We are all about winning souls and make disciples. The Great Commission takes on life. Our lives are changed, so we can go out and bring changes to others.
We should introduce people to Jesus then let HS take over. Don't strive for opportunities, just take the ones God gives. Use the experience God has already taken you through. There is a difference when we try to make the opportunities, or take the one's God makes. When we take the ones He makes there will be opposition, Eph 6:12. We can deal with the physical things; let God deal with the spiritual. We should be considerate of other's views, 1 Cor 8:9.
Paul expected opposition. If it's too easy, check back with God. Devil is not interested in you when you are not following God. The only way to deal with that was to pray. Jn 16:33. We can overcome opposition. Opposition doesn't mean it's not God. Respond to Jesus commands by doing/acting. Say "Yes" to God. Josh 1:9, be bold. Don't lean away from opportunities, lean in. We will miss opportunities for no real reason. Confess failure to God, move on and look for next opportunity.
CT Studd - grab the impossible. People want to know how we respond. Fundamental issues are being challenged. Caleb knew he could conquer with God's help. Barnabas saw potential in Paul. Pre-determine to do it. The outcome is God's business. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were willing to face the fiery furnace. Mk 14:27-8, take courage and step out of the boat. Stephanie Santos 5/3/16 posted a status after she spoke to a teenager at a road accident. He accepted Jesus. God always wins. Rom 8:28. Do it, lives will be changed. We have the privilege to share in His work.
24/7 Harry Sprange 2 Cor 1:8-11 Prayer
Where do you look in scripture for help for a person struggling with health and life issues? God will rescue us. 2 Cor 1:10,11 he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Paul believes in power of other people's prayers. Pray for God to open doors for the gospel (Col 4:3), that the message would spread (2 Thes 3:1), that it would be made known & declared fearlesly (Eph 6:19,20), for boldness to preach and release healing power (Acts 4:29,30).
Jesus told disciples to pray for labourers (Lk 10:2). This was after He sent out the 12 disciples and after He sent out the 72. He was looking for people who could reach outside the churches.
1 Jn 5:16. We should pray for fellow believers who get into sin. (This passage is usually avoided due to our limitations of understanding of different levels of sin, yet all sin is sin.) Some sin gets between us and God. Some cut us off from God. When restoring someone caught in sin (Gal 6:1), this must include prayer. This work should be carried out without criticism or complaint. Jesus and Stephen died praying for the forgiveness and restoration of those who were taking their lives.
We should also follow the examples of those who prayed for nations and peoples. In Gen 18 Abraham prayed for Soddom. In Num 14:19 Moses prayed for forgiveness for the people of Israel. (He also prayed for Miriam's healing 12:13)
Job 1:5 prayed in case the family sinned. Samuel keeps praying for Israel. Dan (Ch9), Ezra (9) and Nehemiah (9) identify with all the people in prayer, fasting and confessing sin. They are godly men, but they stand with the people. We rightly reject the Roman Catholic view of priesthood. As the priesthood of all believers (Rev 1:6, a kingdom of priests) we are not priests to one another, but to the world. They do not have the access to God that we have through Jesus.
We pray for salvation. God wants all to be saved. Isa 26:18, the prophet cries out that we have not brought salvation to the world. Our western mindset struggles to see beyond the individual. Eastern people view their lives much more through their community. Prophecy and judgement comes on nations as well as individuals. Mt 25 the sheep and goats refer to nations as much as to individuals. The present world is in turmoil and chaos seems to be increasing. We must address this in prayer. Has God withdrawn protection over us and our nation? We should go away and pray for mercy.

3/7 Ryan Robertson Psalm 3. God's prevailing love.
The love of God prevails. David is fleeing for his life and asks for God's help. People ask us how we can trust in God. God is here to help us. His power is in HS. We often feel attacked, but God is a shield around us. Confess scripture in all situations, good or bad. Jn 1:14 Jesus is the Word of God; confess Jesus.
Prosperity and healing are scriptural, but are not the Gospel. Many have asked why God hasn't healed. The Bible tells us God loves, He is love. His love prevails even when we don't understand. We have hope in God. Acknowledge Him and His glory and He will lift us up.
He gives us rest. Rest makes us stronger. He sustains us and brings us through. Eph 6:17 - use the sword to deal with attacks. Nothing is too big for God. David overcame Goliath. Love your neighbour (even if they have cats). Go to God with all your problems. Do not fear as this displeases God. God is personal and is involved in our lives. He will respond to our call. He is gracious, just and Holy. Ultimate victory is in eternity, but we can overcome now. He is our shield - when we call. Speak God's Word and proclaim His goodness.
God's opinion of you is what really matters. Accept the value He places on your life.
26/6 Harry Sprange Rom 8:31-39. God's abundance.
God did not spare His Son. God is bigger than our brains can handle. He is extravagant. We struggle to see past our aches pains and difficulties. Isa 55:1-3 tells of free food and drink, God's goodness is freely available. Jn 3:34 God gives the Spirit without measure. Overflowing. He gives immeasurable power Eph 1:19 and 2 Cor 4:7. More and more grace leads to overflowing thanksgiving 2 Cor 4:15.
Three men who were so full of the Spirit they declined even more: Charles Finney, James Turner, D.L. Moodie. We have many promises of God's power, of His abundance and overflowing. Are we living in this? We have everything to live an abundant life. The bonus is the power and authority. Are we enjoying it? Have we lost it or not even entered into.
Mt 22:1-14 after so many decilned the invitation the servants were sent out to gather anybody. Later they threw out those who didn't wear the garment (which they were given) or meet the conditions of entry. These garments made everyone equal and saved embarrassment from not having proper dress clothes, but they also required humility. Be humble enough to receive what God supplies. The attitude "once saved always saved" is a false hope. Heb 3:14 - maintain the trust you had at the start. Col 1:22,23 remain firm in Faith. Jn 15 abide in Jesus and His Word.
The Devil is looking to devour you 1 Pet 5:8, steal from you, and he schemes against you 2 Cor 11:14. The danger is real, but we can resist, Jas 4:7 and 1 Pet 5:9. God can and does richly provide for us. You may experience tough times ahead, but God can provide for your needs.
Brian Mills prophetic word. God led him to scriptures of getting out. European Christian leaders wanted Brexit. It will help us to be a missionary nation. God's will is coming. Pro EU prayer leader. Looking for harvest. Celebration of Azuza St 150 children attended. Pray for spiritual breakthrough.
19/6 Ryan Robertson Gen 12:1-13. God's Promise.
God made a promise and Abram and Sarai. He was to be the father of many and this would lead to Jesus. The promise God made to Abram is also a promise to us. They leave Haraan as instructed to get the reward. In v10 they move down to Egypt to avoid the famine. By v12 through to v20 they hijack God's plan and contrive together to speed up the plan. They allow fear and sin to come. The lesson here is to learn to keep trusting God's promise.
Even through the time Abram and Sarai were less than obedient, God's grace allowed them to remain blessed. God is good to us even when we disobey and even when we don't realise it.
Gen 15:1. God prepares us in His way and His timing. Abram mucked up another time. Ch 16 Sarai also tries to speed up God's plan with her maid. We think our way is better than God's but we are wrong. Ch 17 God's covenant with Abram. 24 years later God reminds Abraham of the promise. The covenant seals the promise. God also blessed Ishmael. God works good in everything. vv15,16. Abraham now obeys God v23. Our way can delay God's promise. God's promise is renewed and more urgent 18:10. It pleases God when we obey.
21:1 His Word does not return void. 21:3 Isaac is born and welcomed into the covenant. Only later do we understand God's ways in bringing the fulness of His plan. 21:8 jealously can still creep in. Abraham has a tough decision, but seeks God. He should have followed God's way all along. Even if we fail, God is faithful. v13 we are all His children and He will provide for us. Can we give all that God has given us back to Him? He will replace all our mistakes with a lamb. His love is strong and powerful.
12/6 Andrea Mill Lk 8:1-18. The Sower and the Seed.
People were eager to hear Jesus' teaching. They would come from afar to listen to Him. They couldn't wait until He came to their home towns. Many women came to hear Jesus first, they received Him and supported Him, many of them had received healing.
Why does Jesus speak in parables? It was His way of relating earthly life to heavenly life. Everyone is familiar with planting seeds, watering and tending them and watching them grow. We like to join in with the creativity in nature. The disciples asked for the meaning, but not everyone stayed to hear it. Jesus is passing on a message about God's Word. Jesus understood the culture and oral tradition and uses it to pass on wisdom. This lesson is all about the human heart.
How can God's Word benefit our hearts? Heb 4:12 His Word is alive. Isa 40:8 His Word is eternal. There is so much historical evidence for Bible history. Jn 1 starts by telling us about the beginning: the Word that brought forth life and the light that sustains it. That light is what shines through us when we don't hide it, Lk 8:16. What is the condition of our 'soil' (heart); are we hearing but not listening? Hardening your heart stops you receiving the blessing. Prejudices and pride also hinder us from the blessing.
Salvation is wonderful, but discipling must follow. The problems that 'disappeared' will return. We need to deal with the issues. After receiving salvation we will still experience all the emotions and face many challenges. We can get words of encouragement and revelation from God, but too often we then go back to 'normal'. Enticement can sometimes be too strong for us and we fall away. Busy-ness can prevent us from maintaining our walk. Worry, riches and pleasure can keep us from God's way.
Heb 5:12,13 we are supposed to teach others and train them in God's ways. We are instructed to not worry. Leave your worries with God. Heb 13:5 stay away from the love/pursuit of money. Don't be continually seeking pleasure. God is not against riches or pleasure; we are supposed to enjoy what He gives. However, if we chase after it, it becomes an idol. Traditions may also need to be laid down. Other distractions will also come along. What place do we give to technology?
Recognise and be aware of the spiritual dimension (good & evil) at work. Follow God with sincerity, from the heart: Eph 6:6. Lk 8:15 - people with a noble and good heart can persevere and they are fruitful. The primary reason and purpose for seed is to produce and be fruitful. Seeds require good soil for them to be fruitful. Prepare your heart (soil): be careful what you say and what you hear, carefully select what you read and watch.
Have confidence and courage, be real, tell your story. Be different. Pull out the weeds, send down your roots, water the seed. Jn 15:1-8 nurture intimacy, pray in the Spirit. Go out and let your light shine. God is bigger than any challenge. We can make a difference. Nurture your heart, be available.
5/6 Dougie McGeachin 1 Pet 3 :8-12 Who can I bless today?
The dinner table is a good opportunity to be family and to share. How awful it would be to be alone and unloved; for nobody to come to your funeral. How do we see ourselves as a fellowship? Are we just doing religious things as a group? Doing Church is really about being family together: God's family. It is a challenge to do Church as God wants it and not just resort to traditions or formats.
1 Pet 3:8,9 Do you wake up and consider "Who can I bless today?". Do we understand what blessing is and how we can bless others? Abram was a pagan that God called, but God blessed him in every way, not just some ways. God also blesses believers with much spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3). Blessing is for us and for others; do it with intent.
People blame God for bad things, even though He cannot do or send evil. They never blame the evil doers, but seem to think it is God's fault for not preventing their misfortune. Blessing is mentined 495 times in the Bible, 117 in NT. Curses are only listed 165 times in whole Bible. 1 Pet 3:9 by blessing others, you will get blessed. How do we bless others? There are 6 ways listed in vv 8,9. Have compassion, care about other people. Love as brothers. Agape - undefeatable benevolence. Be courteous - this is being a blessing. Not taking revenge. Not reviling/running someone down or slandering.
Discipleship transformation groups can help us with these challenges as we are accountable to others and checking each others progress. This is not a new idea as John Wesley ran Covenant Discipleship Groups. The context here is the family of God and these are to encourage and build up, not to catch each other out. Offence can inoculate people against the gospel. Bring real joy, peace, encouragement or support into people's lives. We can learn to bless, be good listeners.
1 Pet 3:10-12 are a quote from Ps 34. Watch what you say. The mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart. Watch where you go. Do everything you can to be/seek peace. Accept yourself. Know you are loved by God and do not fail to tell others about Jesus' good news. This is the ultimate blessing. Eph 1:13 this is what God wants for you, to be included in Christ. Faith comes by hearing. Rom 10:14 urges us all to preach it, herald the Good News. Lk 10:2, Jesus commmissions and sends out 70 disciples. Like them, we are to declare the Kingdom. The problem is not enough labourers.
Christianity is not a profession. The trained and ordained can make others feel inadequate. We all have work to do. We must all take ownership of the great commission. Jn 15:16 assures us that He chose and ordained us to go and be fruitful. There is an army of ordinary people. However, too many are untrained and still waiting to go. Eph 4 explains the gifts God gives to the Church, for the ministry of the Gospel. We should especially relate to those our own age, but also share with those of any age.
31/10/17 will be the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. A new reformation is in progress. The structural division between clergy and laity is being transformed. The Church is the people. Jesus called fishermen, God is calling ordinary people. He is looking for disciples. Leadership should be functional rather than positional. We all have so much of the goodness of God already in us. Share it. We need training more than teaching. Are we getting fatter spiritually while the world is still lost? Are we continuing what Jesus started? Be able to tell your story.
29/5 Richard Hobson Prov 4:1-9 Wisdom.
Get wisdom and insight. This is not just advice for meditative types. Wisdom is often distilled to short phrases (and made into posters). Scripture urges us to get wisdom. Wisdom is not intelligence or knowledge. It's about knowing the truth in such a way to know how to speak in any situation. First, get to know the truth. This only comes from God. In 1 Kings 8, all Israel stood before the King and they sought God.
Ps 111:10 tells us that fear of Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Learn to walk in the path of wisdom. Being wise can avert war. Wisdom helps us to succeed. Knowing God's will is good, but we must learn how to live it out. Jer 10, God created the world through wisdom. In His wisdom He made us and He has put wisdom in each of us. Every one has a measure of wisdom. We have the capacity to increase the amount of wisdom we have.
How can we grow in wisdom? Three ways to do this are... Pr 1:7 - fear God, not frightened by Him, but deeply respectful of Him. Keep trusting Him to provide all we need. Pr 4:7 get wisdom and insight. Lk 2 Jesus sought out teachers. Growing in wisdom is not automatic. Get it from those who have it. Read about wisdom, talk to the wise, tease it out of them.
The larger catechism teaches the requirements of those hearing the Word of God; it is to meditate on it. Use the words of God, receive and act on what you hear. God gives us wisdom. CS Lewis understood God's Word was more important than life and death. God teaches us through our experiences. Ask for wisdom as directed in Jas 1:5. Salvation is a gift from God, yet we work it out as we apply His Word to our lives. It is the same with wisdom; it's a gift that we can develop.
Rational argument is not always effective at pusuading others of the truth, but a godly life is! James urges us to get God's wisdom. Be persuasive and live well, for our benefits and theirs. Eph 3 made known to everyone. We have responsibility to spread wisdom. Having silver will not make you wise. We need wisdom to know how to use what we have. Look to bless others.
22/5 Alan Milnes Mt 26:14-35. God's Call.
God has a call on your life. Like a seed, we must die for new life to come through. This can take time. However, sometimes time seems to go by very quickly. We live in 'instant' times. Instant everything started with Smash potato pieces in the nineteen seventies. In Old Testament times Abraham waited 25 yrs for Isaac. Israel took 40 yrs to leave Egypt. There was 400 years between the end of the OT period and the start of the NT. The Leslie Baptist vision from 30 years ago, to redevelop the building, is now being realised. How long was the room ready for the last supper?
God knows the future (this is not what the open theists are declaring). How does God know what we will choose? We cannot make God small or limited like us. Isa 48:3-6, God declares beforehand what He will do. Revelation is about future events. God does know. He knows us and how we behave and still chooses to be the God of forgiveness; Jesus invited Judas to drink. God knows our sin, yet still invites us. He forgives all our sins. He invites us to eat and drink. In a sense we are all unworthy, but we participate solemnly and consciously.
15/5 Hugh Henderson Romans 6:1-3,15-16. Don't you know?
Romans 6:3 is a frequently asked question 'Don't you know ?' v16. Also found in 1 Cor 3:16, 5:6, 6:2,3,9,15 9:13,24. What are the gaps in our knowledge? So many people go to Church, but don't make an effort to know what Bible teaches. God is currently prompting academics to provide teaching materials for Mission International to train African pastors. He provides teaching for all of us in the Bible.
Heb 6:1 we should get to know the elementary teaching and then move on to the additional teaching for maturity. Jesus trained and studied to fulfil His calling Heb 5:7-10. Jesus is the first one to be a King, a Priest and Prophet. He is the real thing. v11-14 we are responsible for training ourselves (v14) in learning and moving on to solid spiritual food.
The current UK govt idea of progress and development is liberal nonsense. We need the elementary preaching/teaching on repentance 6:1. Then we should understand about Baptism and all the other topics listed in v2. Christians should always be learning more about Jesus, and be hungry for more. Will we be babies for ever? Foundations should be laid once; they are a starting point for something else.
Repent and go God's way, change from dead works to living works and faith in God. Faith is only an instrument to bring us to the place He wants us to be. It's all about God. Rely on Him. We have to take steps to do what God requires. Be ready for the Post Christian world. They need Good News.
8/5 David Seel 1 Sam 17.Faith is trust.
Heb 11:1 and 2 Cor 4:18 tell us that faith is trusting in what is unseen. Jas 2:26 tells us that faith requires us to act. Rahab acted in favour of the people of God. Steve Bowen, "faith is trust". Faith is confidence and trust. Heb 10:23, be unswerving, God is faithful. Faith is a constant and firm belief. Learn from those whose confidence in God was unshakeable.
Eph 6:11-17 God equips us and gives us weapons to fight with. Our answer is in Jesus. We already have the answer, so we need to find our voice and speak out. Why do we not speak out, is it from fear or rejection? Ps 34:4 we don't need to fear, God will deliver us from all our fears.
Fear and faith have a common root; which way will we direct our actions? What are our expectations? 1 Sam 17 - the account of David and Goliath. Israel has rejected God as King and ask for a man to be king. Saul was chosen, but he repeatedly disobeyed God. David was anointed, but did not become king till years later. God continued to train him.
When David arrives at the Valley of Elah, the battle is going against them. David steps up. vv32-51. David was 100% confident in God. The confidence of David was met with disbelief, but he was relying on past experience and God's favour. We should also know and acknowledge God's protection and be willing to go. Have confidence in God. Peter walked on the water in Mt 14:29. Choose to respond to God, not people.
Armour is defensive, however, David was on the offensive. Are we in the Church just known for what we are against? We should be sharing God's love and good news, not defining rules. Piercing the Darkness. We must be positive, not negative. v42 Goliath mocked David. We should not let that bother us, their lives are a mess and they will eventually come to us and change.
David knew the battle belonged to God. Society today tells us to fight for ourselves. Don't let others dictate whose we are. In Eph 6:12 we read that our real enemies are not flesh and blood, but principalities. David was willing to be the soldier. 2 Tim 2:3,4 urges us to be good soldiers and honour God. He will promote you. God can lead us through battles. He led David against Goliath and used the situation to show David where he needed correction, then advanced His plans for David.
The lessons for us are to go to God quickly when you make mistakes; the giant that wants to defeat you will lead to your promotion; start with confidence. Work out what is the giant that you are facing. God breaks chains. Move into the things God has for you!
1/5 Paul Younger Jonah 1:1-17. Small town boy made good-ish.
We live in a culture that worships celebrity. Jonah is a celebrity, in the sense that everyone knows about the "whale". Why should he be famous? He is a just a 'Small town boy made goodish'. We know very little about his background. Jonah came from Gath Heffer 2 Kgs 14:25. It was an insignificant village. Amitai was his dad. His life became synonymous with
Refusal - He decided not to do God's work that he was chosen for. His destiny was to take God's Word to the chief city of Syria. The Syrian's were known for their brutality in war. Hence Jonah's reluctance to go to his enemies. Jonah becomes a runaway and heads off to a place 4 times further away in the opposite direction. He tells the people on the ship what he's doing.
Running from God is futile. Ps 139 - where can I flee from your presence?. God doesn't resort to plan B and use someone else. God gives Jonah time to consider his ways.
Repent is what Jonah needs to do. Ch 2:9, he agrees to do God's word. Worship is not just singing God's praise, it is also obedience to God in actions. Ch 3:3. Nineveh listens and repents.
Recalcitrant, Jonah takes the huff. He rants at God that the city was not destroyed. He feels he was made to look foolish. He now begins to realise how gracious and forgiving God is. Through the vine he learns how caring God really is. We often blame our tools or lack of resources for poor results. God's workmanship with poor materials is astounding. The touch of the Master's hand: you don't have to look good to sound amazing or produce something beautiful. What will God do if I say yes?
24/4 Alan Seel Rom 12:11-13. Discipleship.
We don't do sickness well. Physical tasks become an effort. Sometimes the antibiotics don't cure the cough, then you get the 'flu. Post viral fatigue can follow. Conference had to be cancelled, church postponed. managed to keep Alpha going.
Maintain your cutting edge, your effectiveness can be dulled by physical weakness. How effective have I been? It can be a struggle to keep the disciplines. A faith life needs structure and balance.
1. Jesus at the centre. 2. Daily prayer: the high speed connection to God. 3. Bible: Word of God 4. Fellowship with other believers. 5. Share faith with others and talking to people is important. 6. Using your gifts.
Where am I? Is there something of every element in my every day? Do I apply the disciplines daily. Rom 12:11-13 encourages us to be zealous in our service. Jn 4:28 shows that we should have a story to tell. Jesus stirred people up. Be current. Communicate with the community; out of this comes stories. Sow seeds and watch God move. Engage people, say things and see what response you get.
Gal1:6, 5:7 be on guard, keep the disciplines. Losing focus can blunt your cutting edge. Wherever you go, ask God first who you are meant to encourage. Don't be overtaken by negativity. In neutral there is no drive. Eph 3:16-21 v20 "now to him" - that is our focus. He is the way the truth and the life. Live for the moment. Make every conversation count. The gospel is the Good News that can help in situations. We are the messengers. This can change the course of people's lives. Does our heart beat passionately for the people of Scotland. God is going to move. 1 Pet 3:15 give an answer.
Ellen shared a word of encouragement: God remembers.
George read from Isa 43:1-7 (do not be afraid), 8-12 (you are my witnesses).
17/4 Harry Sprange Gen 4:8-12. Prepare the ground.
God is about to move, get ready for the harvest. There are lots of signs and prophecies around at the moment. There are calls to get out of Europe. A recognition of the need for repentance in the nation. 'Releasing Heaven on Earth' by Alistair Petrie. He is from Prestwick, an Episcopalian, now in Canada.
Gen 4:8-12. Cain's brother's blood was crying out from the ground. Is this a metaphor for something obvious or was the ground affected by sin? Gen Ch 3 relates how sin enters the world and work, which we are all called to, becomes toil. This is the curse, in ch 4:12 - the yield is diminished.
Modern Evangelicalism includes those who believe that God does punish sin in this life and also those who consider God is all loving and totally forgiving all of the time. Hosea 4 (v1 ff) tells of a time of no faithfulness; because of sin the land is mourning (v3).
Man's sin affects the whole earth. When we turn back, 2 Chron 7:14, God will heal the land. Lev 25:23 the land is God's, we are aliens. Ps 104:27-30, it is God who provides food for all the creatures, everything that is created comes from Him. Evangelicalism includes those who are only working towards salvation and redemption of the whole earth and those who consider the ecology and sustaining the planet. WWF director is a Christian who believes God called him to the post to demonstrate that ecology is not just a New Age concern.
The rapture of all Christians from the earth (1 Thes 4:17) can be implied from Peter. 2 Pet 3:13 talks of a new heaven and new earth. This means renewed, not created. Evangelism is our priority. The yield from crops in ancient world was very important. Seed is valuable. Would it be thrown carelessly on the path, in the weeds or on stones? This is unlikely. Clear the land first: prepare for the coming of Jesus! Find out what is in the way. Is the land defiled or under a curse?
We need to deal with the issues.
10/4 David Seel Josh 2 :1-24. Faith.
This is the only week in 7 that David was available to stand in. House is as good as sold. The job interview was successful. Still waiting for visa. God is providing. Planning to visit Texas with the family in July.
Your faith should reflect your experience. Something is going to happen. Heb 11:1 gives a definition of faith. It is much more than a minor wish. 2 Cor 4:18 encourages us to focus, not on seen things, but the unseen, eternal things. Faith is a constant firm belief. We are not just following a set of religious rules. Jas2:17. Faith must be worked out. Practical atheism: what is that? Merely pointless philosophy without conviction. God talk without God walk is nonsense.
Outrageous faith brings outrageous favour. Faith is all about risk and trust. The secular world is a challenge to faith. Are we known as simply the 'God' guy. As a professional (teacher) there are constraints: legal obligations, deadlines (bells), cages/boundaries (class). It is tough and there are many tensions. The secular answers to many of life's situations are inadequate, but we are not allowed to bring the real answer. Stonewall posters are permitted; their mission is to empower transform and change. These minority groups get away with this, however, Christians are not permitted to do this. This is despite having real answers. Do we struggle to find the right way to present the real answer?
Is Christianity dying? That report is spouting rubbish. If we are covert, no one will bother, but that option is not viable for the person of faith. The Bible calls us to be light and commands us to shine. Jn 17 Jesus prays for his followers who are in the world, but do not belong to it. John Piper - teaching that we are sent into the world. Are sacred and secular separate? A.W. Tozer, "We are sent to bless the world, but we are never told to compromise with it.".
Faith is risk. Things in the political world are changing significantly. 1 Cor 4:2 be faithful, even though (v10) the things of faith appear as foolish. Be called a fool but don't be a fool.
Josh 2:1-24. Rahab had a dubious past. God uses her in His purposes and plans and blesses her for wisdom and choices. She is in the Biblical 'Hall of Faith' in Ps 87, Mt 1, Jas 2, Heb 11. God gave Joshua wisdom and led the men chosen to Rahab's house. God works on all sides. Rahab knows why the men were there; she knew she had to risk her faith. She didn't conform to her world Rom 12:2.
Haiti operation : a risk worth taking. Years of preparation, cargo of medical supplies and equipment and food including lots of Hydraulic fluid and school desks that nobody knew what to do with. Arriving at Nicaragua, without money for the dock tax, the captain and crew risk it and go in. Amazingly the fees were waived, the armed forces unloaded the cargo. The hydraulic fluid was required to operate the cranes. The crew meet the president and witness; visit a school where only a few who bring their own desks are not working on the floor. They took the risk which God offered and saw everyone blessed.
Josh 6v22, they brought out the whole of Rahab's family. Faith in God brings salvation. Through faith, your past doesn't determine your future. Where can we find opportunities to be outrageous? How do we change the destiny of a situation or workplace atmosphere? What would happen to me?
3/4 Ryan Robertson 1 Thes 5:1-28, Jn 16:20-33. Times and seasons.
Word for today - coping with grief; the story of Lazarus. Jesus wept; weeping is part of being human.
Times and seasons. We need to think and ask God how we can use the times and seasons. No one knows when Jesus will return. God has a bigger plan than us. He knows what He is doing. We should be worried for other people's souls. We can pray for them and seek God for what we can say or do to bring them to salvation.
Jesus brings a spirit of unity and community. We can ask God where He wants us to be. He will lead us to the right places and put the right things in place. All the Church is His Church. We should be in the place where God wants us to be.
Sometimes we will go through seasons of pain and grief. John ch 16:21, the pain of childbirth; v22 facing the death of someone close. God is there v32 even when we are scattered. We can still have peace, v33. Pledge allegiance to Christ. After Jesus died, it wasn't long before the Romans started killing Christians. Who really loves Jesus? Do we fear God or men?
1 Thes 5:15 what will I repay those who wrong me? Will we walk through trials and spread the Gospel message. God is a God of love. Do I really know His love for me? V19 Welcome Holy Spirit, don't resist His empowering. Spirit of the Living God fall fresh on me. Pentecost is not far away. Hold onto what is good. Keep yourself blameless before Him. Be known by your fruit. We are called to proclaim and also study God's message. We need love and zeal. Be true to the truth.
27/3 Harry Sprange Col 1:13-23, 2:13-15. The Main Issue.
What lies behind the crucifixion and other significant events of Holy Week? Col 2:13-15 relates that Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities. His death was not just for me; if I had been the only one who had sinned. He died for all beings and all things on earth and in heaven. The whole world has gone astray, it all needs redeemed. 2 Pet 3:12,13 speaks of the earth being burned up, but it will not all be destroyed and replaced with a completely different one. The existing one will be renewed.
The main issue is not that we need forgiveness, but that sin needs to be dealt with. Rom 8:6,7 our sinful nature needs transformed. Heb 9:28 Jesus appeared at the end to take away sin. Forgiveness from sin is available, but His sacrifice was to deal with the issues and root of sin. This was a necessity.
Easter is in the context of the Passover. The deliverance of the Israelites was all God's work, they didn't fight physical battles with the Egyptians. Dan ch 7 is the account of his dream of four monsters. It symbolises demonic kingdoms that were very powerful. God set up His kingdom to overthrow the Romans, a powerful kingdom. Jesus fulfils all prophecy. All that God promised came to pass, although not always as the Jews expected it to happen. Zech 9:9 tells of the king coming - on a donkey. Not exactly how they imagined it.
In Ps 2:6, David says the King is installed, many years before Jesus came to the earth. The NT writers say Jesus was installed as king on the cross. The Romans killed Jesus because he was a king, not because he claimed to be God. The Pharisees tried to trick Jesus with the Roman coins, but he catches them out. They were not supposed to keep object bearing human images. To get back at Jesus they lied to the governors about Jesus not paying his taxes and other false claims. In John 13:27 the accuser enters Judas; the power of sin is still at work. John 12:31 Jesus declares, "now is time for judgement". The Jews longed for freedom; they fought and strived for it. Jesus was killed as King of the Jews. He overcame the political systems of the world.
For more background to the gospel narrative see: Tom Wright, How God became King.
20/3 David Seel Mt 21:1-11. Expectations.
Palm Sunday is hard to understand since knowing about Easter. Expectations met or not. What do we think is going happen? God frequently takes David back to things he wanted to do earlier. We expect good service or good food. We expect things from others, they expect things from us or of us. We have an expectation of God and what He will do; how He will do it. How did religious leaders react when Jesus entered Jerusalem? The deliverer comes on a donkey. Mt 21:1-11, Zech 9:9. The Jewish people feel their expectations could be met. Later they rejected Jesus as He didn't do it the way they thought. What does God expect from us?
Mt 5:45 the sun shines on the just and unjust. There are too many 'them and us' situations. How can we love people in division and conflict? People know they are supposed to do this. Yet, we decide who are our enemies are. We still need to love them. Greet them. Where can we do practical things - that lead to opportunities for sharing the gospel? Pray for people who are opposing or oppressing you. We need to be changed on the inside to be able to do this. Mt 5:38,39 turn other cheek. When someone does us wrong, don't just walk away. don't just give what is demanded. Do more. The reason for Jesus teaching is Him calling us to what is possible. This is following Jesus. This is how we move on.
Mt 19:24, the eye of the needle, choose between God and money. God can be trusted with your finances. He knows where He will send you and what you need to do to get there. We need a right understanding of money, we should focus on Him. Serve Him with everything. Test Him in this. Mt 6:25, do not worry. Know whose battle it is. Know what you can do and what must be left to God. Pray and speak to God. He is probably asking you to do nothing. Lk 9:51,62. Follow Jesus, not yourself. Jesus is the way the truth and the life Jn 14:6. Rom 12:2 Christians are counter cultural. People reject Jesus today for the same reasons as the people of Israel did then. Embrace Jesus for all His teaching. We know the end, that's the good news! He cares what we think of people, money, Jesus.
13/3 Paul Younger Ps 129. Psalm of two halves.
Are we ready/open to learning from unexpected places? Sports have their own languages. We can learn some of the words and pretend to be an expert. This can lead to sounding knowledgable but talking nonsense. Do we believe big wins always come easily? It's a game of two halves: this Ps has two distinct sections. Israel will recover from the very tough situations.
Depression can distort our perception and memories. We forget good times. We can drag others down. We can 'enjoy' sharing the misery. Nobody had it harder than us. It is amazing that the psalmist moves out of this.
There's always hope, light. Look past how you feel to the facts. 2 Cor 4:8 - we are not crushed. Ps 124 :1-3, the Lord is on our side. Remind yourself that we have been cut free, v4. God is still with you. Then comes the break and the turnaround. We become more positive, looking up and looking forward. This is both a prayer and a prophecy.
God's enemies are challenging Him. To take on His people is to take on Him. Grass on roofs is useless. In Ruth we learn that Boaz gave a blessing to the harvest workers. This Psalm speaks of the blessing not being given to the enemies. God doesn't bless the enemies of His people.
Even when things look bad, it will turn round. There will be seasons of oppression, but victory will come. Put your trust in God. Be comforted and reassured, there is a glorious come back.
6/3 Dougie & Fiona McGeachin. Acts 13:36. Priesthood of all believers.
"May Your Kingdom Come", this is our prayer. The Greeks took Christianity and made it a philosophy. The Romans made it an institution. The USA turned it into a business. How do we relate to Christianity? How do I feel about myself? Acts 13:36, what is my purpose? We can't discover who we are by looking into ourselves. Our purpose is greater than our career or family or anything on our agenda. We are starting in the wrong place if we are looking at ourselves.
Job 10:12. It's all about God's purposes. Until we understand this it doesn't make sense. He is the reason we are here. Self-help and goal management courses all miss the mark. It's not about personal goals. Acts 17:28. Turn to God's Word, not worldly wisdom.
God has a plan & purpose for everyone born. He conceived us first. We arrived at the right time in the right place to the right parents. We are very special. Acts 17:26. He continues to shape us through our experiences. Ps 139:13ff praise the wonder of His working. Our view of ourselves determines our choices, but not His purpose. Age doesn't preclude us. We should be seeking Him.
Ps 92 tells us we are planted in His house. We are full of vitality. God fulfils His purposes. Jn 15:16 God chose us: to be fruitful. We are all ordained to be used by God. Mt 28:19 also urges us to go. God expects us to reproduce. Turn around the concept of who we are. Expect God to use us to bring His life to others.
Mk 4, the parable of sower v13, this is central to understanding God's purpose. The Word of God is powerful. Join His 'going' people and share what He has done. Hell was not made for people. When we open our mouth we are dangerous, the power is in the word. Believe in yourself. Talk about Jesus to people. Learn to follow Jesus. Google for "Following and Fishing". Be natural.
Learn the parables in your own words. They are not 'one-off' stories. They were told again and again. Tell your story! Practice so you get better at it. God gave us the ability to be His witnesses. Reform the structure of Church. Take the Church to the people.
28/2 Jim Neilson. Mk 13:28. Signs of the Times.
The myth of human progress is dispelled by the news on a daily basis. Mk 13:28 natural signs surround us. 2 Tim tells us in the last days people will be lovers of self and pleasure. Jesus declares what is lasting.
Know Bible and stick to it despite adverse circumstances. Jesus teaches new ways. How do we get the balance, not condoning yet not condemning? We need to learn to persuade people to come to the gospel. Get a full understand the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Find methods to explain it in ways that are appealing.
Time in v32 is not kronos, but kairos, moments or opportunities. The opportunity here is to repent and believe, this is what we can share. Time keeps advancing but we should look out for opportunities every where. Communicate to others how God is in their situation. The instruction to keep watch is not a passive waiting, but an active participation. Hold onto your beliefs.
21/2 Alan Milnes. 2 Kings 7:1-20. Prophecy of Elisha.
There was a great seige in Samaria and it was getting desperate. The prophet spoke out a message from God. Would we doubt the prophet's word? The high ranking officer was sceptical and dismissed it. The lepers and the King also doubted to some extent. The lepers take the risk and venture out. The King tries to reason out the situation. Another officer proposes to sacrifice some men to check things out.
The disciple Thomas is often referred to as a doubter, but he trusts Jesus. This passage is an analogy of the Gospel (and a parody of our lives). The good news comes first to the lepers (the low and the poor). They feed themselves first and deal with immediate needs. Then they store up for themselves for the future. Finally, they choose to share the good news with the leaders and the people in the city.
We can become a holy huddle if we just feed ourselves. People come to Jesus through relationship. They notice the difference in our lives. Elisha proclaimed confidently. The lepers took a risk. The commander doubted and didn't share in the feast and treasure. The King acted fearfully.
7/2 David Seel. Lk 5:1-11. Obedience.
This is how Jesus called His first disciples and shows how unexpected events happen in daily business. We get to see His perspective. To have a good story to tell you have to go out and do things. 7 years ago a trip to Pakistan was being arranged, but was overtaken by a New Orleans outreach. Do we recognise every time God shows up? Sometimes we just miss it, other times we pass it off or just ignore it. When was the last time this happened to me?
In Lk 5:1-11 the disciples were just doing their daily work. Jesus declared His intention in Lk 4:43. He breaks into their daily routine. He was in the vicinity while they were washing their nets. This was hard, mundane, demoralising work, but this time they could hear Jesus speaking. He wants to be involved in our lives. We need to get to know Him. Jer 9:29, 31 speaks of heart knowledge. 1 Tim 3:16 we can know the truth in human form, as a person. We don't need to live in a monastery to meet Him, He is everywhere.
Do we really want Jesus to be the centre? Is He the wind in our sails, the fire...? This will bring opportunities for us minister the gospel. We are meant to have something to say. If they ask, we can speak/pray/minister with them. God prepares the way.
Jesus commands the disciples to do something illogical, they protest at first, then they obey; like Moses in Ex 3:10-12. Jeremiah also took his time to obey. We might sense God saying something : we can protest or obey. God looks for our response. It should become who you are. Get God's perspective. Listen to Him. What does He see ahead in our lives? Do what you are asked.
Ask yourself, "In what areas of life or church should I try again?". Where can we trust Him more? Will you overcome the reaction from the spirit world or natural world. We can trust Him fully, even when we don't see it and He is all we have. When we obey His command we see miraculous results. 1 Jn 5:3 realise all that Jesus endured to set us free. We are called to live by the cross and not by our own reasoning. Learn to obey without knowing the outcome. Jonah heard and bolted in the other direction. Not a good tactic. Know what you need to know about God's command. Follow Mary's obedience.
What should I do again in obedience. Routine can become remarkable. The disciples did not become clergy or remain as fishermen. He taught them to follow and serve. No matter how bad it gets, the answer is always go to God. David sought after God's heart.
31/1 Andrea & Robert Mill. Lk 3:21-4:12 Temptation.
[background] In Heb 11 we read that by faith we believe that something seen was created from what was not seen: the spirit dimension existed before the physical realm. Satan was a spirit being who became proud and fell. Adam, the first created physical being also fell. Satan tried to steal man's inheritance/position. 1 Jn 3:8 reminds us that sinners do the work of the devil, but Jesus came to destroy that work.
Lk 3:21 - while all the people were being baptised after repenting, Jesus also came for baptism, but what did He need to repent from? Jesus was now apprenticed, age 30, without sin, coming for baptism. He prayed to maintain the relationship with His Father. How could He accomplish all He was going to do without this? Holy Spirit descended as a sign to John that he had fulfilled his task. God says to Jesus what He says to all of us. Jesus becomes empowered.
Heli, v23, may well have been Mary's father. It was prophesied that the seed of a woman was to crush Satan. Jesus ministry on earth was about 3½ yrs. In Elijah 3½ years passed while God dealt with the people. . Lk 4 - if you are the Son of God? 1 Cor 10:13 we all experience temptation, we have a sinful nature. We can learn to overcome. Eph 2:1 - we were dead in our sin. Jas 1:13,14 - God doesn't tempt, our desire leads to sin being conceived. Letting the thought dwell can lead to wrong action.
Rom 12:2 - other people, the world can entice us. Do the will of God to live. God doesn't tempt us. Money, lust and power affect us most. Pride also leads us to wrong. What was Jesus strategy? Satan uses our weakness. Jesus rebukes Satan. Idolatry is when we value something or person more than God. Satan knows scripture, Jesus knew it better. We are distracted to not trust God. We have the Word and the Spirit to help us overcome.
Most of the time we want to satisfy ourselves, to be in control, yet we are called to surrender to God's way. We should go to God to resolve our problems. We often do nothing when we should act. We seek our comfort and pleasure before looking after others or being obedient. Be disciplined to maintain your walk and stay close. Prepare to overcome. Accept that temptation is a daily reality. Know what you are prone to give into. Share with trusted people. Pray for each other. Grow fruit of HS. Let this satisfy so you are too full for bad fruit. Be disciplined.

Message...
10/1 Richard Hobson Jn 14:1-6. Home.
The Hobsons are moving house. A home is a blessing and is much more than just a building. The refugees have lost their homes and almost everything they had. We are people who look for a place to call our home.
In Jn 14:1-6, Jesus senses the disciples mood. He tells them "Let not your heart be troubled". He would say the same to us today, although, it is appropriate that we should be 'troubled' by some situations and respond in love and compassion. Jesus was troubled when He faced the cross and also when Judas betrayed Him. Why were the disciples anxious? In Jn 13:31-33, Jesus says He is going away. He was their everything, their friend and companion. Their future was being turned upside down. He knew and understood why they were troubled.
God speaks through Isa Ch 7: vv7,8 He gives them promises, v9 He calls them to be firm in their faith or they will not stand against the invaders. Believe what He said. Normal Christian life is a daily transformation of a renewed mind. Jesus tells them what the future will really be like. Listen to Jesus words. They are God's words to us. What does He reveal? There is a glorious future.
The Fathers House that Jesus speaks of in Jn 2:10 is the Temple. The house He speaks of in Jn 14:2 is in the heavenly realms. There is an extended family there. It is a family home. He gives very few details, but describes it adequately. It is the perfect family home.
His going now becomes a joyful thing. Avoid Thomas's mistake; don't question so much you lose your joy. Jesus answers Thomas without turning him away. We don't lack knowledge, but often lack trust. With your eyes on Him you will find the way through Him. Our true home is in heaven.
The truth of Jesus purpose overcame the disciples trouble. Our true home is already ours. Keep earthly circumstance in perspective. Our quick fix solutions are not the ultimate answer. Rejoice in His promise. We need a heavenly home to go to. Be patient, trust in Jesus, keep your eyes fixed on Him. Expect Him to take you home. This truth will bring us joy.
3/1 Harry Sprange Acts 1:4-8 What are we wearing?
Jesus told disciples to wait until clothed with Holy Spirit. Acts 1:4,5 Clothing is important. It's not just for warmth, nor just to cover us up, it's what people see.
Ex 28:1-5 the priests had special robes. For dignity and honour, glory and beauty. They were extravagant, expensive and colourful. Jesus and disciples didn't wear ornate clothes; they weren't entitled to. Although art depicts Jesus in distinctive attire, this would not have been the case. Judas had to identify Jesus to the temple guards. Clergymen did not wear robes of office until 400 years after Church began.
The disciples, however, did carry a supernatural anointing, Acts 3:6-8. The disciples were 'unschooled' Acts 4. They would have completed basic education, but not gone on to further education.
In OT times the presence of God had to be carried. The priests uses poles to transport the symbol of God's presence in the Ark of the Covenant. In New Testament days, we carry the presence of God in us. This has an effect on our environment. Demons react when God is present. Smith Wigglesworth was very ordinary but carried an incredible anointing. Is victory in a Christian dependant on their confidence? Isa 30:15, what is our trust in? Be confident in having access to God, Heb 4:16, through Jesus, Heb 10:19. Full assurance of faith Heb 10:22. The work of priesthood is going into God's presence on behalf of others. 1 Jn 4:4 - have confidence to overcome your enemy. Lk 10:4-9 Jesus authority is given to 72. Know your authority.
We should consider what are we wearing, how God sees us and how others see us. Do they see what is in us? Be dressed and prepared before facing the world each day.
