24/12 Harry Sprange Gal 4:4, 1 Jn 4:9-16 God to the rescue!

History is incredibly important to Christianity. It correlates the events of the Bible. God has a time for everything. Mt 2 records that the birth of Jesus occurred in the time of King Herod. All the events of Jesus life are set in historic context. At this time the Jews were aware that God hadn't "spoken" to them for 2,500 yrs.
Islam is not dependent on history. Other religions are based on myth. Christianity is unique. Jesus was a man who lived on earth and did miracles. Also in human history, during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Dan 2:27-35 records the king's dream regarding two kingdoms rising. The fourth kingdom referred to the Romans: strong as iron, crushing everyone else. These things actually happened.
1 Jn 4:9-16. God sending Jesus. When the right time came Mary gave birth. This was not the start of Jesus life. It was carefully planned from the beginning of time. Sending your son is a costly thing, but there was no other solution and mankind was in a bad way (Rom 8:8). It was His plan to save us, Jn 3:17. 1 Jn 4:9,10,14 - the verses that explain the purpose and mission of Jesus i.e. God to the rescue! Also in Mk 10:45 Jesus came as a ransom.
Stand up for Christianity when it is attacked by the world. Jesus was not an just example, not just a miracle worker. He is a Saviour. Man lost contact with God through disobedience. Jesus came to restore the lost contact. He is 'God in Christ' reconciling the world, 2 Cor 5:19. Eph 2:16 we are reconciled to God through Jesus. He is all about bringing us to God. He is opening the door to life for us now; not just in eternity. According to Heb 10:19, through Jesus, we can boldly enter God's presence.
Jesus is so clear that He was sent. It is stated 30 times in NT. Jesus, who was sent, is coming back for us - Jn 14:3. Jesus completed His task, returned to His Father, and is coming back.
Jesus, the sent one, sent out His disciples, He sent out the seventy and He sends us out (Jn 17:18). Jn 20:21 He sends out His disciples; He sends us. The message is not to be 'nice'. It's to bring good news. The gospel is how God feels about mankind.

17/12 Dawn Martindale Mt 1:18-2:6 Seek Him.

Rosyth Baptist are looking at the nativity through John’s gospel and studying the names and titles given to Jesus. Look at the names and titles in this passage in Mt 1,2 – 'Jesus', 'Christ', 'Immanuel', 'Shepherd'. (The genealogy preceding this passage is also important). Jesus is the Messiah, He is God. Jesus means salvation. Ps 130:8 God Himself is willing to save His people from their sins.
Jesus is God. He fulfilled the prophecy that there would be a child called Immanuel (God with us). Holy Spirit is not mentioned specifically, but is also present here. Christ is a title: anointed one. Those anointed were priests, prophets and kings. Most of Israel were expecting a political leader, a new earthly kingdom. Herod had no right to be king of the Jews. He was selfish, violent and wicked. Jesus was a just king, self-giving. He was born in Bethlehem (house of bread). In Jn 6:35 Jesus declares He is the bread of life.
The account of the Magi is only given in Mt. They saw all the signs and went looking for the baby. Herod’s advisors and the religious leaders also saw all the signs, but they didn’t even bother to search for the new king. The Magi were intellectual and the star really excited them. They came on horse on a journey that took months of planning and traveling. No one else sees it. This remarkable star rose in the East. It was possibly a messenger angel. The wise men investigated it and went looking.
There were clues given by Dan 9:24 regarding the time to expect the sign (70 x 7) when God would set the people free. Num 24:17 mentions the star and sceptre (symbol for a king) in Balaam’s prophecy. The star at first wasn’t clear, then led them directly to Jesus. Herod gets angry and becomes more selfish. He tries to preserve his position by killing the opposition.
Micah 5:2 prophesies a ruler from a distant past, linking Jesus with David and Abraham, and also with creation. The shepherd is born from eternity. Peter refers to Jesus as the chief shepherd (1 Pet 5:4). He supplies all that we need even in tough times (Ps 23). The King is here. The Pharisees and religious leaders didn’t go looking, but the wise men went seeking for Him. Mt 6:22-23, speaks of eyes and light: this is a warning to beware of selfishness and earthly satisfaction. Look to the light of God. Wise men brought gifts; we can give ourselves to Him. Walk with Him.

10/12 Richard Hobson Rom 9:30-33 Shame.

When reading the Bible we come across many references to 'shame'. It can mean the opposite of honour. The Psalms talk about avoiding shame. We learn to try hard to act in ways that don't bring shame to ourselves or others, however, we are not perfect. Is what others think of us most important? Surely its what God thinks that should be most important. Reading - Rom 9:30-33. (Romans ch 8 & 10 are easy to read, but very hard to apply.)
How do we act in response to Immanuel, God with us? Israel were God's people; all the others were Gentiles. Paul writes how all have received the Gospel, but the people follow different paths. What is this righteousness? Gentiles & Jews give different responses. They have two understandings. The Gentiles didn't have the heritage of the Jews, They weren't looking for God, but they still received the message and the righteousness of Christ. Declared righteousness by God they believed in Jesus. Whoever believes in Jesus will not be put to shame.
Israel chased righteousness through the law, but did not attain their goal. They always fell short. Sin is not removed by sacrifice. We cannot earn or obtain righteousness through our own efforts. Keeping the law, or striving by our efforts will not achieve righteousness.
v32 how is Jesus a stumbling stone? Why is God appearing to make people stumble? It is clear that God sent Jesus to reconcile. If we consider who was the most evil person, when they turn to God and are forgiven they receive righteousness. However, the victims of the evil person would be outraged. It is they who would stumble. People take offence when God forgives as most would seek retribution. Jesus forgives all sin. We must also remember that all sin must be forgiven, no matter how small! People also take offence at this.
We imagine that if God did things our way, less severely, there would be less offence. His gospel is far too glorious! The gospel is a light against the backdrop of sin and shame. Have we done something so bad we can't tell others. We still need to tell Jesus. As believers, we are already forgiven! Yet, we still need to hear it from Him. It is a joyful thing to be forgiven. Those who are forgiven much, will love God much. Jesus is our corner stone, not our stumbling block. Don't pursue righteousness through works, but by faith. There is joy in forgiveness.

3/12 Alan Seel Jn 2:1-11 Trusting God.

A wedding, a time of celebration, great occasions, but things can go wrong. People come late, patience can be tried, weather can spoil a picnic. Jn 2:1-11. Jesus begins His public ministry. God had already declared He was pleased with Jesus before He did any miracles. Jesus had started calling His disciples in the first two days after His baptism. On the third day He was at a wedding.
Jewish weddings can last for days. The situation of the wine running would have been a very big embarrassment to the host. Problems can arise on many occasions. Who can help us when we are in a situation? Our lives in God should be happy and content; sometimes things go wrong. Mary turns to her son. She knew He was Son of God. We need to learn to turn to Jesus in difficult circumstances. We should listen and learn to do what He tells us.
The six jars described would hold a total of about 800 bottles of wine! Filling the jars water would take time and effort; there was no running water in these houses. The wedding continued. Jesus took what was available (what is available to us?). We need to let Him fill us up. The wine was sweet tasting. Jesus meets our needs. He brings healing. We should learn to trust Him more.
Christ In Action were needing new premises for their equipment and operations as emergency first responders. Through prayer and seeking God, He has met their need in amazing ways. God still meets needs today. What do I want God to supply today?
Occasion, problem, solution. The disciples watched Jesus respond to the situation. What effect did this have on them? The disciples put their faith in Him. Faith is strengthened when we see God at work. Pray with faith and boldness that God will come and supply needs. Pray and keep praying. Listen to what HS is saying.
Alan & Ellen currently worshiping at Larbert Pentecostal 'Found Church' (AOG). Ellen sensed God saying "don't take no for an answer", press in for your answer to prayer. Alan felt God is offering comfort and love with outstretched arms. Sylvia shared that God was saying His family is wide, we belong to each other.

26/11 Iain Sutherland Acts 10:1-23,34-48 Presence drawn Church.

King's Fellowship (KF) looked at purpose-driven Church, but were led more towards God's presence and dwelling on Kinship with Jesus. The original King's Road runs from the castle at Rosyth where royals would land from their ships before coming ashore and traveling up to Dunfermline palace and abbey. There is a sense that God wants to restore the heart of the King to the heart of the kingdom in Dunfermline. KF are moving towards a presence-drawn Church, ministering from a place of fellowship and relationship with God. Adam and Eve were thrown out of the garden, the place of fellowship. The rest of the Bible is about getting back to His presence. KF are developing a Local House of Prayer (see LHoPs). It's good to look at scripture through the lens of presence and prayer.
There is a lot of significance for non-Jews of what led to the vision that Peter had in Acts 10. The Roman commander and his whole house were a blessing to their community and spent time in worship and prayer. They were effectively a Local House of Prayer. Cornelius possibly had previous angels visits as God used him to bless the people. He must have been praying for God's Kingdom to come. Meanwhile Peter has a vision. Something in the heavenly realm is shifting. The louder or more emphatic God's voice (note the repetition of the vision), the bigger the challenge for us or the shift in understanding that is coming.
Peter goes to the foreigner's house and speaks God's message. After delivering a great summary of the gospel. A miracle happens, the preacher is interrupted, by the presence of Holy Spirit. This local House of Prayer is how we and the whole gentile world now have the gospel. Cornelius prayer is significant, God answered it by making the salvation of Jesus available to all gentiles and all nations.
Jesus taught His disciples to pray "Thy Kingdom come". Jesus' kingdom has no national or physical boundaries. Scottish monarchs were known as King or Queen of Scots. They had rule over their people no matter where they were living. We can also pray for the Kingdom to come.
What could happen in your house when you pray blessing for those in your street etc. ? What would God do if you consistently pray for prosperity for families and businesses. There are lots of things we could pray for. Heather is offering dream interpretation at New Age fair in Edinburgh. These are opportunities to lead people to the Giver of dreams (G-o-d).
We should pray for a specific location or situation for His Kingdom to come. Share the gospel. Find your calling in the presence of God. Lev 9:22-24 proclaim blessing from the place of His presence. The roots and essence of LHoP are already part of Scottish Church history. Members were all expected to have their own Bible (with their name in it), and use it daily. Pray blessing. Adopt the attitude, "If there, why not here?". Follow the example of Cornelius. Gather with 2 or 3 others to do this. We have the authority to speak blessing in His name.

19/11 David Seel Acts 3:1-10 Obedience and expectation.

Preparation for these messages takes a different format every time as God uses different methods to indicate what is to be said. Today we will consider the power and authority we have in the name of Jesus. If we don't ___ who will? If we don't share the Gospel who will; if we don't speak healing, who will? Acts 3:1-10 - we can get excited about this. Jesus is alive! What other religion or belief system is still active and working today? Lenin's tomb is inscribed with all that he was. Jesus is. We can talk about what He is doing now.
Many knew the beggar at the gate. He had an expectation that disciples would give him some money. Peter didn't have money, but he had something else. What do we have to share? We need to do what we can with what we have now. Review what it is you have. Share Jesus.
What do we see on a daily basis? Are there healings and miracles? 'See, think, wonder'. Look at what is around you. Our very society is crippled and needs healing. We see the same things every day. We also have the answer, we can help. Salvation is our basic need. Terrible things are happening all around us. Divine authority, when do we use it. The name of Jesus. Mt 28:18 Jesus has all authority, if we are in Him, He gives it to us. Not something we should use lightly. Our relationship with Him is key. Obedience and expectation. Look for God-opportunities in daily live. Be available for God to use you. Be regular in worship to be ready for the things God will bring. Walk the path, go to the temple, be where the opportunities will happen. Be obedient. Then we can expect God to move. Then we can testify to what God is doing. Sunday is the opportunity to be ready for Monday through Saturday. How will the real Church be different from the nominal Churches?
Peace has settled in the new Seel home. On 4/11 there was a meeting of people interested in starting a Fellowship of Nations church in Falkirk. Barry Miller and his wife were visiting Edinburgh and another man had connections with Zambia and was investigating a well project. God is connecting people and putting things in place.

12/11 Harry Sprange Jn 8:31-37 & Rom 8:31-39 Complete Forgiveness.

How do we understand forgiveness? A prophecy given by David Tidy in Jan 2015 reminded us that God was able to convict the whole nation and the Church must be ready for when this happens. We need a holy Church.
Jn 8:31-37. Jesus came to set people free. Are we enjoying this freedom and living it out? We know about it, but don't always practice it. Mt 1:31 Jesus came to take away the sin of the world. The book of Hebrews explains the OT in light of Jesus. Ch 9 compares the old and new covenants; v15 Jesus was the ransom to set people free from sins committed under the first covenant. v28 His return will bring salvation for all those waiting.
The emphasis is the removal of sin. There is not so much in NT about forgiveness. Heb 10:10 Jesus sacrifice made us holy. The OT sacrifice brought forgiveness; Jesus' sacrifice removes sin so no sacrifice is needed. The first covenant was a temporary measure. 1 Jn 1:9 - Jesus forgives us and cleanses us completely. 1 Jn 5:18 - the children of God do not keep sinning. Even in the OT there were pointers to God removing people's sin e.g. the scapegoat. Ps 103:12 sin is so far removed. Isa 38:17b all sins put behind God's back. Isa 43:25 sins wiped out and remembered no more. Mic 7:19 sin thrown in the bottom of sea. 1 Pet 2:24 Jesus took our sins that we might die to sin.
Most Christians today are content to know that they are forgiven, but are living at a standard below what is possible. 1 Thes 5:23 God's work in our lives will keep us blameless. We are expected to stay holy. vv6,8 warn us to be unashamed at His coming, living in a state of readiness. Conduct yourself with control and love. Phil 2:14,15 live without complaining, be pure and blameless (also Col 1:22, Eph 1:4 & Phil 1:10).
God wants to do this in us. It's His work, not our effort. Not a "self-improvement plan", rather a "Christ-replacement plan".
  Oswald Chambers. Holy man. Removal.
Derek Prince in "Does your tongue need healing?" Ch 7 step 2 shows from 1 Jn 1:7-9 that God who forgives also cleanses. Once we are cleansed, the problem is gone. When past sin is gone, your heart is clean and only good will come out. You must want God to deal with sin in your life. He will keep you from stumbling. He calls us to this now. Rom 8:31-39. Do we believe God can set us free from sin? Do we expect God to set us free from sin? Thanks be to God who gives us the victory.
Michael's picture - A pillar rising up, like Jacobs pillar; angels ascending and descending; an open heaven over KCF.

5/11 Diane & Andy West Ps 131 Prayer

Prayer: we make up rules to help us, but they can often confuse or hinder us. Prayer can bring healing. The Hebrew word for healing, Shalom, encompasses health, peace... Prayer is about a relationship with God. Communication is essential in a healthy relationship. The Guild of Health & St Raphael was started by Anglicans in 1915 to promote healing through prayer and a worship lifestyle. It is now an ecumenical movement advising policy makers regarding health. The Greek word sozo encompasses health, wholeness and salvation. The Helmet of Salvation in the armour of God is the helmet of health.
As we connect with Church we can interact at different levels symbolised by three chairs.
Chair 3 - turning from plodding along as a Christian, a deeper commitment can lead to conflict of interests. Discipleship is about rules and regulations. We participate in "Bread-crumb" evangelism.
Chair 2 - still prone to compromise, living a nominal Christianity. We get involved in projects and events. There is an expectation of God blessing what you are doing. Discipleship means to believe and behave. A bit of a struggle and not very much like heaven.
Chair 1 - stronger belief that Heaven is coming now. Your identity is in God. We are doing what He is doing. Discipleship is focusing on the promise instead of the problem.
There is an order of progression - belong, believe, behave. It is a relationship based on love. Jn 15:15 we are no longer servants or slaves.
We become more aware of our failings. Ps 139 search me for any offensive way. How do we deal with this? Repentance is turning round. In prayer we can talk too much; western culture currently values personality over character. [Quiet:The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking", Susan Cain]. Sometimes in prayer we need to say less. We are sitting with Christ in the place of authority. We can approach God any time. Out of our relationship we get to do His stuff. Healing is encouraging people to pray. There can be competition between praying hard and praying soft. There are times for both. We can adopt a prayer strategy. It will fall somewhere between a) turn up on the day and give it every thing you have or b)start gently now and build up. A good start is to begin by being in His presence. Ps 131 would be helpful. Breath prayer is also a helpful starting place. Pray.

29/10 David Seel Eph 3:20 Exceedingly more

Another house move, but part of the plan to establish Fellowship of Nations in Falkirk. House Group due to start in Jan 18, hopefully launching church on 12/8/18. Employment situations and provision has been established. Plans are being fulfilled in answer to prayer. Eph 3:20 - it is amazing to think this way - whatever we think could possibly happen, God thinks of far more than we could! After 5 yrs of continual teaching supply, now in promoted post @ Falkirk High. God knows what He is doing. we need to trust Him. The forward thinking 'wish-list' for the new house became the prayer request. These included the requirements of a ministry centre. Encouraging freedom to allow God to shape the new church.
A lack of faith might expect less than God wants to give. Eph 3:20,21. Exceedingly more. We can never run God dry. He can still do even more. Mt 19:26, all things are possible with God. God is working in the lives of Barry Miller, Doncaster, and his wife. God is moving things around in the field of graduate apprenticeships to bring His plans into play.
When we pray we can limit God because we think He can't do it. If we grasp this truth that He can do so much more, crazy things will happen. Mt 18:19 if we agree, anything can happen. Mt 21:22 ask for anything; Mk 11:24 ask, believe, receive; Jn 14:13 ask anything. Our goal in all this is to bring glory to the Father. Jn 15:15,16. 16:23 ask. Jas 1 wisdom. Jas 1:17 gift. 1 Jn 3 : obey. 1 Jn 5 pleases Him. Have faith, believe He loves us. He will do it.
Often we don't pray because we don't believe He can do it. or we don't want the answer. Hard work pays off. Be careful what we ask for. Pray every day, "Lord, give me someone to speak to". Be patient, it will come. Let it fall into place, don't push till it falls apart. What God is doing in you is more important and significant than what is coming. God will act at the right time. What is God doing in your life? Release people and watch them go. Where have we thought it cannot happen.
Prayer is key. What a friend we have in Jesus, what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. We cannot decide the answer to our prayers. Give faithfully to God. Realise that God is doing things we are not even aware of. Recognise His presence among us. He pours mercy into our lives every day. Go to God first. Trust, believe, have faith. Daily, devote yourself to Him in prayer, trust, service...

22/10 Paul Younger Josh 13:1-9 The Life & Times of Joshua

Josh 13:1-9 The Life & Times of Josh. He is getting older. God points this out to him. How old was he? Ch 24 states he died at age 105, so he was probably around 90 at this time. Noah was 480 when he started to build the ark. Joshua may be weary, he was certainly battle scarred. Serving God is a life time commitment.
We get anxious at politics. We see the pension age rising. There is no retirement age from following God. We may not be as active as we were, but we still have an important part to play. Prayer warriors can be elderly. Jesus words in Lk 9:62 warn us not to look back. We must follow through to the end. Age is relative.
Josh ch 1 contains the promise given to Moses and now Joshua, every place you put your foot will be given to you. At the time of ch 13 there are still lands to be conquered. Some promises have not been kept, for whatever reason. When a promise is made to us, we evaluate the person making it. God's promises are true. God is still at work. There is more to come, just as certain as what has been fulfilled. We couldn't handle it all at once. His time is right. A financial statement of accounts is a summary of what has been given and what is due. British Empire used to be 23.9% of the land on earth. Josh knows these lands, so does God. The King's Roll or Domesday Book contains thousands of facts, figures and details - who owns what and it's value. God is interested in every detail. We are at different points in our life. There is still work and service for us to do. We may be less able to do what we did, but don't grumble, trust God. He has more to give.

17/9 Alan Milnes Josh 21:1-8,41-45. Inheritance

Israel had wiped out all the armies (Josh 11) to allow them to go in and take possession of the land. How is this genocide compatible with the beattitudes? Context is important. Gen 15:13-16 tells of God's promise to Abram, that He will punish the people who enslave and mistreat his descendants. Sometimes they were told to destroy everything, other times, some were spared. Different instructions were given for different situations. The Sermon on Mount is addressed to individuals. In Rom ch 13 the state was rightly acting out God's judgement on the people of Israel.
The lands of Levi were allocated according to Josh 21. The tribe was set apart after the Golden Calf incident (Ex 32). The Levites carried the tabernacle. They instructed the people in the Law. Deut 33:28,29, Moses spoke blessing over Jacob & Israel and prophesied that this time would come. The teaching of the Levites in 2 Chr 17:7-10 led to the fear of God falling on the land. Israel's enemies were afraid.
The legacy of the Levites was not tribal inheritance; they were given 48 towns. God is their inheritance. They are to rely on Him. v45 not one promise failed. When Joshua started his campaign to enter the land he encounters the leader of the Lord's army (Josh 5:13) His response was to ask what God's message was. The Levites ask for God's message about their inheritance. The cities were far from Jerusalem. This ensured that teaching was distributed throughout the land. They called people back to what God was saying. They were people of learning with no legacy. The Levites are model of the church. We are to bring knowledge of the Bible to others. 1 Pet 1:4 we have an inheritance that is imperishable. We can know God, walk with Him, be familiar with His teaching. We are to bring the truth of God of the OT and His justice to those around us. Pray for people. We serve God by serving our communities.

10/9 Hugh Henderson John 1:1-18 The Word

Nyembuye water project now has three pipelines and serves many villages and schools. Water projects are strategic in mission opportunities for MI. This part of Burundi is full of returning refugees whose land has been taken by others. Burundi has 10m people, is the size of Wales and is more densely populated. Opening ceremony at the latest phase of the Nyembuye water project was another opportunity to preach the gospel. Running water at a school entitles them to free meals from the World Food programme. At Church on the Sunday, Hugh's preaching fitted in perfeectly with the series they were studying, despite a conscious decision not to tell him what the series was on.
The Hope Centre is very near an area of conflict and only a short visit was possible. Burundi is very beautiful but very poor. In Uganda, MI were involved in another water well project, school building work, child support, computers, medicine, study materials. God is doing amazing things through the ministry opportunities. Lugazi was the first place Hugh visited in Uganda in 1989.
John 1:1-18 is important as it connects us with the beginning in Genesis. We are not told who the Word was, but we realise it is Jesus. The Trinity, although not specifically mentioned, under-girds all that we understand about who God is in the Bible. The Jews only had experience of one God. John was taking a risk writing this message, especially to Jews.
v2, the Word is a person and is present with God. They were face to face, very close.
v4 is very important, in Jesus is life itself. When we compare the covenant with Abram, where God put him to sleep as he wouldn't be able to walk through the scarifice (God did it for him). Jesus also went through the sacrifice for us on His own as we were unable to take the punishment for our sin. Moses met God twice: at the burning bush and up the mountain. His face glowed from having been in the presence of the light. The light was beyond what we can imagine. We need protection to stand in the light of God's presence. Stephen saw Jesus standing. Saul also saw Jesus and was blinded. Saul was brutal against the believers. He was completely overwhelmed by Jesus' appearance on the Damascus road. We need to meditate on this light and get to know its source.
v5 There's much spiritual darkness around. Jesus accesses this generation through people.
v6 John the Baptist was a man sent from God. All of us are also sent from God. When Jesus came, it wasn't to do everything, but to show us how to do the work.
v7 we are the witnesses. We understand this word, the light has shone in our lives. A torch shone in a mirror gives double the light. The light lets us see what is around us. The point is so that all men believe. A witness tells what they see. John the Baptist was called to be a witness.
v8 John the Baptist he was not the light. In the OT God fed the people on manna, the NT tells us Christ is bread of life.
v9 Isaiah proclaims the light has come, John declares Jesus is the true light.
v10 When He came Jesus wasn't recognised.
v11, His own, the Jews rejected Him.
vv12,13 We are born again. We have a right to be His children.
We have a message about one who is from before the beginning of time.

3/9 Dawn Martindale Rev 1:9-20 Message for the Church.

A recent book launch at Highland Theological College featured The Invisible Church by Steve Aisthorpe, Mission Development Worker for the Church of Scotland. As Church we are re-adjusting and re-balancing. Larger denominational congregations may be shrinking, but the Church is growing.
In Revelation John is given a vision for the Churches. Numbers in the Bible have significance. The number seven symbolises completeness; this message is for all the churches (not just the seven named here). Church is not just the big denominations. Church is also two people meeting over coffee.
Sometimes we can feel a minority. John was on Patmos in isolation for a punishment. The Greek 'thlipsei' is tribulation, suffering, pressure, squeezing - like an elipse under pressure. This message of hope is for all God's Kingdom.
John hears loud sounds which get his attention, then he sees the symbols. Mt 18:19,20 where 2 or 3 agree or gather in the Name of Jesus, He is there. Jesus is powerful. John is afraid. Jesus is very bright. We need the light to grow. White = purity. Bronze = integrity, justice. Fire is a metaphor for God's presence (Moses & burning bush). Jesus' voice is the sound of many waters. Water is powerful and cleansing, God's Word. Sword of justice and truth. God is overwhelmingly powerful; He is for us not against us - Rom 8:31!
Daniel also had a vision where a 'Son of Man' appeared (Dan 7:13). He is the one who links heaven with earth. God's rule is timeless. The ancient of days is here now. His angels (seven stars) are fighting for the Church; Daniel tells of angels fighting spiritual battles for groups of people. Ch 12:1 Michael is protecting God's people. Jesus holds and protects us. In 2 Kg 6 Elisha was trapped in Dothan, but God's army was greater than the king of Aram's. Angels are on our side.
Steve Aisthorpe has researched the rebalancing of church in Scotland from large congregations to smaller less prominent gatherings. Like an iceberg, they appear small, but are greater than they look. There is more freedom, more relationship. Gold lampstands, dedicated to God. Spreading the light of the Kingdom. Lev 24:2, keep the lamp burning. Trust Jesus to look after us. Bring the offering of oil and He will keep the lamp burning. He knows all about us and our situations. We are the light, shine, focus outwardly. Spread the Gospel.

27/8 David Seel Ps 119:41-47 Trusting God.

Living as a Christian (or a non-Christian) there are so many things going on. God plays a big part in all of these things. In all that is happening, am I really trusting God, or just hoping I'm trusting Him? How do you know you are really trusting Him? In personal situations e.g. hospital visits for investigation for possible hernia or breathless, do I trust Him? (All came back clear.) When doing 20 flights in a year and committing each journey to God, trusting Him. When deciding how to much to tithe, just do it right. All of these contribute to knowing God's favour and blessing.
Nothing has been resolved yet regarding the move to Texas. Live believing what God has told you to. How to know you are trusting. Ps 119:41-47. It tells of the difference when God works in you. It is amazing. We show we are trusting God by…
v41 receiving His unfailing love. Paul says "test yourself to see if you are in the faith", 2 Cor 13:5. We are saved by God's promises. v42 sometimes we need to tell what God is doing; we can answer any one who taunts us. Look for the questions that provoke you to preach? Yes, we are all sinners, but where is their sin? The sin of the Christian has gone, others still have their sin. Know God is there, attach yourself completely to Him. v43 - never take word of hope from me. How we wait shows how much we are depending on Him. What we say demonstrates how much we are trusting Him (while we're waiting). Isa 40:31 trust in the Lord and find new strength, rise up as eagles. Many people in Bible had to wait. Heb 6:15 - Abraham waited 25 years, Joseph waited 13 years (Gen 41) & Job. Job's friends tried to advise, but he knew God had a plan.
Enduring - Jesus endured his death. Endurance is hard. It was required by many and also you. Heb 12:2 Jesus is the perfector of faith. The fulfilment of the promise comes after the condition. It's worth the wait. When we go jumping ahead, it falls apart, when we wait it falls into place. v45. How you walk shows you are depending on Him. Faith = leaving the big picture to God, walk in the way. Esther went through a lot of preparation before 'such a time as this'. We are born to be in the families, jobs, places where God puts us. Be ready. Be faithful. Be obedient. Work through the mundane. Your training matters. A time will come when you need it and you can put it into practice.
v46, the way we witness. Speak of statutes before kings. John Piper commented that ssm is a result of the normalisation of gay lifestyles. We are created to be better than normal. It's about God not us. Use where you are to be a witness. What is our story? What has God done in us? We don't have to put the broken bits together before we go to God. Go to God, let Him put the bits back together. He will be with you. How God transforms is powerful, you are the evidence. Impact people for eternity.
By the way we worship vv46,47. delight. Worship on the inside and the outside. How long is list of things you get excited about? What are they? Are we asking the wrong questions of God? We should be asking who do You want me to become, instead of what do You want me to do? Serve Jesus wherever, whatever you are doing. Who am I to be now? Who before do. Why before what. Consider your motives, this matteers to God, Col 3:17. Spend time talking to God and reading His Word. Find the place where you hear from God. Do we ever get too old for what God wants you to do? Speak out, worship, leave the outcome to God.

20/8 Richard Hobson Phil 2:12-18 Stop Complaining.

(Whether the sermon topic is new or re-visited, Paul tells us in Phil 3:1 that to hear the same thing is safe - i.e. a safeguard)
The Bible has lots of commands and instructions. When we consider all the ones we have not done, we feel we have failed and we feel a sense of guilt and disappointment. We must start with the gospel! This way we won't approach the commands legalistically or fearfully. We need a grace filled view of scripture. Our salvation is not based on our performance. There is no condemnation in Christ.
Phil 2:12-18. First of all, v14, be clear - we are to do all things without grumbling or questioning. Our attitude has no affect on God's relationship with us, but it changes how the world sees us. Why do we grumble? The truth is we are in a wicked generation! The world is full of things that shouldn't be happening. This is not a request to pretend things are not broken. The reason is to be blameless, v15. How do we appear? Do we shine? We hope that those around us would sense a dramatic difference. Intend to be blameless. Our response to events will show we are different. It's a really high calling. There's no condemnation. God wants to show Himself to the world through us.
v16 hold fast to the Word of God. Don't focus on the sin, focus on Word of Christ. Believe what God says about Himself, us and the world. Recognise His righteousness and justice. His love is unfailing. Theology is life and death. There's nowhere else to turn. Taste His goodness; there is no comparison to what world can offer. His Kingdom is coming.
Brokenness can be very close to us. Acknowledge the brokenness but hold fast to God's Word. Meditation, mindfulness, not watered-down Buddhism, will help us to grow in this area. It is Biblical to focus on God and seeing His goodness. It's hard, but very worthwhile and transforming. Dwell on a verse or short passage. It's God's plan that we dwell on His Word. 2 Tim 3:14, think over God's Word. The goal is to let the truth fill our hearts and minds. Remembering what we read is a spiritual act. Having God's Word to hand in daily situations is a great benefit. v16 be proud of what you do. Paul wrote v17 in prison. Our standing with God is unchanged. Shine as light in the world. A testimony of being glad and rejoicing in suffering shows God's light to the world. His peace is greater.

13/8 Harry Sprange Ps 57 Confidence

Ps 57 is a contrast in situations. It's a hard situation that turns into praise. The Church in Scotland lacks confidence. 1 Jn 2:28 urges us to be confident at the return of Jesus. There are three types of people: the worldly who will be terrified at Jesus coming, ashamed Christians and those who are ready for His return. Mt 24:26 warns us to be ready for His return as it will be sudden. 1 Jn 3:21 tells us that because God sets us free from condemnation we cause to be confident. Ch 4:17 - be confident, 5:14 pray and ask God for things with confidence. This is essential to Christian life.
Eph 3:12 - Jesus gives us the freedom to approach God in confidence. Heb 4:16 assures us we can approach God's throne confidently, 10:19 - we do this by the blood of Jesus, 10:22 - He wants us to draw near to Him.
Naturally, we avoid people who tell us off. We often think this way about God expecting He will reject us. Jesus came for many reasons. He came to make us righteousness - 2 Cor 5 :21 we become righteousness of God. This is the theme of Romans. In Rom 1:17 Paul writes about the gospel of righteousness by faith. Embrace this Good News. Rom 3:22 God gives all believers righteousness. He save us from unrighteousness. The majority will be made righteousness.
Phil 3:9 righteousness through faith, from God is what we must apply to daily life. Does God look on us and see Jesus? We need this confidence. There is a difference between humility and timidity. We are not to behave arrogantly, but we must know we are forgiven. Many of us still carry guilt that has not been confessed. eg pre conversion sin. Know that Jesus came to take away sin. If it has been removed then we are not guilty.
On the Day of Atonement, there were two goats, a sacrificial one and scapegoat. Jesus fulfilled both. It is the devil who condemns; it is Holy Spirit who convicts. Don't look at yourself, look at Jesus. Two of the disciples betrayed Jesus: Judas was condemned, Peter was restored. Sometimes we need root treatment, face the pain for the long term benefit.
There are five categories of sin. From out-right rebellion to unintentional slipping up. They are confessed differently. Confession is hard and gets harder as you get older. It is harder to confess a motive or attitude than an act. Teenagers go through rebellion. Why did you start smoking? Peer pressure, rebellion, pleasure? The basis of sin is a dislike of self, of how God made me. Find out what is unresolved and take measures to resolve it. Most can be sorted on your own, some may require prayer/ministry. Remember - everything has been covered by the blood of Jesus.

6/8 Alan Seel Phil 3:1-14 Run well.

(Dunblane cathedral, a grand setting, but is there evidence of the presence of God? KCF, not so ornate, yet God is here.)
How are you? Phil 3:1-14. Paul has a bond with the Philippians. v13,14 encourage us to keep pressing on. Are you running well? As we progress it gets harder, things change. We still connect with those running. We try to forget what is behind. We learn from it; from the failure and the disappointment.
Paul had stood watching Stephen's death, he persecuted church. Then on the Damascus road he met Jesus. Alan asked Jesus into his life aged 7. He lived in Singapore as his dad was in the army. When they moved to Fort William he was helping the evangelists. In Aberdeen, he reconnected with God 30 yrs ago. What is your story? What has happened? Note what you experienced, but put it aside, look forward. Be in the present, but strain towards what is ahead.
Are you fulfilling your call, living the vision? Throughout 'normal' living, we take Jesus with us. Where we go, He goes. 2 Cor 4:7 our treasure is in jars of clay. We have had hardship. Satan tries to take away our peace and joy and bring temptation. Ps 73:2 has your foot almost slipped? As we age our bodies don't work properly, we lose friends. We have a Saviour. There is power in name of Jesus, we have the victory. Heb 3:14, 10:35 hold onto your confidence. Increase your knowledge of God. Get in God's grace. Live daily in His grace and peace. It is good to depend on peace in your heart.
Have faith in God, He is bigger than me. His love is greater. Hope! we have a certain future in God. An anchor in the present struggles. Charles Spurgeon, “Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the windows which hope has opened.”. Aim for the prize, run well, keep up training. Keep active, avoid the wrong things. Press on for we have the prize in sight. It is our destiny in God. See where you are now, move forward. Your life has purpose, life matters, make an impact. It's yours for the taking. Run well.

23/7 Paul Younger Josh 9:1-27 Deceit, dishonour, disappointment.

Greetings from Bob & Pam, Philip & Susanne
A Gibeonite deception. Josh 9:1-27. The Corbonite Manoeuvre in Star Trek is similar, where the captain uses deception to overcome his enemy. TV programmes sometimes have subtitles. Although the typing errors on live programmes can be hilarious, they help us to understand.
Deceit, disappointment, dishonour. After 40 yrs in the desert, Israelites are now in the promised land. Their opponents are falling like skittles. Jericho's walls just fell down, Ai has been overcome. The other nations are panicking, so they join together. There is one dissenting voice. Gibeon has a different plan, they try to trick them. In the best cons, preparation is everything. Old clothes and food. Rehearsed lines. A stellar performance!
The Israelites question them at first, then get taken in. Josh made a treaty, they are completely deceived. Two examples of dishonour. 1 Gibeonite were found to live close by. Israel was tricked. Josh stand by treaty. The assembly grumbled against the leaders. 2. Less obvious, more serious, Israel dishonoured God. They did not seek God's advice or enquire of Him. They do honour Him by keeping their promise in His name. Disappointment was the ultimate outcome. Be careful what you wish for. They had spared lives, but were paying the price for it with continued menial servanthood. You can deceive people, but not God. Honesty is the best policy. Deceit may be short term. Honour God seek Him in all things. Don't think we don't need His help.

16/7 Ewan MacLeod Isa 6:1-8 Stepping out.

George & Caroline Snyman started Hands at Work. In South Africa 18% of the population have AIDS. There are thousands of orphans. Where they have no fathers, they are drawn into gangs. As well as physical poverty there is social poverty. Conditions are bad in South Africa, but they can be much worse outside SA. Hands At Work invest in the communities. Many care workers are African who were rescued and are giving back. The work extends to forty communities across Africa. Children have no paperwork, so are not able to attend school or claim benefits. HaW give food, clothing, schooling. George & Caroline were Christians, but after George had a face-to-face encounter with Jesus, they decided to help the poor. In SA the white people normally drive past townships. Hands At Work involve the community and the church. This is recognised as best practice. Isa 6:8. Missionaries will start to come from SA to Scotland because we have lost something of the gospel. For these desperate people, food, education and health care are being provided by a caring community.

9/7 Ryan Robertson Rev 21:1-5 New Heaven and New Earth.

Recent phone call re teacher ill in hosp; visited her in hospice; now gone from this earth. Heaven will be amazing. We will live eternally with God. This comes after judgement by Him where we will give our full account. Heaven will be full of joy. Mt 25:34, heaven is an inheritance from the foundation of the world. Rev 22:3 the city of service and worship to God. Jn 14:2,3 He prepared the place for us and comes back to bring us to this place. We will worship Jesus. New heavens and new earth which are everlasting are promised in Isa 66:22. God promises Christ will come again. John's vision. A new alliance with heaven and earth. Are we going to God or is He coming here. He will dwell with us. He walked with Adam and Eve. He lives in us. In the new place His presence will be tangible. Mt heaven is where God is. Isa 66:1. We will share in blessing of new earth. All creation will be there to worship God. There will be rejoicing. It is clearly a place. He prepares a place for us. Acts 1:9. v11 Jesus ascended. Dead in Christ rise first. God came to dwell among us. He will receive His bride. We are transformed as Jesus was. A glorified, resurrection body. We have that hope. Promise - we will live with Him. Stephen saw the glory of God come. There is a place with activities for us. A very good place. Sin will be removed. We will live in righteousness. By God's grace. Rev 19:9 marriage supper, we will eat and drink. Lk 22:18 Jesus will drink in heaven. Rev 22:1 river of life, for us, in abundance. The tree of life, v2. A place of joy, beauty, abundance. No more crying or pain. Free flowing. A city with the glory of God. While God visited the garden, He will dwell in heaven. Nothing unclean. Have a heart to reach the lost, bring them to Jesus.

2/7 Harry Sprange 1 Pet 2 :4-10 Priesthood of believers

31st October 2017 celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Martin Luther nailed his '95 theses' to the Wittenberg church door. He rediscovered the 'priesthood' of all believers. v4, a holy priesthood; v9 a royal priesthood. Ex 19:6 a kingdom of priests. What is priesthood? Rev 1:6 & 5:10 a kingdom and priests to serve God, 20:6 priests of God and of Christ. It's all through scripture and all based on the Ex 19 promise of God to Israel.
Little is known about the spiritual life of Israel in Egypt. Sinai is where they get to know God and He invites them to be priests. He wants to pitch His tent amongst us. What went wrong? Ex 20:18-21 the people saw the smoke, were afraid and drew back. Aaron and his family were called to be priests, Levites. Deut 10:8 they are to carry and administer (serve) God's presence (the ark), stand before Him (worship) and pronounce blessing (outpouring).
Moses teaches them what to do and how to live in desert. Then later, how to live in promise land, Deut 4:5. Deut 21 v5 the sons of Levi are to step up to bless and to judge. God always desires a people on earth to represent Him. The promised land was to be a demonstration of God's life on earth. A life of justice and of purity. Deut 4:5-8 they were to live this life and show it to all the nations. The priests represent God's character to the people and represent the people to God. Jesus was so angry in temple that the house of prayer for nations was now being used as fund-raiser.

    Living and acting as priests:
  1. Minister to God, protect the tabernacle from unholiness, promote worship. 1 Chr 15 the correct and glorious entrance of the ark amid the musicians and singers. 1 Chr 23:5 there were 4000 appointed musicians.
  2. Stand before the Lord, be in His presence. Samuel ministered to God, 2:11. Listen to God, 1 Sam 3:10. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, enter His courts with praise, worship God in word, song and in silence. False prophets not standing in God's presence will be banished and cast out, Jer 23:12,39. God speaks through the prophets, Amos 1:3,6,9,11,13…
  3. Bless Deut 21:5. Num 6:27 putting God's name on the people and He blesses them. Blessing is not revoked, Num 23:20. 1 Pet 3:9 pay back evil and insult with blessing. cf The Message (no retaliation, your job - to bless). We impart blessing. Pass on God's goodness, He is overwhelmingly good. Speak out, "I bless you in the name of Jesus". Deut 7:12-15. He will put a blessing on the people, Ps 115:12.

Our lifestyle is to be one of ministering to God, standing in His presence and blessing the world. Serving God is a joy.

25/6 Ryan Robertson Zech 4:6 Spirit Life.

Zech 4:6 not by might, but by Spirit of God. We need to be true to God's Word. The call of God is on all of our lives. Always rely on God and no one else. Jer 29:11 God will guide us. Seek the Spirit to discern the way forward. Trust His command. Learn to please God more than people. He knows what is best. All of God (Father, Son, Spirit) were creating the earth Gen 1:2, Heb 1:2. Jesus continues His work - as perfector, Heb 12:2. Our daily lives are to be lived out looking to God. Be secure in Him.
Ps 103:19 God has established His sovereignty. We are called to serve in God's domain. Be ready to serve and love with the heart of a servant. Rely on Christ who is the supreme King, Eph 1:21. He is sovereign. Be a family that honours God, hear His voice and live Jn 5:25.
Jesus is the High priest Heb 4:14,15; the lamb of God Jn 1:29. He took our place. His judgement should guide our thinking and actions. Seek Holy Spirit, He will teach you 1 Jn 2:27. How do we know what is from God? It is by Holy Spirit. Stand on what the Bible says. Teach and defend His Word. Focus on staying true to His Word. Be faithful to the gospel. Be ready to minister. Ps 103:18, follow His ways, walk in His paths.
Holy Spirit enlightens the truth. Seek HS and be discerning. Satan used scripture against Jesus. Jn 16:13 - HS understands all truth and guides us into the truth. God is one, a God of wholeness and one-ness.
Biblical inerrancy. Believe this. Scripture is sufficient for us. Rev 22:18 warns us not to add or take from scripture. Pray and believe that you act in God's will. Christ was the servant King. Fellowship with God and one another. Build yourself and one another. The road of faith can be bumpy, but God is faithful. Will we trust Him? Expect blessing. Receive thankfully what He provides.
Testimony: God has made a way for a friend's wedding. The CofS view of marriage is questionable. God's ways are different. Call from 121 regarding wrong box ticked on application for ministry. At Uni, discussion on Church planting. Hoping to meet in a local Church. Applying for charity. Meeting in a house till Jan, 11 people. God has answered 2 parts of plea, Louise came to faith and is attending Church.

18/6 Richard Hobson Lamentations 3:1-26 Hope.

Usually as we meet together as Church we want to be encouraged. What would God say to us today from His Word? Lamentations is a series of 5 poems for the fall of Jerusalem. A public expression of grief, which at that time was appropriate and culturally acceptable. This was a dark period in Israel's history, a terrible event. Their reality was being faced, not hidden away. Although Jerusalem fell, God didn't. In dark, historical episodes God shines with supernatural light and hope.
Lam 3:1-26 contains expressions of anguish. Was it God who brought them to this place? God is sovereign and in control. God uses Nebuchadnezzar for His purposes in reprimanding His people. The Christian life can be lived in any country under any circumstances. The cost may be much greater in some more than others. v18 states that all hope has gone, but v21 shows that hope can still be called to mind. The mind is the battleground. This brings a reminder of who God is and hope is stirred. Know the facts about God. The OT is full of "don't forget" phrases. He remembers the steadfast love of God. Unchanging despite the weather or your feelings. God's mercies are renewed, they are unending. New every morning.
Never measure love of God by current circumstances. Jesus is the measure of God's love for us. v23 is a declaration of faith. God hasn't changed. His perfect and wise will is coming to pass. Thank God he doesn't always do what we want. v24 his soul declares God's greatness, acknowledging His provision. God Himself is the 'gift' to us. He does not spread Himself very thinly around everyone. We have a big share of God. The human soul is designed to search for God and find satisfaction in Him. He is enlightenment, beauty and fulfilment. No earthly portion is suitable for our soul. The earthly portion distracts from the heavenly portion. Don't wait for Jerusalem to be rebuilt (or your circumstance to be resolved). God is our portion now. This waiting and seeking is for something we don't have yet. God is good while we are waiting. Waiting for God is a good place! v26. God dwells in majesty and beauty. What will we call to mind tomorrow? Seek God, make time for this. Don't rob yourself of the benefits of knowing God.

11/6 Jim Neilson Mk 14:53-72 Who am I, why am I here? How shall I live?

The country, the world, the whole place is a mess. What is it all about? Individual rights have trumped sensibility.
Who am I?   In Mk 14 Jesus was accused of being a false prophet, but He knew in himself who he was. He didn't need to defend himself. Peter was accused of being with Jesus. Peter lacks the confidence Jesus had and denies who he is. 2 Tim 1:7 assures us we don't need to be timid. Human law is contrary to God's law. We are to stand on His law, we are to stand firm and remain firm. In modern society we are told that we cannot disagree. God doesn't expect us all to agree, but He does expect us to respect and honour each other. God and His word will upset people. We are not to judge sinfulness; we all sin differently. Too many Christians cross the line of judgement. Jesus remained silent for most of the time, despite all the false accusations and insults thrown at Him. He is confident who He is. Culture and society will throw lots at us. Don't be intimidated.
Why am I here?   The Romans stopped the priests carrying out the death penalty. The Sanhedrin needed to convince Rome to kill Jesus because He was challenging their king. Jesus, the judge of the whole earth, was ironically being judged by people of the earth. Jesus is not blaspheming. The priests do not realise who He really is and assume that He is committing blasphemy. Daniel's vision (7:9) is of the Son of Man taking His throne. David also has the vision of Jesus on the throne beside the Father in Ps 110. This is about Jesus being given His throne. Jesus claim to be God is plain, no more parables or cryptic references. He chooses to reveal His identity. CS Lewis wrote that either Jesus is God or was completely mad. Peter was also wondering "Why am I here?". He is outed by a slave girl, but gives in to fear and denies any association with Jesus. We must bear witness to the truth about Jesus. Is there enough evidence to convict me of being Christian? We will experience trials and testing, but God is with us in the floods and the flames. We don't always know what going on, but God knows.
How shall I live?   We are called to know Him and witness to Him. Matt 20:26-28 explains the Kingdom principle of serving, sacrifice and giving your life. Jesus was beaten and mocked, but He didn’t retreat. Peter's trust in himself was inadequate. He should have trusted in Jesus. In the 21st century 'my feelings' and 'my rights' are valued more than truth and justice. Slaves had no rights. Lk 17:7-10 shows that all of us are unworthy servants, just doing our duties. When you are criticised do you give up or press on? Moses, according to Exodus, was constantly criticised. Frustration did cost him the promised land, but he kept going. There is tension between truth and mercy. Finding your identity is difficult. We are called to be maturing Christians living in society bringing God's Kingdom without being self righteousness. Identity is key to young people; they need meaning. Take every opportunity to guide them.

4/6 Oskar Forbes Acts 2:1-47 Time & Language.

What is the time of your life? We never seem to have enough time to do what we want. Experience shows us how important time is. Sometimes it drags, mostly it flies. Ecclesiastes - a time for everything …a time for being loud, a time for being quiet. 2016 was a crazy year (remember all the news headlines). Esther was born for her time. We too, are born for our time and can impact our world.
Jesus birth frames our time. Whether AD or CE, His birth is the reference point. Gal 4:4 states that Jesus came at exactly the right time. Young people today are 2nd or 3rd generation of people from non-church background. Schools are using pop songs to replace hymns in assembly and they are not always appropriate for children. Young people need to reply instantly to social media. OED word of year for 2013 was 'selfie'. They are a self-obsessed generation. They are being advised to turn the camera round and look at the world. In 2015 the word of year was an 'emoji' - the yellow laughing/smiling face. 2016 was characterised by Post-truth due to Brexit & Trump. People's versions of events were different to reality. Alternative facts are lies. George Orwell's book '1984' is a top five best seller. Public opinion is valued as more important than truth. Society declares that our definition is all that matters.
Today in the West we have ease of access to scriptures. It is great for us. Every day life can be interesting and exciting. We could help young people to see through the lies. Coffee ministry can reach people. 170 teas/coffees/hot-chocolates were served in a 40 min lunch break at the High Schools. Avoid cringe, show you care about them. Faith exploration opportunities are coming in the next few weeks. Arts and music are important. Film also teaches the power of story. Gen Z, our young people are digital. They are lacking empathy. Inter-generational guidance is desperately required to avoid them becoming like this segment of a reverse poem reading down and instead develop into those described by reading the poem up.
"It’s not true at all that
Faith and life actually match up with us
What’s clear to everyone who meets us is
  We are self-obsessed, self-observed nobody's
It is a joke to think that
  There is hope"

GROW are helping P7's moving to High School, and will be involved in final assemblies. Pray for and support the work in our schools and Church groups. There may be opportunities for mutual mentoring between older people and younger people.
Oskar's family were foundational in building his faith. His parents met at BTI (ICC). The Forbes Clan motto - 'Grace me guide' is most appropriate. He studied Divinity at Aberdeen and Teaching training in Glasgow. Started work as RMPS teacher in Glenwood High School. God called him back to youthwork and started with GROW in 2016. Working with Parish Assistants and other volunteers they are sharing same Christian message across all the schools.

28/5 Dougie McGeachin Heb 1:1,2 Discipleship.

The 'Calf Path' by Sam. W. Foss tells of a trail made by an young animal's meanderings, trodden down (years) later by a dog, sheep. It becomes a crooked lane, then a city street. Men's thinking can be like this, wandering, futile. Most of what we do in contemporary church is not biblical. We follow a beaten path of others, of religious traditions. We don't question, but just follow what they do. To stop changing or stop growing is to die. Thankfully with God there is always a remnant that continues.
In Ireland there are ruins, remains of a monastery. Once there was life there, now it is bereft. Some old churches look sad. Many are relics, surrounded by weeds. What will future generations see of what we leave behind? Little progress has been made. Have we even regressed? We need to experience the work of God in our lives. Little of our energy is spent on making disciples. How can we reach people?
We go through stages in our Christian development. It starts childlike, we then add meaning and understanding. We form our beliefs. We settle in to Church life, we defend our beliefs. We follow the tribe. Some move on to a reflective stage. This usually tends to be individual. The rest are threatened by this. Jesus came, not to make us comfortable. We discover the truth is more complex than we thought.
There is a call of God to do what He has for us, not just maintain our way. Heb 1:1,2. Jesus is speaking to His Church. Rev 3:22 hear what He is saying. Nothing will change if we keep maintaining our structures. Disciples were told to take gospel to the world. The fullness of the gentiles wasn't supposed to take 2000 yrs. People are still lost. Our plans are not working. God calls us to fish for people. Listen for opportunities. God has a plan, a purpose for us. Jn 15:16 Jesus chose us to bear fruit. He died to save the lost. Look at what you have been doing. What can we do differently, better? Find someone to bring into the Kingdom. Reveal the depth of resources from already within you.

21/5 Paul Younger Josh 5:13-15 Title.

The Isdal woman was discovered dead and badly burned on a mountain in Norway during Nov 1970. Her identity is still a mystery. She has been linked with many countries and many names, but no one knows who she was. A 'Who is it?' mystery. Joshua is wondering 'Who is it?' when he has an encounter with a stranger near Jericho. This is soon after the people of Israel have crossed over into the land God promised to them. "Who are you?" He asks the man with the drawn sword. Not a surprise in the situation where they are about to go into battle. The answer is completely unexpected. Joshua's response is even stranger. This man was special; not just a man.
Perhaps it was an angel? The Bible usually states when it is an angel that appears. Angels are not to be worshipped and will rebuke worship.
It is possibly a theophany, a manifestation of God himself. Joshua is not mystified. The person received Joshua's worship. He gave Joshua the same instruction He gave Moses. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy". Joshua responded promptly. God keeps His promises. He promised to be with with Moses. He also promised to be with Joshua.
Is it possibly a Christophany, a manifestation of Jesus? The 'difference' between God as Father and God as Son is not important.
Joshua question at first might have seemed odd? However, he needed to work out how to address the stranger. The reply also appears strange, was this a three way conflict? Reality is that God is not on anyone's side. He is not on the side of sports teams that huddle and pray before a match, or anyone about to face a conflict. The good news is that Joshua is on God's side! Joshua knew his place as God's servant. Never assume God is on our side. This is extremely arrogant. Make sure you are on His side. God keeps promises. Comply with God's instructions promptly. Don't expect His blessing if you don't give Him your obedience.

14/5 David Seel Joshua 7:1-26 Courage.

Update : US Immigration said no to Visa application again. Starting again with new application for Assistant Pastor. The person who got the promoted post that David applied for has left. There has been a pattern of eventually getting to do what was aimed for. God's vision is right, the timing is entirely His. Stress says it must happen now, faith waits for God. US trip planned for this summer.

In school there is contact with many people, all react differently to situations. Hard work goes into putting things in place, then someone else moves the goal posts. This brings disappointment. Setting goals and not reaching them is tough. There are many life events and highly recommended experiences that fail to meet expectations. Not all our plans are realised. We feel discouragement when our investment in people doesn't reach fulfilment. Sometimes we don't know how to resolve the disappointment. Criticism can also set us back. Comparison to others can lead to despondency. When there is no perceived answer to prayer, we struggle.
When we turn to God's Word we get the answers. Today's situation is just a scene in the story. Jesus healed the sick; He was hung on cross. The head once crowned with thorns is now crowned with glory. God doesn't give you half a story. Our story is still being written by a Father who loves us. He will lead us no matter what.
Josh 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." In Ch 3 the river is stopped, in Ch 4 they take the memorial stones from the river, in Ch 6 the walls of Jericho fell. Joshua is called by God and amazing things happen. It all goes to plan till Ch 7. Joshua was identified as the leader. He gets lots of victories then disaster comes at Ai. Later in Ch 8 they overcome Ai. Achan caused God's anger. Joshua over came. Joshua returns to scene of defeat. We fight in the flesh, we desire what is forbidden. How do we move on? God's words to Joshua are for us today. We fight from victory. Rom 6:14. We live in freedom of His grace. 2 Cor 5:17 we are new creations. 2 Pet 1:4 God gives us His divine nature. Jn 16:13 - HS teaches us; Spirit of truth. 1 Cor 15:57 we have the victory, it is given to us. We are saved to be set free to walk according to His will. He instructs and guides us.
Joshua positioned himself to trust God. Human wisdom can lead to defeat. God always has a plan for His people to follow. His thoughts are not our thoughts. After Ai God gives all the other lands that were not even on the first list. Wait for God to give the instruction to get all that was planned. Be alert! He may ask you to things differently the next time. Trust fills the gap when we don't understand. He will take us from where we are at to where we need to be in His time and in His way. Go back to where the problem occurred, pick up, move forward in perseverance. This is how the reward comes. Perseverance requires more training and effort and strategy. Heb 12:1 run with perseverance. 2 Pet 1:5 add to your faith... perseverance. 1 Tim 4:16 - in life, in doctrine, persevere - position yourself to fight the good fight. Determine how you deal with discouragement and distractions. Have a spiritual training plan. Position yourself to respond to situations and adversity. The scene will change. He is writing your story. Defeat is not the end. Revisit the place of defeat : look for the new method. Move forward, be strong and courageous.

7/5 Andrea Mill Thankfulness.

While walking along a coast path, loud screams came from a woman who had fallen. Although it sounded very serious, she was able to stand and walk away. Despite stopping to assist her and lend support, she never said thank you. There was a jarring in the spirit. Appreciation makes us feel loved. Jesus was asked what the greatest command was - to love God and others. He calls us to honour, love and respect others. What does thankfulness do for us and for others? It lifts us and encourages them.
God planted the garden of Eden for Adam and Eve. After they gave in to temptation they were sent out into a sinful fallen world. God knew His people and knew their hearts. That is why He put the laws and festivals in place: so they would take time to be together and be thankful! 1 Chron 16:4 tells us that David appointed people to give thanks to God before the ark. 1 Chron 6:33, he appointed Heman and groups of Kohathites and Merarites to be singers and musicians and lead the worship. Giving thanks is so important David made jobs for them to encourage thankfulness. Nehemiah appointed two choirs to give thanks (Neh 12:40).
We thank God for many things... who He is, His goodness, love, mercy, faithfulness, deliverance, healing, victory over evil. We must thank God for all answers to prayer. We thank Him for His provision, all we have is what He allows. We thank Him for the beauty of creation; for Jesus. We can trust Him for so much more than our situations. His invitation to us is to dance, not being a wallflower alone on the perimeter. Express thankfulness through dance, worship and offerings. Acknowledge that everything comes from Him.
Jesus had to come as the Law was inadequate. God took the people by the hand, and wrote His ways on their hearts. We are living in this time of love and mercy. Jesus at the last supper with his disciples gave thanks; before He did miracles He gave thanks; after healing He gave thanks. Col 3:15 live in peace, be thankful. Sing with thankfulness. Come to worship with thankful hearts, speak sing and give thanks (Eph 5:19-20). Thankfulness is so important in our relationship. It is linked to peace. Focus on what you have, not what you don't or what others have. Be hopeful and content. Be aware of everything around you, give thanks and be encouraged. Thankfulness helps us to overcome. Look to God: where your help comes from.
Don't get involved in worldliness, remain in wholesome thankfulness. It's our witness, Eph 5:4. It's easy to go with crowd and be negative and course. Thankfulness is a weapon against the enemy. It builds your life, overflow with thankfulness. Build your faith. Consequences tend towards independence. Rom 1;21-3 warns that not giving thanks to God leads to folly, bitterness and a distorted view of God. 1 Thes 5:16-18 explains God's will for our lives. These truths are for living. It is not all about me, it is about Him in me. Surrender to Him. Cultivate an attitude of thankfulness. This will change us to be like Jesus. Burst out in thankfulness. Col 3:15 - be thankful.

30/4 Paul Younger Josh 1:1-18 Be bold.

Be strong and courageous. The beginning of book of Joshua, but not beginning of story of Joshua. Leading the people of Israel into the promised land was supposed to be Moses crowning achievement, but it wasn't. He died before the day arrived. It was not what Joshua expecting. It was quite inconvenient. Josh is now the top man. This was now Joshua's charge.
Which of the many meanings pf this word is correct here? When God gives you a job, you don't negotiate a fee with Him, so it's not Joshua's reward. It's not even a military operation where they all run at the enemy. It means God is calling him and expecting him to do this task. God always has a person for a job. He knows who will carry it out the way He requires.
The job is straight forward but that does not always mean it will be simple. Moses left big shoes to fill. The inhabitants would not just give up their land to the Israelites. Joshua must have been daunted. Did he have what it took? Moses was gone, it was now time for Joshua to step up. Be strong God tells Him. He knows his weaknesses and gives reassurance. He also gives instruction to start moving.
Joshua was chosen by God. Moses was chosen. We try to find excuses to avoid God's call to us. His choices are not always obvious, but will always be right. God will supply what Joshua lacks. Joshua had learned from Moses, he had the written law. Follow the instruction manual. Read, remember and obey His Word. God promises to always be with him. We are not alone. God is with us. His task is big, but not impossible. What charge is God giving me? Am I willing to accept and obey?

23/4 Alan Seel Jn 20:19-29 Overcoming Doubt.

Christ is Risen! Be happy! Many reject the real Easter message choosing to focus on holidays or chocolate. The world has changed, but the message is the same. We need to share it in relevant and appropriate ways. We have a new beginning and salvation. However, we are human and are affected by situations. There will be tribulation according to Jn 16:33. It is important how we deal with whatever comes along. We can learn from Thomas. The doubter? perhaps. He was a Galilean, a disciple of Jesus who was with Him when He learned of the death of Lazarus, Jn 11:16. He heard Jesus promise to prepare a place for us Jn 14:3-7. He met with Jesus after the resurrection Jn 20:26. After the ascension he was with the other disciples in the upper room, Acts 1:13.
Jn 20:19-23 records how the disciples were together after the resurrection with the doors locked, yet Jesus appears among them. They were overjoyed. There was great excitement. We can also experience God's presence among us and be joyful! Invite Him. His presence brings joy. Revelation brings great joy. Allow Jesus to reveal Himself to you.
Jn 20:24-25. Thomas missed the meeting and hadn't seen Jesus. He needed more evidence. His hope had not yet been restored. Deferred hope makes you sick Pr 13:12. Titus 2 a blessed hope that should captivate. Longing fulfilled is living tree (Pr 13:12). Pet 1:3 a living hope.
Jn 20:26-29 stop doubting and believe. Jesus accommodated Thomas, He knew him very well. Jesus went straight to him. Thomas responded with a great confession, “My Lord and my God!”. Thomas became a strong and faithful believer. He went out preaching all over Asia as far as India. We have not seen, but we believe and we have faith.
Peter writes to the whole Church, 1 Pet 1:8, you have not seen but you believe! Their faith and belief brings great joy. We can see with eyes of faith. We must carry on in faith. Reality is doubt will come. it's the opposite of faith. 'Doubt' is in a lot of common sayings - there's no doubt, I don't doubt it... Mt 28:17 at the news of Jesus' resurrection some worshipped, but some doubted. Jude encourages us to be merciful to those who doubt v22. Mt 14:31 Jesus accuses Peter and disciples of having little faith after Peter walked on the water. Mk 11:23 Jesus instruction to pray, believe and not doubt. Jas 1:6 also teaches us to believe and not doubt. How we emerged from periods of doubt is important. Not everyone is healed. We overcome doubt by faith and revelation of Jesus. Increase the reality of Jesus living in you. Allow more of the empowering of HS in your life. He changes everything. Recognise truth in God's Word, search for it. Let it be your reality. Use the power of prayer. Cultivate your relationship with God. Allow your faith to flourish.

16/4 Harry Sprange Mk 10:45 Ransomed, Redeemed.

The hymn by Henry F. Lyte based on Ps 103 has the familiar line "Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven". The NT tells us that Jesus gave his life for many(Mk 10:45) /all( 1 Tim 2:6). He purchased our freedom in the words of the NLT. Redemption from evil/debt. Ransom, money paid to free hostage. There is a difference between the two. Different words are used in both Gk and Heb. Ransom is the money paid to free someone/something. Redemption is the freedom gained. Redemption is mentioned 11 times in NT (KJV e-sword), only 8 times in secular GK writings from the same period. Ransom occurs three times in NT.
Rev 5:9 states we are purchased by Jesus' blood; He ransomed us. Rev 14:3 there were 144,000 redeemed from the earth. Gal 3:13,14 Christ redeemed us from the curse, redeemed us for the blessing. When the Hebrews were in slavery in Egypt, God brought them out. He saved them from the judgement of Egypt and the punishment it would receive. Jesus blood protects us.

NIV v NLT (a comparison of the terms used in an older and newer translation)
Reference NIV NLT
Eph 1:7 redemption through His blood purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son
Eph 1:14 redemption of God's possession purchased us to be his own
Eph 4:30 sealed for the day of redemption guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption
Col 1:14 in whom we have redemption Son, who purchased our freedom
Heb 9:12 by His own blood having obtained eternal redemption for all time and secured our redemption forever
1 Cor 1:30 our righteousness holiness and redemption made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin
Rom 3:24 the redemption that came by Christ Jesus he freed us from the penalty for our sins

We have been paid for, bought. Blood is a symbol of life. The Church is bought by Jesus (1 Cor 6:20, 7:23). The question could arise "Who gets paid?" or "What gets paid for?". It's not the Son paying or paying off Father as the whole Trinity is working together for our salvation. It is sin that we need to be freed from Rom 6:23. We need to be set free from the power of sin. v23 in JB Phillips states "Sin pays its servants: the wage is death. But God gives to those who serve him: his free gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" There is not much mention about forgiveness in the book of Romans.
God forgives us and takes away our sin: Isa 6:7 (atoned for), 38:17(put behind), Ps 103:12 - as far as the East is from the West, Micah 7:19 hurled into the depths of the sea. 'Take away' also referred to in Jn 1:29(the sins of the world), 1 Pet 2:24. Removing sin is different from covering up. The Lamb takes away sin. 1 Jn 3:5 take away. Heb 9:12 eternal redemption, by Jesus' own blood. And in Heb 9:26,28 & 10:18, Rev 1:5(freed us from our sins). Heb 9:15 ransom. Sin costs. The basic issue is not about punishment, but payment for the damage done. When something is broken it has to be paid for. 2 Cor 5:21 He became sin (a sin offering) for us, 1 Pet 2 He bore our sins. Sin is what smashes us up. Rom 6:16 also Heb:10. Choose who you belong to, who you serve. Once redeemed, don't think about going back to old life.

9/4 Paul Younger Mt 21:1-11 Preparation.

Palm Sunday accounts appear in all four gospels. This gives it much significance and importance. A day that can be overlooked, but should be taken as very important. Preachers try to say something new and exciting. Obedience requires that they deliver the message God gives them. This message entails Preparation, Prophecy, and Praise.
Preparation is vitally important. We live in the age of the Internet where lots of memes offer us instant results and advice. Reality is that many endeavours fail due to inadequate preparation. Jesus sent two disciples ahead to organise the transport. He followed the plan God gave Him. The Father also prepared five centuries earlier and told Zechariah in a prophecy. In spite of our limited understanding, time is non-linear. Jesus fulfils the prophecy. People are motivated by praise. Jesus was getting what He deserved, recognised for who He was. Jesus must have felt good that day. The day didn't last, a day later they were condemning Him. The whole event was planned and orchestrated by God. His plan came together. People asked who He was. There was no apology, they declared who He was! We can do this every day... Jer 29:11.

2/4 Harry Sprange Mt 5:17-18 Preparation for Easter.

Preparation for Easter. A key word is 'accomplished' (God fulfils His purposes). The OT is difficult for most Christians. We need to understand that God is not different in OT and NT. The New is in the Old concealed, the Old is in the New revealed. God made everything good. Man was created for purpose. Good gave way to evil. There was deterioration, a flood, then start again.
Life continued and began to deteriorate again at the Tower of Babel. There was destruction, then start again. Mesopotamia was a centre of evil. Abraham was called from there to come out that he would be a blessing to the whole world.
The journey through the desert was in order to get Egypt out of people. In the new land is there is justice and righteousness. The Hebrews were to be prosperous and contented in order to make others jealous so they would think and follow the true God. There were to be no idols - Deut 4:15-20. The Israelites were to demonstrate to the nations that God is unique. We have assurance of forgiveness, something that is not evident in man-made religions. God gave them a land of plenty, yet they fail to walk with Him and they follow pagan ways. God raises a judge to correct and direct the people back to Himself...
Sin is perceived as wrong action; it is falling short of what God made us to be. There was another restoration of the relationship between God and the people. This was followed by more deserting. Solomon took 700 wives, he ended up worshipping their gods. The people were led into exile - Israel lost their land, the temple & and almost lost their identity. During the time of Ezra & Nehemiah the temple was rebuilt, but the glory of God did not return. They were still under foreign domination. Jesus came to people who had lost God and lost hope. Their God was silent for 400 yrs.
The 'Songs of deliverance' tell of God's plans. God speaks again to announce the Messiah. His glory is seen again. He pitched His tent amongst us. Sonship and relationship with God was restored. The name Jesus means 'God to the rescue'. 1 Jn 3:4 is not just personal sin, also corporate. Jesus brings a royal pardon for the whole country. They were back in His Kingdom. Jesus was the suffering servant described in Isa 53:11. The Jews missed this. It was clearly predicted, as Jesus reminded them on the road to Emmaus Lk 24:26. Jesus intentionally repeats the recurring history of Israel. Jesus cleared the temple, then proclaimed the destruction.
Jesus establishes God's new order: He is the walking temple. He is forgiveness and healing. Jesus was sent by Father. He sends us in the same way. To follow Jesus, take up your cross. It will cost us everything. Phil 1:13,29 etc remind us of the suffering involved. Col 1:24 our suffering for the gospel complete the suffering of Jesus. Jesus was not frightened of provoking a reaction.

26/3 Hugh Henderson 1 Cor 1:18-31 Power.

1 Cor was written to a people who were power crazy. They wanted powerful preachers. They preferred style and flamboyance over substance. Paul tries to show them that the power of cross is far greater than power of rhetoric. He tried to show people how to value the power of HS. Do we prefer those who emulate the power preacher or the truth that Paul teaches?
Ch 1:18-31. This speaks of power through weakness, through the gospel. What message, what method are we looking for? Is it shouting and banging and demonstration, or manipulation for money or philosophy and rhetoric. The message and the method must be the cross. v17 Paul urges: don't demean the power of the cross.
What message am I proclaiming? Folly or power? As believers we are being saved and the gospel power is working in us. Only the cross allows us to reach God. It was His initiative.
There were 3 groups. 1. The Jews demanding a sign. Heb 11:2 reminds us that we need faith to understand, not knowledge. 2. The Greeks searching for human wisdom, with power. To them this is greater than God. 3. The believers who have come from both groups. God is working in them. God can overcome the intellectual mind.
How is God's love and justice achieved at the same time? The cross is the answer. It is love and justice. God is not only Love, He is justice too. Jesus comes with power in weakness. God wants us to be different. We try to be the same as the world. This is full of problems. Humanly the King was very powerful. Jesus was different. He brought God's wisdom. He gave himself up. We are called to give ourselves.

19/3 Ryan Robertson 1 Cor 3:10,11,14-17 Fellowship.

As we journey with God Paul says we should be on solid food, but we are still on milk. There are divisions in the Church in Corinth. People were following men vv10,11 instead of focussing on God. Jesus is the foundation that we should build on. Paul was commissioned as a church planter.
vv 14-17. We are God's temple. We must be careful with doctrine. Different views can cause division; is this destroying the church? Focus on the gospel.
Gen 3:8,9 God calls to Adam and Eve to spend time with them. This shows that God's temple has always existed, even in the garden of Eden. It's where He dwells, it's where He meets with us. God looks for fellowship with Adam and Eve. When they were cast out, God set a guard at the garden to protect the sanctity of the place where He is.
As a baby Moses was in danger of losing his life. His mother's plan and actions are a story of faith. See what God can do when we trust Him. When Moses led the people towards the promised land. He comes down the mountain with the plans for the tabernacle, the place where God meets with them, Ex 25:8,9. God still wants to live among the people. Ex 33:7-11 is the account of Moses setting up the tent of meeting. God's presence, the pillar of cloud came down. God also takes us out of bondage so He can meet with us.
David continued the tabernacle worship and Solomon built the temple 1 Kg 6:19. There were cherubim in the sanctuary to protect the ark 1 Kg 6:23-28. God's presence was in the Holy of Holies.
Jesus comes to die for the sins of all mankind. Mt 27:50-53, the curtain protecting the temple was torn i two. God has always been working to bring people back to Himself. We now have direct access to Him through Jesus. Persecution can actually make people turn to God more. God's dwelling becomes among and within people. We are God's Holy temple. The believers have this as their experience. We need to fellowship with Him. We don't need a building, but we do need to gather. Rev 22:2,19 the tree of life, our fellowship with God.

12/3 Richard Hobson Phil 4:4-9. Joy

This passage is split into two parts. The first from vv4-7, and the second from vv8-9. Each section contains imperatives and exhortations. Both advise what to do, what to believe, and a promise. Section 1 promises the 'peace of God', in the second we are promised the 'God of peace' Himself. We need God to know His peace. The Biblical concept is much more than the dictionary definition. Wholeness. It's not just psychological. Fearing nothing. Not just state of mind. Where there is repetition, we are to take note. Show great joy. The fuel for this joy is in Jesus. Not in a medicinal way. The world can know joy. Family and sports and achievements. They are God's gifts and to be celebrated. Jesus Himself is a source of Great joy.
We often awake with cares and concerns. Paul says rejoice in the Lord. Keep looking and praying till you find it. Wait till His joy comes. Art galleries have works that we don't yet appreciate. Walking away doesn't help in understanding it. Keep looking at Jesus till you see Him. Reasonableness is HS fruit from being joyful. We panic, retaliate, control and be angry instead of being peaceful. We over-react instead of knowing His perspective. Paul knows our struggle.
Believe He is present - this is the best antidote. The Lord is not distant, He is at hand. Anxiety can hide this truth from us. When we know God is near, the reason for our anxiety is removed. Pray to God, speak to Him, ask for things. Find things to ask for and things to be thankful for. Ask Big things. Fill your mind with the creator.
The peace is not just getting the solution or making us feel better. It is to protect us, and help us overcome. The world tries to distract us. Believers are to be in Christ. We are one with Him. The peace protects our union. Loss of peace or wholeness in Christ can lead us away from Him. Things to think : to keep us in Christ.
So many distractions today. Find out what good thoughts you can instead of accepting whatever comes along. Look at scripture and all the good things around us. The world is broken. Eph 3:17-20 encourages us to think, develop understanding. Phil 4:9 do what you see & hear. Thoughts to be warmed by our hearts and acted out by us. The promise is not just the gift, also the Giver. We cannot do what Paul says without engaging with God. As we act our attention is drawn to Jesus.

5/3 Diane & Andy West 2 Cor 4:7-9 Wholeness.

The Japanese art of Kintsugi, broken and beautiful. What is emotional health? 2 Cor 4:7-9 we have this treasure in jars of clay. The Hebrew word Shalom encompasses wholeness. The combined Hebrew characters for staff & tent represent the authority within = heart. Is 61:1 we are sent to bind up the broken hearted; God is close to them, Ps 34:18; we honour God with truth in our hearts Ps 51:6,17. David's penitent prayer Ps 86:11.
Is it related to spiritual health? Relationships need feelings. We try to bury anger and fear, avoid conflict. Where does the anger live? Christians can find it harder to deal with conflict and strong emotions. Jesus has brought victory to all of this through the cross. Col 2:15 includes depression. We think we should know how to deal with emotional issues. We try to stay strong and safe. It can affect those around us. Walls go up in your heart. It affects and reduces your capacity. The barriers affect our relationship with God. Ps 86:11 our hearts can fragment.
Paul's struggle in Rom 7. We try to fix ourselves, but this doesn't really work. It can get to where you don't feel anything. Sometimes 'actions' are a denial of reality. Busyness is rarely good.
Christianity is unconditional love, God's grace. Personal relationships require more than: doing it yourself, keeping yourself safe. Choose God's protection. Take down the walls and hedges. This will bring more freedom and more joy. Choose wholeness, use 'spiritual disciplines'. Ranting prayer, listening prayer, soaking, silence, fasting are all methods to restoring wholeness.

26/2 Paul Younger 1 Cor 16 Giving & Caring.

Random jumbled thoughts? Bits and pieces. Be patient, look closely. Like starting a 1000 piece jig-saw, find with the corners, look for patches of colour. Paul talks about the collection. Give more to God. Not just money, but also fellowship and caring for His people. Paul is making a request for extra giving. For the saints who are lacking and have real needs. Helping people is something we should do systematically and regularly. We should also have something put away and prepared for the unexpected situations.
Our giving is to be according to our means v2. Do it in proportion to what you have. Give whatever you can. This gift is for Jerusalem.
The Church is all one family. We are part of something bigger. No matter how small our gathering, we are not alone. We are all His body. Paul gives a list of names. Who are all they? They are not familiar to us, but the church in Corinth knows them. Bob and Pam are still on the prayer chain. It's one way of supporting and caring for those you can. Is this the first prayer chain?
Give financially, prayerfully and practically. Fellowship is vital in church. Lean on me, it won't be long before I need someone to lean on.

19/2 Charles Sommerville Mt16:24-27 Cost of Discipleship.

We know the phrase, "There's no such thing as a free lunch". There is usually a cost for every thing in life. The entrance to the Kingdom of God is free, but the subscription is everything we have. Throughout life we try to cut corners. We want the minimum of commitment, but Jesus wants everything. Jesus demands are serious. Their Christian life is not all sunshine and roses. It's not an easy life, but Jesus is with us.
  1. Deny ourselves, our selfish desires, our way. Don't follow the way of money, material, power, popularity, success. Avoid having a critical spirit, resentment and grievance. Jesus is offended by these and we must get rid of them. He will expose them. Are we prepared to follow Him? Do we behave like Herod? (Keen to discuss, but reluctant to change.) It is personal. Sometimes our dream has to go.
  2. Take up the cross. We will experience what Jesus went through. We cannot keep quiet about Him, we will suffer persecution for this (to some extent or other). Keeping silent is not always an option.
  3. Follow Jesus, whole-heartedly. Partial obedience is not enough. Jesus must be Lord of all or He is not at all. 1 Sam 15: King Saul told to destroy all Amalekites. Perform God's Commandments completely. Anything else is rebellion. We try to rationalise, but 5/6 is still a failure. Eph 4:31: put all bitterness behind you. God will not use us if we are rebellious. Jesus was totally obedient to the Father. Taking the right road out of the valley of decision is costly.
  3. With God there is great cost, but the rewards of faithfulness are greater. His way is the path to peace and joy. Be firmly fixed in Him. Seek first His Kingdom (Mt 6:33). When we move towards Him, the blessing comes. Trusting may be easy, obeying will usually be hard. We will be judged and rewarded on our works.
Anything worthwhile is costly. We muat also consider what the cost will be of not being obedient? Don't blur the edges. People may not like what we say, yet they are watching how we live. Our lives should be attractive. Being a disciple will cost everything, but it is more than worth it. Take up your cross and follow Him.

12/2   No Meeting.

5/2 Jim Neilson Mk 14:27-52 Following God.

Annie had been very ill but was getting better, then suddenly she is gone. How do we deal with the loss. We often think that everything would be alright if only Jesus was here right now.
Mk 14:27-52. The disciples are in disarray. Jesus tells them that He will be taken and they will be scattered. The Gk word skandalizo, also gives us scandal. A trip hazard. 1 Cor 1:23 God's way is a stumbling block to those who are not following Him. Peter is in denial. The disciples still don't know or understand the plan.. We also think we know what God is doing, when a lot of the time we haven't a clue.
Hab 3:17, the fig tree has no buds; even when things are not going well we are called to rejoice in God. Looking back on many difficult situations we see God's presence was in our midst. The disciples are told to wait v32, 3 are called to pray with Him and witness His anguish. Jesus was in torment, not in control. The Devil's strategy is to cause us to doubt. The temptation is not to believe that Jesus will be killed and rise again. Prayer is key to discerning God's will.
The Bible is complex and we must approach it with humility. God's Word is to be treated with respect. Weigh up what God is saying. Explore the things you don't agree with. God wants to speak to us and include us in His purposes. We need to strive to understand what the Bible says, then believe it. The soldiers and the disciples had their own understanding and they were all ready for violence. Jesus declares no violence in His presence. Peter is ready for a scrap - ready to use his own efforts to bring God's Kingdom. We also manage to misrepresent God.
There is a lot of violence recorded in the book of Joshua. Josh 5:13, he asks the messenger "Are you for us or for our enemies?". The reply is 'Neither'. God is Holy. He is on another level. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, His ways are higher than our ways. (Isa 55:8) Eph 6:12, we wrestle not against flesh and blood. Jesus was considered a rebel leader by the authorities and many of the people and the disciples hoped He was too. We are to follow the way of the Son and leave the fighting to God.

29/1 Dougie McGeachin Ps 18:30-31 Following God.

2 Sam 22:31 tells us that God's Word is perfect, flawless. The challenge for mankind was to choose to follow God. People stray from God. They rebel. We either don't know or don't follow His way. His way is found in the image of the Godhead. Oneness is not unity, but community. This should be the image of the church. Divine Love, Fellowship and Community, Purpose.
1 Jn 4:8,16. Without love, we are not following God. There must be someone that God loves, this is the basis of creation. St Augustine describes the Holy Trinity as lover, loved and spirit of love. Pr 8:22-31 tells us that He delights in men. Jn 15:26 The Spirit from the Father testifies about the Son. 17:5 the Son has known communion and fellowship with the Father from the beginning. Koinonia is a shared life and community. Acts 2:42 the early Church continued this fellowship. 1 Cor 1:9 we are called into this fellowship with Jesus.
Divine purpose can be shrouded in mystery, but God reveals this through prophets, Rom 16:25. He reveals the mystery to us, Eph 1:7-11. 2 Cor 5:19 & Eph 3:10-12 God's plans are centred on Christ. Plans revealed through Lord Jesus. Holy Community extended to include us. Jn 17 this is Jesus prayer for us. His purpose for the church is to enlarge the circle of divine fellowship. This also includes the gentiles, Eph 2:13-15. It os for the whole family. This has been deposited in us, but it only happens when we live it out together. It is the DNA of the church.
Jn 1:13 we are born of the will of Christ. We are a new species. Jn 15:9 He loves us the way the Father loves the Son, He fellowships with us and sends us out - our purpose is His purpose. Jn 13:34,5 love, community and purpose is how we witness to Him and build the Kingdom. Rom 5:5 emphasises love. Church is wherever two or three gather in Jesus name... Church works in family groups where we can pass on what God has given to us. Eph 3:19, we can be fulfilled in His purposes.
Acts 15:4 is the report of what God was doing through the believers. What is our report of what God is doing? Break out from what is holding us back. Overcome fear. Churches can be cruise ships or battle ships. We are sent for a purpose. Jn 17. Apostle means sent one. Jesus was sent by the Father and we are also sent by God. Jn 5:37 confirms Jesus was sent. Lk 10:3, Mt 28 are instructions to go as those sent into the harvest. Passive laity has paralysed the Church. All believers are called to love, fellowship and purpose.

22/1 Andrea Mill 1 Cor 10:14-11:1 Honour.

What motivates terrorists and suicide bombers? They come from a society with code of honour. Their societies agree to arranged marriages, honouring the parents who know best. Families in these communities experience joint shame or honour according to the actions of members of the family. They have a mindset that they put into operation. The people of Israel live this way. We should read the Bible through a community filter, not individual thinking.
God is Father, Son, Spirit. They have different functions but each is giving glory to the others. e.g. 2 Pet 1:17. We are made in the image of God-head and are to live in community. Living in isolation can lead to being easily picked off by the devil. Individuality is destroying family life. We are called to love God and love our neighbour with an 'agape', unconditional love. Respect, love and honour are closely linked. We are to promote the qualities of esteem, worship, courtesy and obligation. Better to do it His way.
We can honour God in many ways. Obey the 10 Commandments. Ex 20. God cares for you and longs for exclusive access. Idols today are not so much statues, but more distractions including work and selfish desires. God longs for you to come to Him for your answers. Our language is an important way of honouring God. Rest on the seventh day. Old buildings have scripture inscriptions that honour God. Hold true to who you are called to be. Establish a pattern. Maintain a close relationship. Know His delight and pleasure in you. Pr 21:21 seeking God will bring life. Pr 3:9 honouring God will bring food. Acknowledge all we have comes from Him. Are we recognised as following Him?
1 Cor 10:24 seek the good of others. v17 we are one together. 1 Cor 12:14-26. We are part of a body. When we cause hurt we affect all who are connected, not just ourselves. Encourage and bless the success of others. How we treat other Christians is important. Consider the impact of wrong behaviour. Seek prayer and advice from those you trust. Serve, love, forgive, be hospitable. Don't speak against one another, Jas 4:11; don't grumble against others, Jas 5:9.
Honour your family. Heb 13:4 faithfulness in marriage and relationships is important. Sharing, caring. Eph 6:4 - train and develop children. Seek their best.
Respect authority 1 Pet 2:13. Respect and have consideration for your neighbours. Respect and consider yourself: rest, food/eating. All of these affect us and also others. Our personal choices affect society and they affect our spirituality. They impact our effectiveness as Christians. Balance respect for self with offence to others. You are not your own, honour God with your body. Attitude to sex is important. Our indulgence can harm our society.
Enjoy life's pleasure in moderation. We are spiritual beings in physical bodies. Be more spiritually aware. Gal 5:13 be free, but not irresponsible. How well do we honour others, self? None of our actions and attitudes are in isolation. Find your identity in God. Rom 12:1,2,10 - Do not conform to world. Go to God.

15/1 David Seel Lk 9:10-17 Opportunities.

New Year's Resolutions are not so popular as people realise they are rarely kept. Start of year is a good time to review what we have achieved. What are my aims for 2017? They must be considered alongside 'What is God's plan?' There will be challenges. Jer 29:11 is it time yet for the plans to unfold? Things might not look like it's working out. No matter what, God's thoughts towards me are good. Get to know His thoughts. Trust Him, it's what we must do. Learn how to respond.
Pens don't work in space. NASA spent $12m and 10 yrs to develop a pen that was effective. The Russians used pencils. Understand the problem. We try to fix things now. We should ask God first what He wants. Sometimes there is nothing we can do to make something happen. We should be asking, "How does God want to use this situation?".
Lk 9:10-17, feeding 5,000. There was no way this could happen without God. The disciples saw a problem they had to solve, not an opportunity for God to work. They were using their own understanding, not taking the opportunity. Jesus kept giving and it kept coming back. Eph 5:15-17, be wise, make the most of opportunities. Feel the fear and learn to trust. Learn God's way: opportunity mode, not fixit mode.
Eph 4:23, be made new in the attitude of your minds. Rom 12:2 do not conform to the world's pattern... Jn 5:19, Jesus does what He sees the Father doing. Jn 6:6, Jesus was testing Philip. He already knew the outcome. What was His purpose? He was training the disciples. Discipleship is not spectating, it is participation. All of us are to be engaged in Kingdom work. We are to grow spiritually as well as physically. Daily dilemmas will come. Be part of what God is doing. He is teaching us. Kingdom solutions will help us to reach people.
A God-sized assignment is coming. When we have a big decision to make, how do we respond? Open the door to Him, say yes to His way. Accept His invitation to be involved. God reveals what He will do, not what we need to do. This is how people see God at work. This keeps the focus on God, not us. Abraham, Moses, Gideon: lived and acted making God known. He tells us to make disciples of all nations. Jesus kept giving out, and the bread kept coming back, more than was given out. Jas 1 ask for wisdom. God's wisdom and knowledge are more than adequate. See things from an eternal perspective. What are we facing? What results are we looking for? We belong to Him.

8/1 Ryan Robertson Mt 26,27 Did Christ descend into hell?

Did Christ descend into hell? The Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed state this. Mt 26 v36ff. The account of Jesus suffering. Jesus was human and divine. He was betrayed by a friend. v38 He was worried in the garden. Human fellowship with God was broken in Eden. Jesus experienced that separation. v39 He asks to be spared. Isa 53:3-6. Jesus experience of hell was being despised, rejected. v40 can we stay awake and pray? v42 He agrees to the Father's plan. v46 He goes willingly. The council mocks Him. What does it feel to be rejected by friends and our community. Jesus was very human. Jn 11:35 At the death of His friend, Lazarus, Jesus wept. He has experienced all we will feel.
Jesus was the lamb that was sacrificed. For all the sin of the whole world past, present and future. Mt 27:45-50 it is finished, the cry before He gave up His spirit, implies there was no literal descent into hell. He ascended to heaven 40 days later. In the tomb His spirit was already with the Father. Jesus experience is what ours will be. When we die, our spirits are with God and our new bodies will come later.
Further study may be required to determine if Jesus literally descended to hell or just experienced what it would be like to be in hell.
The significance of this will also require study to determine any effect on our hope and expectations of eternity.
