30/12 Michael Palmer Jn 12:20-26 Corporate Mission
Gentiles come to worship at the feast. Jesus takes this as sign that He will be good news to the Gentiles as well as to the Jews. For Him, it means his death is near. God's purpose is to save all, He wants none to perish. There are 21 refs in OT & NT. Not everyone will be saved, but His desire is that they should be saved. Jesus uses a seed to speak of his death. Jesus needs to die to bring the fruit. When we love God less than we love ourselves, we will lose our life. Serving God includes mission and sacrificial giving. Where is Jesus most in NT? Among sinners. We go where they are? The Church must go out. Rowing boat and fishing boat go out, which one will be more effective. Do we love our lives less than purpose of God? What is our purpose? Are we a light in the town? Without mission are we a church? Be willing to change if we need to. We need to grow as a church.
23/12 Harry Sprange Lk 2:8-20 Peace of Christ
Eastern shepherds worked by starlight or in darkness. They possibly had a fire (certainly not for the whole night), but it is unlikely they had lanterns. Suddenly an angel comes in, it must have been terrifying. When people in the Bible accounts see angels they are afraid. Spiritual encounters are frightening. They are accompanied with awe. When angels arrive, they always say "Don't be afraid".
Next comes a promise of peace and goodwill. Is it a command for us to be nice to everyone for two weeks? The whole promise is "Peace to them who are in favour with God". Jn 14:27 Jesus leaves His peace with us as a gift. Jn 16:33 Jesus' peace is found in Him. Col 3:15 the peace of Christ is to dwell in our hearts. Take time to think through God's peace.
What is God's attitude to us? Two camps. Traditional view, typical in Scotland a few generations ago - God is always angry, all people are going to hell, few are saved. People live in fear of the 'Terrors of the law'. Then the pendulum swings to the contemporary view - God loves everyone, all go to heaven. You should know what you believe about the nature of God.
God is LOVE. Scripture is clear that God gets angry. He is angry at sin. It spoils his design. Rom 3:23 states that we all fall short. Sin is failing to obey God. At about 15 mths old we are able to run around and explore; we start getting into 'mischief'. Parents do get angry, when they care about children. Adolescence brings lots of emotions. Father's response could be discplinary, for mother it could be clearing up the mess. The consequences must be paid for. Parents often pay for children's mistakes. Sin had to be paid for. God had to put it right and pay the price.
Luke, v10, tells us that the Good news is for all the people. God gave, not to condemn but to save. His heart is to put right. Eph 2:14-18 restoration, reconciliation, destroyed barrier: God's peace brings us to Himself and to others. Jesus gives us the gift of peace. 2 Cor 5:18 God reconciled us through Jesus. We have this calling - the ministry of reconciliation. We have to respond to God. Man has been alienated from God. God is reconciling the world. It was man who moved away from God. The Father's heart is continually towards the son. It is father's who have to pay for the consequences of sin. God will welcome anyone; whoever comes, He will not turn away, Jn 6:37. Some do not believe this, however. No one is excluded from coming to God. When we have received His salvation, then we can receive His peace. Be humble enough to receive it. William Barclay paraphrases this as "and on earth peace to the men whose welfare He ever seeks".
16/12 David Seel Lk 2:1-20 Joy
Joy is not something that is talked about much or displayed these days. There is such a lot happening and it's a crazy time of year. There is also a huge lack of understanding of the Christmas story. Thankfully two Christian teachers have the opportunity to give a nativity presentation in a school in central Scotland this Friday. 50% of the pupils in the school are from families in deprived bands 1-3. We must share the joy of Christmas. It is God's desire that we share this.
Some family situations make it difficult to enjoy this time of year. Loss of loved ones; family hurts; shopping is stressful. Isaiah 8:22 speaks of a time of distress and despair - no time for the nativity. Today, there is not much joy in the news. Isaiah (ch 9) goes on to speak about the great light, an increase of joy. Mt 4:16 also refers to this passage where people who lived in darkness see the great light. Jesus knows how to help us. He has many titles (Isa 9:6,7). He can bring peace. He brings increased joy. With hope anything is possible. With Jesus anything can happen. Do we still wonder what is God's message to us here?
Bad things do happen to good people. In every circumstance God can bring joy. The joy of the Lord is strength (Neh 8:10). It's the same strength and power that brought Jesus back from the dead. God's strength is in our weakness. Don't wait till everything is worked out before you go to God, or go forward in Him. Christians read the Bible in a year or study certain books and passages. When they go back to these same passages, they see new things in the Bible every time.
There is joy in the Christmas story. Lk 1:14, 44, 47, 58, 2:10 JOY. We need to re-tell this story. Stay with the scripture version. Do you want to play Joseph? There are humorous stories of boys who did or did not want this part, but it is better to stick with the original script. How much of this story do children (or adults) know? Make sure the gospel is coming out. People must get saved. Read it more, pick up more... Lk 2:1-20.
Some claim they cannot feel joy, yet God is ready for people wherever they are at. James 1:1-2 affirms that pure joy comes from trials. Testing grows endurance. Happiness is a feeling that depends on your situation. Joy is lasting and independent of circumstances. Jesus tells us when stuff happens He is there. John 15 instructs us to abide in Jesus, this is how we bear fruit. Joy is a fruit of Holy Spirit. In God's presence is fullness of joy Ps 16, 1 Thes 3:9.
Sometimes we have to look for joy. There will be days when we behave like Eyore (things are bad and they're going to get worse), but we are meant to bounce back like Tiggr. Be full of joy. Don't worry about tomorrow. Matthew (Ch1:18-25) tells us the account of the virgin, the child, Immanuel: the fulfilment of the prophesy given by Isaiah (7:14). God comes near to each one of us. Why? Like the young boy who wanted to buy the puppy with the lame leg, because he also had a lame leg. We need someone who understands. God has experienced all that we face. Jesus understands. He experienced it first hand. Let Him take everything and replace it with Joy. We can shine with His light at Christmas.
9/12 Paul Younger Luke 1:26-38 Easy as A,B,C
Writing sermons is unpredictable. Sometimes it requires the "blood, toil, tears, and sweat" as offered by Winston Churchill. Sometimes the preachers secret 'little hammer' will crack open the passage into three equal segments; others require the rubber mallet. Ocassionally the inspiration just comes and it's easy as A,B,C. Abcde [pronounced absidee] is the name that has been given to 320 children in USA.
This is the 'abc' of Mary. Afraid, Bewildered, Complicit. Gabriel appears to her - this is not an everyday event. Zechariah, father of the John the Baptist was gripped with fear when he was visited by the angel. The angels appeared to the rough shepherds and they also were terrified. Mary too. When we are frightened, adrenaline is released. It gives us the impetus to take flight or to fight. The angel was not veiled or hidden, but appeared in full splendour.
Nazareth was a small, insignificant town. The angel's proclamation was astonishing and contrasted greatly with the location. At his command, Mary's fear subsides, but on hearing his message she is still bewildered. Mary realises that this is not humanly possible. The explanation is not that plausible for her, or for us. However the assurance is given in v37 "nothing is impossible with God".
Mary passes through fear and bewilderment, to acceptance. We know that arguing with God is futile. Now Mary was complicit with His plan, she goes along with it. The next time God asks you to do something, reflect on Mary. Her response was simply "May it be to me as you said". Mary was asked to bear God's child and she said yes. She must have wondered how Joseph would respond. His visit from the angel in his dream was later. Some churches exalt Mary unnecessarily, others overlook her obedient response. She deserves our greatest respect.
The smallest of words can have the most significance, e.g. if, but, yes, no. There are many testimonies of the people who said yes to God in the Bible. How do we respond to God when He asks us?
2/12 Michael Palmer Luke 2:8-20 Sharing Good News
The Angel brings good news, the gospel. The news of the King is for everyone. The shepherds go to Bethlehem to see what has happened and to share their story of the Angel. Mary pondered their testimony of what God was doing. We must share the good news. When we do, people will ponder what God is doing.
The church is not a cruise liner, but a battleship. When Jesus speaks to the people about the vine in John 15:8, they know He is speaking about Israel. We are told in v8 that much fruit glorifies God. Isaiah (5:1-7) writes a song about a vineyard. It mentions the 'backward' grape that doesn't produce good wine. The fruit God was looking for is righteousness and justice. He wanted people to treat others well and with respect and to deal fairly. This fruit expands the rule of God.
Bring the gospel to people. God is glorified with fruit. God weeps for the lost. He laments injustice. He prunes us so we bear more fruit. Rev 3:20 is about the fellowship and friendship that God wants with everyone. Don't stand idle, God is with us. Heb shama = hearing and obeying. John Stott, "Therefore, if we love our neighbors as God made them, we must inevitably be concerned for their total welfare, the good of their soul, their body, and their community." We are commanded to love one another. Preach the gospel and the Kingdom will come. Pray and do.
1 Make the most of every opportunity. Paul advises Timothy, 2 Tim 4:2. Talk to people you don't know on the bus. Use Alpha, introduce people to Jesus.
2 Pray Mt 6:10, prayer is mission. It opens the way for God to move.
3 Know your stuff 2 Tim 3:15 be prepared. Study and research the complex aspects of gospel.
Challenge for KCF before 30/12 - pray as group for strategy for sharing gospel. Put the strategy into practice. People need to hear the gospel, Rom 10:13-15. Share the gospel in ways people can understand. Go therefore... (Mt 28:19) During Advent, share the good news.
25/11 Hugh Henderson Rev 1,2 God sees
Revelation was written by John the disciple (according to most reliable sources). Prov 25:2 "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter." God knows what is happening. These are letters to churches in Asia Minor (Turkey). Jesus is letting John know that He knows what is going on in all the churches. 1 Sam 16:7 God sees into people's hearts. Imagine an open report on your performance being sent out to everyone. Rev 1:1-3. There is blessing for the one who speaks out the Word of God. In v4 the number seven is symbolic of perfection or completeness, all these letters are for the whole church; then and now. v6 reminds us that we are intended to be kings and priests, through Christ, to serve Him.
Jesus wants to reveal Himself to everyone (v7). Eternity is about being with Him. v9 shows that we share the Kingdom and this includes suffering and perseverance. John was a prisoner enslaved on the island of Patmos. It has no natural fresh water and is inhospitable. This disciple and preacher was spending his later years breaking rocks. This message is for every church generation, everywhere as indicated by 'seven' churches and 'Alpha & Omega' (v11).
In vv12-17 John sees Jesus in glory and reacts like Paul on the road to Damascus. [Dan 10:5-6 & Ezek 8:2 record similar descriptions]. We have no reason to fear, v18, the Devil doesn't have the keys, God does!
The lampstands are the franchise to be church. (If God is not in it, it's a waste of time.) The angels (God's messengers) are the pastors of the church. Listen up, Jesus is speaking to the church. Two of the seven are faithful, the other 5 are in severe danger. Lots of churches were planted from Ephesus. Their situation was similar to ours, Christian life in a sea of paganism. Ch 2. Jesus is looking after the pastors and walking amongst the people. He sees what we do. This church has people with spiritual discernment. Yet, they risk losing their franchise. They are encouraged to do the things they did before. Love is a verb. The church was being eroded by Nicolaitans. Spirit of Truth leads us into the truth of God's Word. Paradise is where God is. Just as in Lev 18:1-3 where God warns the people not to do what the Egyptians or Canaanites were doing, He wants them to obey His laws. Jesus loves us, He has the keys of hell, He wants us to serve Him. When we live differently, people will come. We are required to love people with God's love.
Mission International updates - Recent visit to Ethiopia, a land of political struggle. The prime minister is a born again, but the real power is controlled by the army. Pray that God keeps the doors open for the gospel. Kenya, another country with enormous problems, Church run by Johnson McGann keeps going with leaking roof and very limited resources amidst great need. The Disabled Kids project in Kayole (a slum) is greatly enriching the lives and improving the prospects of these outcast chiildren. Families consider them cursed. 40% of children in Kenya are disabled. Ahero church hosted leaders seminars. Elderly & Disabled project near Ahero is restoring respect and purpose to older people. Pastor Tom is concerned that while Jacob blessed his family before he died, these people are cursing their families. He is trying to transform this situation. Fish ponds provide a means of income, but need security to prevent theft. Kandaria school & water project. Narok prison, preaching to prisoners, even the high security prisoners were listening from their cells. Amazing testimonies: a driver blamed for being robbed served 16 yrs, considered it worth it to find Jesus. Iritet, church under the tree. Theo Mbazumutima in St Peter's Dundee on 29/11/18. Big Meal in Dec. will be held in 16 countries in multiple locations.
18/11 Iain Sutherland Phil 2:1-18 'Will','Power'
A scottish missionary born in China, with a memorial in Weifang; Eric Liddell. His athletic achievements are portrayed in Chariots of Fire, but his greater achievements were as a teacher, missionary and prisoner in China. The film is mostly accurate and doesn't dismiss the message of the gospel. Thousands in Edinburgh saw Eric off on his journey to China. He spoke at Gospel meetings in many towns including West Wemyss. His personal conviction was that the power needed to do what he did comes from within.
Phil 2:13 - God wills & works in you. He gives the desire. Eric humbled himself. Humbling is a hard work. v13 is a key. God is at work in us. It's His grace. Grace is more than past tense - what He has done in saving us from death to life. It is empowering us to live for Him now. It gives us character. God's gifts without character are dangerous. We must exercise the gift to activate the desire. The desire is in us, look for the energising.
Too often we try in our own strength. We need to access His gift. Step into it and receive the grace to carry it out. Spend time in God's presence. Iain had a picture of a book being taken off shelf, dusted off and looked at. It was possibly someone's Bible.
Unqualified? - this is not an excuse we can use, it's a title we can claim. Were the disciples qualified? They had been with Jesus. We receive grace etc by absorbing it in His presence. God is in you, at work. Ask for a release of energising grace. What made a difference in the lives of David, Samuel, Solomon, etc. God's work makes a difference in our lives and those around us. Desire what pleases Him. We get it wrong when we live in legalism and our own strength.
Heather encouraged us with this word - 1 Kg 3:5-15 God appeared to Solomon in a dream. Like Solomon, we should ask God for what we need to carry out the dream/vision that we want to fulfil.
11/11 Harry Sprange Rev 20:11-15 Reward (2)
This teaching (about rewards) was avoided by protestants fearing a misunderstanding of salvation by works. Rev 20:11-15 - everyone stands before God's judgement. Mt 25:31-34 describes people's destinies being determined like dividing sheep and goats. Final judgement is a theme that runs through all of scripture. Rev 21:27 nothing impure gets into the new Holy city. God won't force people to go into the new city.
Acts 17:24-31 God has to sort the world out. He is a God of justice. The Jews look forward to the day of judgement when they will be vindicated. God's justice will prevail.
Rev 20:1-6. A first resurrection is mentioned that seems different from the second resurrection. Some Christians will be raised before others on final judgement day. They will reign with Christ. 1 Cor 6:1-3, the saints will judge the world. Mt 19:28 the judgement of 12 tribes of Israel will be carried out by the disciples. Lk 22:28-30 at the 'last supper', Jesus confers a kingdom on the twelve, they will sit on thrones to judge Israel. Some believers are called to rule. It may be just the martyrs, or all those who overcome. All seven letters to the churches in Revelation end with the same phrase, "to him who overcomes". Rev 2:26 Thyatira, will receive authority over nations. Rev 3:21 Laodecea, sitting on throne, judging.
Phil 3:1, Paul writes a safeguard to the brethern in Philippi. He then tears into Judaisers who focus on the law and not the grace of Jesus and Holy Spirit. He speaks of knowing Jesus and His righteousness. Desire to know Him - this is how we will attain the resurrection of the dead (v11). The Greek literally says 'out resurrection out from the dead ones'. There seems to be a first resurrection prior to the general one. By the time he writes to Timothy (2 Tim 4), Paul knows he has won the prize. The New Testament has other hints of two separate resurrections. Lk 20:35 those worthy take part out from the dead. 1 Thes 4:14 -17 God brings Jesus and raises those who have fallen asleep; the dead in Christ rise first. Some believers are called to reign. A more accurate translation of Mt 22:14 is "Many are called, few are 'choice'". God wants everyone to be saved (many will reject Him), He selects some to reign and judge. God's reward for faithful service is to be in first resurrection. In the parable of minas (Lk 19:12-27), the trustworthy servants are appointed to rule over cities. Our reward is to reign with Him.
4/11 Alan Seel 2 Tim 1:1-14. God is at work
God did something in Timothy and in his life. Paul was very close to Timothy. Has God been working in you? Yes, He is still working in us. Timothy had a rich legacy of faith from his mother and grandmother. Instilling faith in children is a positive investment in their lives. Who has influenced me over the years?
God is still God today, Holy Spirit is still at work in our lives. Holy Spirit is a breath of fresh air. We have the potential to work out what God is doing in us. This is all because of His grace. He has conquered death, He brought us to life. His GRACE is amazing. Walk continually in this. Paul is astounded, yet confident in God's plan, purpose and promises (vv11,12). Ths is echoed in the words of the Daniel Whittle hymn, 'I know not why God’s wondrous grace, To me He hath made known, Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love, Redeemed me for His own. But “I know Whom I have believed And am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I’ve committed Unto Him against that day.”. We can be confident and push through. Keep walking in the faith. Not by sight. vv13,14. Keep in step with Holy Spirit.
Found Church are running 'Growing in Christ' groups to encourage those who responded at the Will Graham Celebration of Hope. People are coming back to God. Some of them can't get enough. Mentoring the younger people is a great blessing. People are responding after years of mothers and friends praying. It's not all going smoothly, but thay still come every week. Seekers are visiting the church. Follow up phone calls are getting through at just the right time. God is working, through much prayer. Phil 1:6 God will complete His work.
28/10 Jim Neilson Mk 16:1-8 God of the Possible.
Christianity is based on the historical resurrection of Jesus. In today's skeptical world, people are still coming to faith. Notice what the women were not saying on their way to the tomb. They were not expecting a resurrection. They were looking for Jesus, for comfort. Our world view expects science to fill in the gaps and provide the answers to life's questions. People are still looking for something.
The Turning is equiping people to go out to find those looking for answers. They ask two questins, "are you aware God loves you?", "what will happen when you die?". People are responding to the gospel. Raise your expectations. Western Christianity is in a ghetto mentality. East engages people over tea. Build relationships. Expect God to work in His world.
Conversion is God's job. Jesus was dead, but is not here. They women and the disciples discover the place is empty. They were looking in the wrong place. Many people are looking for meaning and purpose in the wrong place. The media pushes the view that there's 'no point'. Yet, God has placed eternity in the heart of men. Jesus came that we would have life. We will meet Jesus out there as we share His good news. He is already out there working in their hearts.
In youth groups today there are young people with mental health problems: anxiety, image, identity. They have no social skills. They are fragile, living unreal lives. Youth Alpha is connecting with these young people. We must engage with real people. As we build relationships, we earn the right to share the good news. Go and tell what God has done for you. These women are the first apostles. They are witnesses of Jesus life and are sent to tell their world. God chooses the foolish and weak to confound world. Don't be clever, just tell what you see. Turn to God at any hour. God's love is unconditional. Are we afraid? Be fearless. When Jesus looked at the crowds He saw helplessness, harassment, harvest. Be expectant, look in the right place.
21/10 Dawn Martindale Jud 10:1-6. Living for God with Faithfulness and Wisdom
These men are classed as minor judges, however, they are very important. The extent to which Israel followed God depended on the character of the ruling judge. Very little is known about Tola and Jair. they appear after a dramatic period in Israel's history where they abandon God and are rescued by judges who win great battles. 40 yrs symbolises a generation or completion after which God was usually forgotten. The type of judge determined which god the people served. These two judges fought no battles and ruled after Gideon. After 40 years of peace, there was a time of great wickedness. Abimelech was born of a concubine: he used money to hire scoundrels. He killed many people. Strife grew, people worshiped other gods.
Tola was a man of Issachar. These men had great wisdom. It is unlikely that they were generals. They must have had good character. They saved Israel from itself. They judged from different sides of the Jordan. They probably had others helping and their offices overlapped. They must have been fair and kind and well trained leaders. They had wisdom in abundance. 1 Chron 12:23-38 records all the tribes that sent fighting men to help David. The tribe of Issachar sent chiefs.
Tola was a Saviour (all the judges were). Tola means crimson or scarlet long stuff. The scarlet thread of Jesus' blood runs through the whole of scripture. His name means Jesus saving work is evident here. It is also evident in Rev 5:11-13 - worthy is the Lamb that was slain. It means forgiveness and mercy. God provided saviours before the situations arose. Judges kept Israel's focus on God. We find salvation in Jesus. Lack of fame is not a measure of lack of importance. Pray for understanding for ourselves and our leaders.
30/9 Harry Sprange 1 Cor 3:6-4:5 Reward (1)
Mk 10:1-31 hints of rewards in this life. Mt 5:12 tells of rewards in heaven. There are two thrones. There are two judgments. Every one will face God. Everyone will be asked "What have you done with Jesus?". In this passage the word used is for a throne. The judgment seat of Christ, only for believers, is like an umpires chair. They decide who wins and what the reward is. 2 Cor 5:10 shows that this is referring to believers. In Rom 14:10, the same word for throne is used. This is also written to believers. Be careful, popular thought is that heaven is a reward for being good. This is dangerous thinking. Salvation is a gift! RT Kendall - When God says "Well Done". R Forster - Gold Silver & Precious Stones.
Protestants have failed to preach good works from fear of risking danger of faith by works. The truth is heaven cannot be earned. It is hard for gift to be revoked. We will receive an inheritance if we work diligently. Paul speaks often of the games and prizes, 1 Cor 9:24. 2 Tim 2:5 prizes are only won if you keep the rules. Col 2:18 disqualified from prize. Heb 12:1 'run with perseverance'. 2 Tim 4:7,8 those who finish the race can expect a crown of righteousness. Push into to receive prize.
Three parables describe how we can earn kingdom rewards. Mt 25:14ff three servants and eight talents. (1 talent worth approx 20 yrs wages ≈ £0.25m). This is simply a comparison to illustrate an invisible Kingdom. We can increase our giftings by using them. Lk 19:11ff 10 servants, 10 minas (1 mina worth approx 3 months wages ≈ £1k). The Lord rewards by proportional responsibility. Mt 20:1-16 seems unfair to us. All workers receive the same reward. Some people have less opportunity than others.
What's the challenge for us? How do we use our giftings and abilities? Col 4:5 urges us to make the most of every opportunity. Beware if the Master is delayed Mt 24:48-50. We can lose as well as gain Eph 5:6. Paul 1 Cor 9:27. Discipline yourself. Quality control. Ensure you don't lose out. This is NOT referrring to salvation which is a gift. 1 Cor 3:6-4:5
23/9 David Seel James Ch 1-5 Moving Forward
God's Word is amazing. It is truth we can rely on so we can keep moving forward. We need to embrace change, - whether jobs, houses, family situations, different churches. We must be willing to go forward. Avoid wasting energy on what has gone, instead focus on building the new. Since 1955, 88% of the Fortune 500 companies have gone. They didn't adapt to changing economic conditions. The best advice is - don't stay still. Make changes. Develop what you have and who you are. What does this mean for me as a person and us as a church/community? James is writing to encourage and advise Church communities. He describes attributes that are to be desired.
A patient Christian will move forward Jas 1:2-4. Desire perseverance and maturity. Trials and temptations are reality in the natural. We can seek for, and find, peace and calm in these times. Ps 46:10, this is hard when we want to act and sort things out. Also Ex 14:14, get this! Keep quiet. allow God to fight, hold your peace and your position. We want to respond in the natural, God deals with supernatural. We are tested through trial, tribulation, worry, anxiety, trauma, woe, anguish... Respond with joy. It's not natural, don't get involved in the natural. Learn to be patient and move forward.
A practicing Christian will move forward. Jas 2:14-18. A gift or talent is meant to be used. Faith needs to be active. Love must be demonstrated. Faith and works together produce fruit instead of leaves. Don't think people aren't interested in how you respond to life's challenges or assume they don't want to hear the good news. We may know someone with an element of faith, but it is not overt. Look for the opportunity to engage them.
A polite Christian will move forward. Jas 3:1-6 church history would be different if people spoke differently. Gossip can be detrimental, restraint is healthy. Christianity is about character and integrity. The same tongue we are praying and praising with on Sunday is the one that will be in conversation at work or wherever on Monday.
A praying Christian will move forward. Jas 4:1-3. God may give us what we ask for. e.g. Hannah (1 Sam 1:10-15), Peter freed from jail (Acts 12:1-16), Hezekiah healed (2 Chron 30:20), Daniel asked for dream interpretations (Dan 2:17-20). Scripture is not just about the people it happened for historically. It is also for us, for now. We are to pray when things are happening, and pray more when things are not happening. All we do must have prayer as a foundation and covering.
A prioritised Christian will move forward. Jas 5:13-16. Wait for God to move. He will protect you. Let things fall into place, rather than contribute to them falling apart. James desires the whole church to move forward.
Giving to God does amazing things. Be faithful in your walk with Him. We have journeyed in faith together for more than 13 yrs.
9/9 Richard Hobson Ps 63:1-8 God's love
Ps 63:3 Your steadfast love is better than life. The culture around us says it believes in love, without really defining what it is. What does God's love mean really? We can make it appear to be really complicated. We confuse it with what we see depicted in Hollywood, or from life experience. This distorts our understanding of God's love. We sometimes wonder why there are times when we do not feel it? We question it's existence when we get hard times. What does life look like for those who love God? It's worth dying for.
There are three issues that affect our thinking: belief, knowledge and theology.
Knowledge can cause emotions - knowing that someone loves you can make you feel good. However, knowing who the person is may cause you to consider if you trust them. What do we know about God's love? Ps 86:5 it abounds to everyone, not just a small amount shared between everyone. Rom 5:8 Jesus died for us while we were still sinners! (Not so that we could be made lovable!) He declares that He loves us all through His Word. Do we believe this? We need to fight to keep faith, it is always under attack.
The Shorter Catechism is in two sections: Beliefs and Actions. We can pray with the disciples, "Jesus help our unbelief". We really need to believe the truth that God loves us. Do we fully understand His love? It is unconditional. It is infinite. His wrath doesn't mean He doesn't love us. Jesus died because He loves us, so that we could be like Him.
The Bible must be the source of our understanding. Notice that being thirsty is not doubting God's love. It drove David to seek God. The truth and his belief in that truth cause him to worship. God is unchanged no matter our circumstances or feelings. He is worthy. Don't forget all that God has done. What He has done in the past is all still relevant! Remembering feeds David's soul. Meditate on God. Focus on His truth. Fill your mind with truth, don't empty it as in eastern religions. Pray, speak to God. v8 cling to God, as tightly as He holds onto you. David doesn't ignore feelings. Acknowledge His love, even when your emotions are out of sync with the truth. Build on the solid foundation of His truth. Quiet times (personal daily devotions) should be noisy times.
2/9 Diane West Ex Ch 2-3 Wilderness
'Wilderness' evokes perceptions of inhospitable, dry, barren places. Moses and Jesus spent time there. A place for wild deer. Can also be linked to a 'time' of disfavour. Heb word close to the word for 'word'. A time or place where we are seeking and listening for God's Word. It can be a time or place of vulnerability, of preparation or revelation. Not our first choice of places to go or be, but can be a place where we find ourselves. An opportunity for learning or development, rather than where we would choose to be.
For Moses it was not a punishment. Sometimes we need solitude, silence, simplicity. To focus on progress, we need to minimise distractions. Ex 2-3, the account of a special child who was rescued and grew up as a prince. He fled to Midian, which is a wilderness place. Egypt is rich and fertile, but Moses was better able to hear God in Midian. 3:1-2. God trains Moses there. Moses learns to camp and survive and to rely on God for necessities, guidance, accepting change. Look for opportunities in these seasons. Isa 40:3-4 this may be the place where truth is revealed. John the Baptist is insightful, he is direct with Pharisees. Mt 3:1-2,16-17. The river appeals more than wilderness. Mt 4:1-11. When we are weak and vulnerable we really need to tune in to what God is saying or doing.
Jesus' calling and mission is very different from what the Israelites were expecting. The seeds of His manifesto, prelude to sermon on mount show a very different agenda. Battles can be won in the wilderness. Jesus goal was far beyond what came before. There are many parallels between Moses and Jesus lives and ministry, through rivers and deserts. Yet Jesus brought a very different Kingdom.
What about when we find ourselves in the wilderness? Learn lessons on how to rely on God. Learn how to help others in the wilderness, learn from them how to respond and maximise the opportunities and experiences. Choose to put yourself in a learning or challenging situation. Revival usually comes after a drought. Time to pray again for our nation. Fast when you are strong. Find out what is appropriate for you. Ask "What opportunity should I be looking for?". What are we asking God for? Pray and seek for Daily bread and Kingdom come!
26/8 Paul Younger Isaiah 43:1-2 You are not alone
When someone is found dead, on their own in tragic circumstances we say, "What a horrible way to go". For those who made a commitment to God, no matter what happens, they are not alone. We may not fulfill our promise to God, but He will always fulfill His promise to us. Whatever situation you are in, you are not alone. Isaiah 43:1-2. Sometimes preaching can be easy; just repeat what God says. His Word is "I will be with you" v2. You are not alone - this has nothing to do with aliens, extra-terrestrial life-forms, or even soul-mates. It's about God's presence.
Deut 31:1-3, Moses led the Israelites for 40 yrs, but is not going into the promised land. God promises to go with them. Jesus makes the same promise in Mt 28:20, "with you always to the very end of the age". God is not fickle. His Word is His bond. Forever. Moses died 1400BC. God's words are echoed in Heb 3:1-3. Jesus is greater than Moses, and more faithful. This is God's promise to us. Sometimes we wonder if we can trust the person making the promise. Do they really mean it? Do they have the power to make it happen? God is able and He is sincere. It's a personal promise, v1. We are named. It's a promise for all times and circumstances. When life is good it's good to know this, in times of crisis we need this reassurance. Isaiah is speaking to the hard times; the times when we feel alone. God is more trustworthy than our own feelings. We can rely on Him. Be assured every day, you are not alone.
19/8 Iain Sutherland Dan 6:1-28 Dare to be a Daniel
There are many parallels with the society Daniel was living in and our culture. Like him, we must chose what do we compromise and what do we not. Daniel held the course in a difficult age. Secular society likes to criticise religion and went to great lengths to report the 'collapse' of the Brethren Church. A survey of Scottish religious faith indicated that the church was as good as finished, the majority did not pray and were not religious. The survey, however, was carried out by humanists with only 1000 responses. Inconclusive evidence is portrayed as truth. We, like Daniel, are in a secular humanist society. v2 Dan was one of the officials appointed, at the age of 80. He did good work, but jealous colleagues conspired against him. Don't miss the trigger for him being in the lions den. Daniel made deliberate and considered choices. He chose to pray.
2005 Indonesia, Open Doors, 3 women - Dr Rebekka Zakaria, Eti Pangesti and Ratna Bangun - started a Sunday School. Muslim objectors started a mob, and had them arrested. Bus loads of Muslims were brought in for the trial. They were put in prison. They set about serving the prisoners and the guards. They started a church in prison. When they were released early, they went back to the prison to disciple the new converts. They are modern-day Daniels.
Be aware of your circumstances. The same deception threatened Daniel and these three women. The administrators and satraps buttered up the King to trap Daniel. They lie and pressure the king. It's the same tactic to the one used in the garden of Eden. Realising his error he king prays and he fasts (no food or diversions). He hopes that God will spare Daniel.
What do we learn? Dan is diligent in all things that are healthy and wholesome, just like Joseph was in Egypt. Daniel chose to keep praying. We are called to pray. We are encouraged to press in and pray Lk 18:1 ff. Daniel had a local house of prayer for his community. He is faithful and depends on God. the lion's den was meant to be his 'tomb'; it was sealed. God moves from beyond the grave, resulting in a pagan king telling the whole creation to fear God. How do we dare to be like Dan? Get back into a rhythm of prayer. (See Daniel's prayer in Ch 9.)
12/8 Harry Sprange Col 3:1-15 Your Kingdom come.
The Kingdom is near; it is within you. If Christianity is only a belief system, then it has to complete with all the other belief systems like Islam and Buddhism. Christianity is more, it is supernatural! Heaven is where God is. This is not a place of future escape for us after we die. God is in eternity. Eternity is not even a dimension of space. Eternal life doesn't begin at the end of our earthly life. Jesus defines eternal life in Jn 17:3. It is to know God here and now, today. The unseen world is real.
We grew up in a scientific age that wanted proof for everything. Now we rely and believe in the unseen world. Scientists are expected to make new discoveries. What they are discovering is history, it already exists. 200yrs ago x-rays were unknown, 120 yrs ago they were discoverd, in the last 50 years they have been put to use. We are grateful for discovering what's already there.
God is there, He lives in eternity. He is still creating. The universe is still expanding. Do we really believe in a supernatural God? Gen 2:2 is God still resting? Is the resurrection the 8th day? Heb 1:2-3, He upholds & sustains the universe that He made. God is still active. God is infinite, there is no end to what we can discover about Him. Are we bored with Christian life? Too many, especially young people are. Kingdom Kids felt that the Church didn't cater for their spiritual needs.
How do we discover more about God? We know that there will be no sin, sickness, demons etc. in heaven. Find out what you have and live in it. Seek things above where Jesus is - in Eternity. This is the dimension we should be living in. 2 Cor 4:18 what is unseen is eternal; v17 eternal glory. The riches of His glory, made known to us, Rom 9:23. God supplies our needs and blessings from where Jesus is. Live as a Son in the Father's house. Do it now. It's all in Jesus. Jesus, the radiance of the Father's glory. We are being made like Him; we become fully human. Live without fear or anxiety; Paul (Phil 4) declares this is possible. This is our calling. Miracles are just a part of it. Rom 14:17,18 The Kingdom is... joy in Holy Spirit. Serving this way is pleasing to God, approved by men. Be attractive to people. We can please God! Living life in the supernatural dimension. We must live it to demonstrate it. Overflow with hope.
5/8 Michael Palmer Mk 2:13-22 Marching on
We are marching on, in victory, in Jesus' triumphal procession (2 Cor 2:14). We are bringing the Kingdom. Mk 2:13, He went to the sea again. Mk 1:16 notes a previous visit Jesus made to the sea. 2:14 tells us He noticed Levi. Don't be afraid to revisit somewhere or someone with the gospel. Fruit may come from already covered ground.
He taught the crowd that came to Him. Jesus got alongside people. He explained things to people. Making disciples means getting involved. Preach and teach the Kingdom, even to outcasts and the despised. Jesus came after the unlikely and unclean. Don't decide that God won't save them. Eating with someone is a sign of friendship and acceptance. Share life with sinners. God befriended you while you were still in sin. Jesus is for sinners in order to make them right with God.
The church is meant to be growing, a hospital for those who are sick. We are meant to be healed, then go out and bring others. Get well and be effective for Jesus. v18 Disciples do not need to fast while Jesus is there. The New Covenant is not just a patch up of the old one. It is completely new. The Church needs to be dynamic for the Kingdom to be fulfilled. Create the environment for Holy Spirit to come and bring the Kingdom. Otherwise there will be a split. Welcome Holy Spirit, be open to change. v14 God may give us a Levi that we need to welcome. There may be criticism from religious people. Where is prayer for lost? Be an ambulance to bring in the sick. Be fervent in prayer. God answers prayer.
It may be God is saying to you today "You are not forsaken".
This Fellowship is to be a strong ship carrying captives to freedom.
29/7 Dawn Martindale Col 1:1-23,4:2-6 Prayer
In this passage there is no obvious distinction between Paul's prayer and his letter. It was probably Paphos who started the church in Colossae. To start the process of correcting this church Paul prays. He encourages them (v8) Paul teaches them about the spiritual realm and authority (v16), the lordship of Christ (v18), reconciliation to God(v20). He explains the truth to combat the false teachers that are giving them rules.
Paul's instructions teach us to pray with Jesus at centre, be alert as you pray, pray persistently. Traditional teaching on prayer was to be quiet, it was a lonely venture, a chore. Daily life can distract us from prayer; feelings can also hinder prayer. Prayer is fundamental to Christian life, but our plans can come under attack Rom 7:22-25, Paul's confesses, I don’t do what I want. Col 4:2 William Barclay, "Paul would never write a letter without urging the duty and the privilege of prayer on his friends. He tells them to persevere in prayer. Even for the best of us, there come times when prayer seems to be unavailing and to penetrate no farther than the walls of the room in which we pray. At such a time the remedy is not to stop but to go on praying; for in the man who prays spiritual dryness cannot last.". Paul urges us to keep alert, be 'wakeful' and be consistent.
Eph 6 - part of the armour is to pray in the Spirit. In v18 it is the same word for alert as in Col 1. Pray actively. Christian prayer has a focus on Jesus. Col 1:22 we are His friends, get closer and more relaxed. Paul prays they will grow in prayer. Spend time with God. Get to know your friends. Secret to good prayer is knowing Jesus. Jesus opens God's treasures. The more we know Jesus the better we pray. Give pride of place to prayer.
Col 3:1-2. Do all things in name of Jesus. Give thanks 4:2. Thankfulness is the reason for prayer. Pablo Martinez, thankfulness in all aspects of prayer. Intercession is important. Paul asks for prayer to know what to say. He uses opportunities to witness in prison. Prayer is not an emotional crutch. Paul went to Jerusalem even though trials and trouble were waiting. Prayer can also include lament; show your emotions to God. Jeremiah was frustrated and poured it out to God (the book of Lamentations). True friends can cope with this. Prayer gives strength, produces good. Prayer leads to a fulfilled life. Serving and acting are also prayer. Prayer can be done walking. This can trigger responses. Words or images can help. Sometimes they trigger confession. Wrestling, Jacob in Gen 32:22ff, is prayer. Prayer can be done in 'offices' (set times), you can use short meditations. Pray your way. Pray.
22/7 Alan & Ellen Seel Lk 18:18-23 Bearing Fruit
Ellen - Ps 92:14 is a promise from God that His people will still bear fruit in latter days! Found Church, Larbert has been very welcoming and very involved in the Celebration of Hope with Will Graham. FotN not going ahead. Many went forward at CofH and Found have been following up 317 contacts! Growing in Christ is about to start for about 20 new believers. Phone call follow up has heard some great testimonies. Holiday club has touched lives. God's promises are being fulfilled. We should not be afraid to call promises into being, remind God what He said. See the fruit. Take Courage (Hillsong). Stay steadfast.
Alan - Every day is a new day, choose to go forward. Take your opportunities. Show what you have. Lk 18:18-23. The rich young ruler wasn't ready to receive new life and take the opportunity. There were things he couldn't give up. 19:1-10 another rich man encounters Jesus. His heart was changed. He took the opportunity to be saved. We can touch other lives, but we must keep our responsibilities: reading, prayer, devotion. Follow the guidance in Eph 5.
See the opportunities and go for them. Don't focus on the problem. Position yourself. Overcome the difficulties. Tell your story. Ask God for opportunities. Be bold, be active. Get rid of the fear, carpe diem. Have your antenna up. Push out your comfort zone. Gal 6:10 do good to everyone in your church/families. Col 4:5 extend grace and favour to outsiders. We want want see God doing great things in our lives. CofH was a big success.
15/7 Paul Younger Mt 6:28-34 Don't Worry
Preaching can be hard, figuring the meaning. It can be the easiest thing. High schools in the 70's had language laboratories where pupils studied languages by "Écoutez et répetez" (Listen and repeat). It's how we learned. We need to listen to God and then repeat what He says. We worry about lots of things. We have lists of things to worry about. A scene of 3 little birds can remind us of a song, "Every little thing's gonna be alright".
When Jesus spoke crowds gathered. v25 universal timeless words. We have foodbanks and homeless shelters 2000 later. We find more and more things to worry about. All these worries build up and have an effect on us. Worry doesn't fix things, but can lead to more issues. Old man of Hoy, a rock stack. The weather worrying away at it disconnected from the island. It may collapse very soon. Let the train take the strain. God knows all about your worries, let Him take the strain. Son of captain on cruise ship, slept through storm. Is my daddy on deck? Trust in Father. People today scorn faith. We feel compelled to do something. We can and should leave our worries with God. We need to unlearn wrong ways. Phil 4:6, worrying is negative and destructive. Prayer is positive. There is truth in Paul's words. We worry when we forget God's work. There is a peace that only He can give.
8/7 Jim Neilson Mk 15:40-47 Service, Sacrifice, Expectation
This passage is about Jesus funeral. Mark wants us to know that Jesus is dead. Hanged bodies were not allowed to be left overnight. They had to be taken down. There were a number of women who served and supported Jesus in His ministry. They played an important role in a male dominated culture. Many women were significant in Jesus' ministry. Martha, by sitting at His feet, was elevated to a male position in a teaching scenario.
In Jewish society, women were not recognised as reliable witnesses, in Mark's report, these the women are the witnesses that Jesus sends to tell the disciples. They are the first apostles. (They have seen first hand and are commissioned to tell others). Joel declares that men and women will prophecy.
We are all called to service. There are many different gifts and lots of ways to serve We follow the example of Jesus who came to serve.
We are all called to sacrifice. Joseph of Arimathea was a prominent member of the Council. He was high up in society. He probably lost all this for the sake of Jesus, yet he knew he had to do this for Him.
We all need to have expectation. The stone was rolled over the entrance to the tomb. This was the end. There was no more expectation. For them this was final. Jesus is dead. The tomb is sealed. Our society today has no expectations. We need to let them see what the Christian life is. We are real people. Consistency is important. Relationships build over time.
1/7 Michael Palmer Phil 1:27 Striving Together
The Greek meaning of the word translated here as "gospel" is the proclamation of the arrival of a new king. Jesus is bringing his Kingdom. He brought us into His Kingdom when He saved us from dominion of darkness, Col 1:13. Acts 26:18 tells how He turns us from darkness to light and turns us from the power of Satan to God.
1. "Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel" means to behave as citizen of heaven. Philippi was a Roman colony where the people were classed as Roman citizens, yet they were not in Italy. We are not in heaven, yet we are already citizens of God's Kingdom. This highlights our meaning to God, how much we mean to Him. That's how much God loves us. Be united in this meaning of who you are and how much others mean to God also. This helps us to function as the Body of Christ.
2. The "faith of the gospel", means the faith that comes from the gospel. Faith comes by hearing the gospel. Be united in faith in Jesus, it leads to being united in meaning.
3. United in purpose, striving together for the gospel. Striving has the implication of contending athletically for something. We need to be helping each other to preach the gospel and bring others to faith in Jesus. Carrying out His Word. Mt 28:19 is the command for us to go.
All of this is encapsulated in Communion. Jesus' death shows how much we mean to God. We share a common cup and the bread together. We receive it by faith.
24/6 Richard Hobson Lk 22:31-34, Acts 14:21-23 Strength
How strong are we: physically, spiritually? Do we need to feel strong? How strong were the disciples? Lk 22:31-34. What would we say if Jesus said this to us? Sifting is a brutal, beating process where wheat is pulverised and thrown about. Satan was targeting Peter - spiritually. All the saints are targeted by Satan. What was Satan's plan? Jesus prayed that Peter's faith would not fail. Col 1:21, Satan wants to alienate us from God. Jesus has reconciled us to God and wants us to continue in faith. If faith fails we lose stability. Then we look elsewhere for support and ignore the gospel.
Peter became fearful. Can our faith fail? Did Jesus' prayer go unanswered? Peter's faith didn't fail. Jesus prayed for Peter and He prays for us, Heb 7:25. Although Peter sinned, he didn't lose faith. He was overcome with fear. He succumbed in a moment of weakness. Returning to Jesus shows that faith has not failed. Judas betrayed Jesus but didn't turn back to Him. Repentance is the key. When we turn away completely, that's when faith fails. All the disciples fled and left Jesus, they all were overcome with fear. Peter was self reliant, note the tone in his response.
It's easy to talk about how much we will sacrifice. CS Lewis, "You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you.". More than good intentions are required to do exploits. Peter's bubble burst when the cock crowed.
1 Peter 5:10 look to God to get you through and restore you. Humble yourself before Him. Understand where strength comes from. Peter understands that strength comes from God. We are also the work of God. Be firm in you faith. Acts 14:21-23 we are naturally legalistic, we try our way to earn our worth. God works through our activities and actions. Encourage one another, don't lose heart. God is sovereign and carers for us. Be realistic, Satan wants us too and will send many tribulations to overthrow us. Our feet must be on the solid rock of Jesus. God works through the leadership that Peter established in the Churches in Acts. Prayer is key, the most profitable thing we can do, since God answers prayer. Commit one another to the Lord. We are in His hands. God's activity will strengthen us. Fellowship with God and each other strengthens us. it's OK to feel weak. Remember our Saviour prays for us. Look to God for strength.
17/6 Paul Younger 1 Tim 3:8-13 Deacons/"Gi'es a job"
1 Tim 3:8-13 gives advice on a leadership structure. As parodied by a comedian on BGT, the test for UK citizenship would be better on catchphrases rather than History. The catchphrase appropriate to this passage might be "Gi'es a job" When applying for a job, you respond to an advert which typically consists of a job description and a person specification. This is what we have here.
Deacon can be used in different settings to mean roles. What is it's original meaning: do they manage, do they have authority? Gk literally means servant. What does the role involve? Acts 6 records the resentment and discussion regarding fair distribution of food. The Twelve gathered the disciples and appointed seven with appropriate skills, spirituality and wisdom as waiters/servants. It's the same word used in 1 Tim 3:8,12. It's a different form of leadership. Elders serve by leading, deacons lead by serving. Phil 2:5-8 develop the same mindset and attitude as Jesus. The word translated as servant in v8 literally means slave. Are we better than Him?
What kind of person is suited to this post? It's a high spec for a servant! Definitely not a drunkard or dishonest person. Someone holding to the truth. A person full of Holy Spirit. We should be of the highest calibre, whatever role we have. Paul advises to test them first. The key is - if we are repentant, God covers us. The term translated here as wives, could be a generic term for women. See Rom 16:1, Phoebe was a deacon. The same standard applies. Deacons are to be faithful to their wife and responsible for their family. Often the simplest meaning of a passage is usually the correct one. Eph 5:1, Jesus is the supreme example of servant-hood. A daunting task? Possible by God's grace! Deacons (and others) should be thanked for their service. We should uphold them in prayer.
10/6 David Seel Acts 9:10-22 Courage
For David and Eleanor, this seems to be a season of joy and restoration. After 15 yrs full-on is it time to take a rest? Reality is, to do this requires as much courage as any of the challenges over the years. Courage such as the planned move to America, being available and ready to go. Courage such as swimming in the loch, canoing and abseiling at Loch Earn. Courage to keep going when failure seemed imminent in Three Peaks Challenge.
Overcoming adversity. Scripture has lots of examples. Mental, moral strength, shown by Moses, Deut 31:6 and Joshua, Josh 1:6. Courage doesn't mean an easy life. It means God will be with you. Ps 18 - He will protect and preserve us. Isa 4:6. Ps 23 God's presence.
Acts 9:10-22. The account of Ananias. His courage showed he was ready. Just like Samuel, 1 Sam 3, his response was here I am Lord. Like Isaiah, 6:8, Abraham, Gen 12. Christians today need the courage that Paul longed for those in Rome to have, Rom 1,11-12. We need to listen more to what people around us are saying, so we can find the connection to engage with their conversation. Be ready to answer anyone. 1 Pet 2:15-16, be ready. Have something to say, find something good to do. How anxious do we feel when we know we have to approach someone? We are convinced that people don't want to hear what we have to say. 2 Tim 1:7 we do not have a spirit of fear. Courage causes Ananias to be realistic and voice his concern. It is important to know what is happening around you. Paul was known to be violent. Courage caused Ananias to be receptive to God's word and to step out in obedience despite the risk.
Trust God to go ahead of you. God's purposes are higher than we can imagine, Isa 55:8. God's Word will always produce fruit, Isa 55:11. We get to take this Word out to the world. We must study it so we know what it says. The greatest part of all this is the amazing things that happen. Paul's life is transformed. Paul knew what was going to happen in his life, through the things God showed him. How many lives can we change? Be patient, tactful, but courageous and speak. Ananias's role is small, but significant. Our perspective is limited. Rely on God's voice.
FotN not much change recently.
Someone this morning, with regard to a significant aspect, has believed a lie. The answer is to trust God.
3/6 Harry Sprange 1 Cor 5:6-11 Communion
The liberal church has been described as where “A God without wrath brought men without sin into a Kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a Cross.” H. Richard Niebuhr, The Kingdom of God in America. Richard Niebuhr was one of two German brothers who escaped to the USA. Reality is that Christ, the passover lamb, is sacrificed, as declared in 1 Cor 5:6-11. This passage is on church discipline. The festival is the 'Last Passover' of Jesus and His disciples.
Ex 12:1-13 is the first description of the instructions for the Passover. The Hebrews were to make the selection of a lamb out of their own possessions. Many years later lambs may have been bred specifically for sacrifice, perhaps in Bethlehem? Jesus was the baby born to die, to fulfill God's purpose, Jn 6:38. Jesus takes away our sin. Consecration of the sacrifice comes four days after the selection.
At the slaughter, the blood was collected. This is strange for us, but the Hebrews understood that life itself is in the blood. In the garden of Eden, God clothed Adam and Eve with animal skins. Animals' blood was shed, their lives were sacrificed to cover the sin of Adam and Eve. Rom 6:3 - there must be sacrifice for sin. In Egypt the people were instructed to enter their homes through the portal of blood on the lintel and door-posts. It required action and faith. By faith they were to act in obedience to what God has said. Faith is the response. Eph 2:2,3 refers to those who don't act in faith as sons of disobedience.
We cannot avoid what we don't like in scripture. Do we believe in original sin? Augustine and the reformers spoke of this. Jesus death was not to deal with our guilt, but our sin. Mankind is alienated from God. Sin needs the death of Jesus for us to be free.
All the Hebrews had to eat the passover lamb. God's feasts are centred around roast meat. The land God gives them is flowing with milk and honey. Beware dietary fads that contradict scripture. Through this meal God was strengthening them for the journey ahead. Absorb what God has done for you. We need to have Jesus inside us. The instruction to eat the passover meal in haste, ready to run, shows God's desire for an urgency to obedience. The bitter herbs to be eaten with the meal signify the discomfort we experience on the journey. There is a cost to pay. We may need to sacrifice to be receive what God has for us
27/5 Dawn Martindale Lk 10:25-37. Good Samaritan
The parable of the Good Samaritan. How can I help? Does this inspire us or make us feel inadequate? During a retreat after completing college, God spoke into the tiredness. We are all wounded travelers. Without hurt we don't know healing. This parable ends well. The Samaritan had the resources. Ps 18:1-24 God comes to our rescue. This is a Thanksgiving Psalm. David had been attacked, vv 4,5. Have we been the traveler?
v19, a spacious place - physically and emotionally. A place of freedom and safety - to be yourself. Wounds bound, oil and wine poured in. God is there. A place of rest. Learn to be free. When we are rested, restored and filled we can go out and be the Samaritan.
By our SHAPE (Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, Experience - Rick Warren) we go out and do God's work. The Samaritan continued on his journey after taking care of the wounded man. Keep discovering who God made you to be. Henri Nouwen The Wounded Healer. Be hospitable, knowing who you are. Listen without judging. There are no boundaries in the Kingdom. Let people discover who they are and understand their own wounds. On our journey we need to develop a love for God, to be healed and know how to help when needed.
20/5 Andrea Mill Acts 1:4-8 Pentecost Power
At 'Light the Fire Again', April '18 in Toronto, Randy Clark declared that God was restoring holiness in the church, starting with Scotland. What is a holy life? holiness is the quality of God that sets Him apart from the World. It requires sanctity and purity. Believers are called to be like Him. How does my life compare to non-believers? What sets us apart?
13/5 Iain Sutherland Jn 7:37-44 Living Water
Jesus' Word to us comes in ways we can remember. There are many 'Kingdom Couplets' - Covenant and Kingdom, relationship and responsibility, fasting and prayer, abide and be fruitful (Jn 15).
Water is also at the heart of many of Jesus messages. Mostly a sign of Holy Spirit, but also necessary for life. Jesus promises living water. Jn 4 after breaking the social barriers, He tells of living water. Water can clear channels and remove rocks and rubbish.
We are often constrained by the world's limitations and what others say we can't do. God is able to grow us beyond this. Heb 12 speaks of a huge cloud of witnesses willing us on to greater things.
Acts 9, the growth of church, starts with addition, then moves on to multiplication v31. Canals (constructed by humans) can constrain and restrict life and growth. God's flow is more like two river banks with grace and truth on either side. If we drift too close to one side or the other we can run aground. Jesus came full of grace and truth. We must try to navigate between the comfort of Holy Spirit and the fear of a holy God. The Church in Acts experienced a time of growth and peace. Today the Church is growing fastest in India, amidst much persecution. In our waywardness, we zigzag from bank to back. The banks direct us. As we stay in the flow we will grow. It's a journey of grace, peace, mercy and fun. How's my balance? God is comforting and Holy.
As preparation for Celebration of Hope with Will Graham in Falkirk. Community Action Project were giving away free water, no strings attached.
Is God speaking to you through this picture? - Sorting out clothes, pushing some to the back of the wardrobe since they are no longer required. Does God want you to mothball something or more likely not to mothball it?
6/5 Hugh Henderson Ezekiel 1:1-28 Presence of God
At the time of Ezekiel, the Jews had the temple in Jerusalem and God was in a fixed place. They had forgotten God could be mobile (during the time of Moses and the tabernacle). When verse 1 was written, they were now in exile in Babylon, the temple had been destroyed. Ezekiel can hardly describe what He saw in his vision. The chariot of God, was on the move. Isaiah also had a vision of God on the move (Isa 6).
God is not constrained to the Ark and the Temple, He is with the people in their time of exile. He appears with light: flashing, bright, fire. When people were in trouble God goes to them.
Abraham couldn’t keep the covenant. God deals with the covenant Himself through Jesus. He appears here as the burning fire pot. He appears to Moses in fire at the burning bush, God speaks to him. The light of God lit up Moses face so that it shone after being up mountain. In Num 6 (the Aaronic blessing), the presence of God shines on His people, He is turned towards us. In Mt 17 Jesus face shone at the transfiguration.
Jn 1:9-14. Jesus, the true light, brought the presence of God with Him. We see His glory in transformed lives. Heb 1:1-3 Jesus is the radiance of God's glory. Tim Keller encourages us to invite Jesus into our lives, not as our PA, but as our Saviour. Through God's new covenant with us, our wickedness has been imputed to Jesus and His righteousness has been imputed to us. His presence is with us wherever we are and in whatever situation we are in. He came that we might be rid of sin. Know that God is with us at all times.
Summary update of Mission International projects
29/4 Michael Palmer Rom 6 Bound to Sin?
The Greek word hamartia, used for sin, means missing the mark, not hitting the target. If we sin, we are failing to meet God's expectation to love God and to love people. The first five of the 10 Commandments are about loving God, the next five are about loving people. 'Sin' (attitude) can be thought of as the root of tree, while 'sins' (actions) would represent the fruit. God's plan in Jesus (Mt 1:21) is to save us from our sins. The Gk word for salvation 'sozo' is to deliver. Salvation is deliverance, healing and making whole.
The enemies of the Christian are Satan, sin and death. John tells us in 8:34 that every one is a slave to sin. Jesus has made propitiation (1 Jn 2:2 - NIV atonement): a satisfying sacrifice that turns away wrath. Rom 3:25, atonement, through the shedding of his blood: to cover up. Heb 10:12 the once for all sacrifice for purification; inward cleansing and transforming 1 Jn 1:7. Jesus removes sin (Jn 1:29). He gives forgiveness for sin through His blood (Mt 26:28). Heb 10:18, sacrifice is no longer necessary, sin is dealt with. Sin is defeated.
Zech 13:1 speaks of a cleansing fountain washing away sin and impurity for the house of David and Jerusalem. Jesus was born into the house of David.
22/4 Paul Younger Mt 16:13-20 Questions
(A brand new second hand sermon.) Every day in life we encounter questions, from the trivial to the important. "To be or not to be?" The real question is here in this passage. Who do you say Jesus is - that is the question!
Using the Internet to find out who Jesus is, you can get 43 million results on Google. Answers from Jehovah's Witnesses, Church of Scotland, Mormons... v13 is the 'easy ' question, say what you hear; what is everyone else saying. Jesus refers to Himself here in the third person, as the Son of Man. People had expectations, right and wrong, about who God would send and how His kingdom would come. It was a little-known title, unlike "Messiah".
Daniel, Ch 7:13,14, 'saw' the Son of Man coming on the clouds. Everyone worshiped Him, His Kingdom was not destroyed. People are slow to catch on. John Baptist was already dead, yet some said it is him. Even Herod wondered if Jesus was John, back from the dead. (Not everyone remembers the first ghost in A Christmas Carol - Jacob Marney). Elijah was also expected to return. Jeremiah preached the same message as Jesus. People were confused. They were far short of understanding the full truth about Jesus.
The next question Jesus asks is more direct, towards the disciples. He wants to know what they are thinking. There was no response until Peter speaks up. He has the right answer. The answer comes from God. Christ is a title, the equivalent of the Hebrew word Messiah, which means anointed one. Peter's eyes were open. People today are more questioning of the relevance of the Bible, than being concerned about answering the questions in the Bible. How we answer Jesus' question determines our destiny. No one can answer it for you.
15/4 Jim Neilson Mk 15:33-39 Mystery of God
It’s All about Jesus, yet science and modern life try to explain everything away. God is mystery and beyond our thinking. This passage starts in v33 with another Roman 'disposal ' of a troublemaker. Crucifxion was how they dealt with rebels. This is strange - it's dark at noon. It was not an eclipse; it was the wrong phase of the moon. In Genesis we read that darkness was over the face of the deep. The Hebrew describes the earth as a desert submerged in water. Satan wants to destroy all God has made. This darkness was possibly a premature celebration of evil. In Mt 5:14, Jesus says we are the light of the world. We are stars that shine in the sky according to Paul (Phil 2:15). There are millions of stars!
Don't despair in the dark. Jesus gives a cry of despair. By quoting the first verse of Ps 22, Jesus is actually making a reference to the whole psalm. See v29 every knee will bow before Him, v31 Jesus has done it! This Psalm is the prayer of the righteousness sufferer. In the midst of suffering we are also inclinded to ask 'why?'. God doesn't plan suffering. Evil cuts Jesus off from the Father. God is 3 in 1. He takes on Himself the whole sin of humanity. We ought to wrestle with this. Paul 2 Cor 5:19 God, through Christ, reconciled the world to Himself. We barely understand how God punished Himself for our wrongdoing.
The testimony of someone who was in a life-threatening situation, where their life flashed before their eyes, was to thank God for saving their life. He uses circumstances to show He loves you. His plan for your life is way beyond yours! Retain the mystery of God. Leave the hard stuff to Him.
Another strange thing in this passage is the Temple curtain was torn from top to bottom. This signifies that the way to God is open. There is no real need for the temple now, in fact God's glory had departed the temple years earlier. Where 2 or 3 meet, we are the temple. Are people gasping in wonder? (as they did at the stone temple).
Strange things continue to happen: a rough Roman soldier responds with the declaration that something amazing has happened. Today Muslims are getting visions of Jesus and turning to Him. God is always on the case, even when we don't see it.
Easter Sunday 1/4 Ryan Robertson Mt 28:1-20 Go and Tell
There is lots to encourage us this morning. We should expect the unknown from God. v1 Mary didn't expect an empty tomb. v5 It was after great sorrow that the angel gave Mary a message. Learn to let God speak to you through angels and saints. v18 Jesus has been given kingly authority. Scripture is filled with promise and blessing, we moan wondering when they will come. He is coming back. v7 The Angel urges the women to run and take the message. v19 We are commissioned to take this message, yet we fret and fear about how it will be received. v8 The women hurried to bring the message. The message (v6) Christ is Risen is good news.
Jesus led a life of service. v9 The women meet Jesus on the way and worship Him here. v10 Jesus repeats the instruction to go and tell, do not be afraid. There will always be those who mock, jeer and discourage (vv 11-15). Through His blood we inherit salvation, through baptism we identify our lives with His. God's love can reach into the hardest heart.
Be faithful to God's calling and commands. From the eleven disciples who were obedient and waited for Pentecost, the message went to the whole world. Hold onto this: Jesus has all authority (v18), we are united to Him and have authority. Give Him glory by proclaiming the gospel. God can reach anyone. Continue to develop and nurture new life in Christ. We have hope in the power of the resurrection.
Palm Sunday 25/3 Alan Seel Mk10:46-52, Acts 3:1-10, Mt 5:13 Making a difference
Palm Sunday, Jesus goes to Jerusalem. Why does He go on a donkey? It fulfills the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. It was the start of an amazing week. The people welcomed Jesus. This was good news. As people who are recipients of good news, the gospel we should also be making a difference. We should be improving and changing situations. Who are the examples who made a difference? Billy Graham held 417 crusades. He came to Scotland in 91 and had a big impact in many lives. Jesus made a big difference in the life of blind Bartimaeus, Mk10:46-52. In Acts 3:1-10 the disciples made a difference for the crippled beggar. These are huge examples. What can we do? Mt 5:13-16 declares we are salt and light, having an effect on those around us. This is what we should do.
18/3 David Seel 2 Kg 3:9-12 Obedience over Understanding
Some things we just don't understand, (two very different diagnoses from two doctors). Some things appear strange to us. We do strange things: touching hot things to see if they are hot, talk to animals as though they were human. Like the Karate Kid, we don't understand the training methods to strengthen and develop our skills and abilities. We can be content with practicing until we get it right instead of practicing until we don't get it wrong. A job or situation can leave us wondering what we are doing and questioning why we are doing it, but they can bring us into contact with the right people or experience to move us forward. Often we realise later how the parts all fit together to bring us to where we are now, particularly when we haven't understood it at the time.
God will often lead us through things the we can only overcome by obedience. We must learn to go to Him first in everything. Obedience to Him is rewarded with His abundance in our lives. The kings of Israel, Edom and Judah spent a week wandering around looking for water (2 Kg 3:9-12). They struggled with the hardship of their situation for 7 days. Then, eventually they decide to seek God's prophet to find out what God is saying. The 3 kings were not following God very closely at all.
They had seen that Elijah had been used by God to resolve situations and knew that Elisha was his servant. When they send for Elisha, he is reluctant, has a bit of an attitude and he gives the King's a talking to (v13). He points out that he is serving God, implying that they were not although they should have been. He calls for a musician so that he can prophesy to them, v15. The instruction is to put themselves to work, to dig ditches, to get ready for what God is going to do. v17. They probably didn't understand what was to happen, but their obedience was required. God honoured their obedience: He provided the water and the victory.
Why should we go to God first? What do we need to be able to pray? Prayer comes from a right relationship. We can go to Him at any time. Seek first the Kingdom of God. Do what God asks, even when you are not sure. Move towards Him. James tells us faith without works is dead (Ch2v14). When we show God faith, He shows us faithfulness. We receive blessing as a result of obedience. Keep digging the ditches. The vision for Fellowship of the Nations church is that it will be known for worship, song writing, youth meetings, midweek worship & fellowship and life giving preaching on Sunday morning. A home for children. Mission trips. Reaching out to others, a refuge. Where do our dreams come from? Do something you don't understand. If we do what only we can, God will do what only He can.
4/3 Harry Sprange Rev 1:1-6 Prophet, Priest, King
The book of Revelation is all about the revelation of Jesus, not the end of the world. 2 Tim 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, the man raised from the dead, the gospel (JB Philips, "Remember always, as the centre of everything, Jesus Christ, a man of human ancestry, yet raised by God from the dead according to my Gospel.") He is the culmination of history. Three introductory characteristics of Jesus are:
25/2 Paul Younger 1 Tim 1:12-17 Saved!
The passage tells of the Lord's Grace to Paul; true but perhaps dull. A more dynamic title is 'Saved!'
Saved from sin. Sin referred to in v15 means 'fallen short' and also in Rom 3:23. It is the sense of not being good enough, not up to standard. The penalty of sin is horrendous. Paul is very aware of this as he states in Rom 6:23, "the wages of sin is death". He was saved from sin and death.
Saved by the grace and mercy of God v13,14. These words are seldom used today and rarely in this context. Acts 22 tells us that Paul studied and trained in theology. Grace and mercy are free and unmerited. Jesus saves the lives of those who deserve death. It's like the condemned prisoner who deserves to die being allowed to live. Paul was the worst of sinners. Acts 9 recounts the murderous threats and violence towards the church. This grace is amazing. It saved Paul and it saves us.
Saved for service v12, the violent man became a teacher and missionary for the gospel. 1 Cor 15:10, God's grace was working in Paul as he taught and preached. All Paul's work was for God's glory, v17. We probably haven't done what Paul has, but have we served and glorified God?
18/2 KCF Joshua 7 God's Way
It's good to check out any situation before you proceed, but don't assume you know how God wants you to do something. Ask Him how any task is to be accomplished, even if you think you can do it 'easily'. Even small losses are significant. We should feel sorry for disobeying or angering God, but we also need to stand up and take responsibility. God will always defend His honour. He will judge His own people. He is a holy and just God. We are to be a holy and just people. The secret things we do will be found out and exposed. Any one of us could be tempted by something that is attractive. Sin brings consequences. Everyone is affected, everyone has a responsibility to uphold justice. It can be difficult upholding what is right and dealing with disgraceful behaviour. God's promises are great, but we need to walk His ways to receive the blessing. We should en-courage each other and give testimony of what He has done and is doing.
11/2 No Meeting
4/2 Alan Milnes Judges 6:1-7:25 Seeing things as God sees them
God calling Gideon. Judges 6:1-18,25-27. This passage encourages us to see things as God sees them. People at that time were doing what was right in their own eyes, with little heed to the things of God. Gideon was a wood cutter. He was afraid of having food stolen and was hiding the resources he had. God comes, ignoring the 'reality' of the situation. God wants us to focus on who He says you are. We are His children. Jn 1:12, we are born of God. Mt 6:25-34 do not be anxious or worried about the things of this life; seek first the things of God. We must learn to see ourselves as God sees us.
Gideon is called to speak to His own family first. This can be hardest, but is good training and preparation for what we are called to do. 6:31 tells us Gideon's dad stands up for him against the godless officials. Rom 12:2 we are to prove God's will. What is God's will for Leslie Baptist, who will He call to LBC? Moving forward in God requires covering in prayer.
Gideon requires some more assurance, v36 and lays out a fleece. God confirms that Gideon is not just imagining this conversation.
Ch 7:1-17 is how God reduces the army (which is already many times smaller than their enemies). We must not take the credit. We are called to obey, not to be successful. God is merciful to work with a less than ideal people. He is gracious to those who need more reassurance. God doesn't depend on us, but He works through us. It's absurd. John Piper and the church leaders wer called to start a 'Gideon Venture'. The project was to cost £9m and complete debt free. They were also told to send their best people to start another church. The result was a thriving new church and an effective project. Ch 7:16 - 25.
It was God's victory but Gideon had a strategy. HS works through our plans. God can see us through great challenges. Evaluate what/why you are doing. God patiently grew Gideon’s faith. Ordinary people can do great things. Act in obedience, deal with the first things first.
28/1 Hugh Henderson Jn 11:1-16 God's delay
Jn 11:1-16 is the most strange situation. What would I do if a close friend/family member was seriously ill? Go immediately! There are 2 main parts to John's gospel. a) seven signs, b) book of His glory. Lazarus' resurrection is the 7th and most amazing miracle. Jesus was very close to Lazarus, Mary and Martha. John, referred to himself as the disciple Jesus loved. His statement was more about the love Jesus showed them. Jesus doesn't love anyone any less than He loves John. When we know this we respond to Him. Meditate and grasp Jesus love for you. In the upper room (Jn 15:15), Jesus no longer calls the disciples servants but friends. Jesus was friends with Lazarus and his and sisters. Why did He delay? Things can be done while God's light is available. Jesus must have used great constraint. Jesus had already healed many sick people, yet this was to be a greater sign.
Roman general, Quintus Fabius Maximus (Cunctator), who delayed attacking Hannibal as a tactic and was able to overcome his great armies. In our situations we ask why God is not acting/moving now. He brings glory through the timing. Abraham & Sarah didn't wait (Hagar)... eventually the time came for Isaac. Gen 50:18 was the fulfillment of Joseph dream in Gen 37. The delay was for Joseph to work out issues. In Acts 16:6,7 Paul was delayed prior to having a dream about a man from Macedonia. God brings people into line with His purposes. Hab 2:3 God will reveal at His appointed time, we must wait for it. It will fit in with God's timing and purposes. Pray to catch on to what God is doing. Sometimes His promises seem to contradict His providences. Isa 55:9 God says, "my ways higher than your ways". Jn 13:7 Jesus promises that we will understand, later. Jesus is the same today, yesterday and forever.
Projects/updates : Oct/Nov 17. India - Hinduism everywhere, statues. Government want Christianity to be eradicated by 2025. Helping and resourcing the orphanage, leading pastor training. Bringing food supplements to rain forest dwellers who only have rice to eat. Snakes thrown into churches by Hindus to injure Christians. They read the Bible together line by line.
Myanmar is Buddhist. Again, worship of god's is prevalent. Buddhist monks go around begging. God's design is that we work to provide for ourselves and to give to others. An orphan who went to Bible college 2002, now his uncle wants the money back with interest. Pastors conference. Big Meal started in Mozambique, more children at all other venues. They get food, games and Nativity story. Uganda water supply to school. Dug to 40m but no water, however it was found nearby. A food store built. Attack is always a threat. Health issues need prayer.
21/1 Andrea Mill Isa 43:16-44:5 New Ways
God is doing new things. Isa 42:9,10 "See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you. Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them." He did amazing things in the beginning. Gen 1:1 - 2:3. Ponder the God who made all this, and set a pattern for us. God made us like them: male and female in the image of God. Are we meant to be just as creative? Can we speak and make things happen? We should try to remember all of this.
Isa 43:16-44:5. "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past." Learn from the past, but don't stay there. God will act in new ways. God knows man's wickedness Gen 6:5, although Noah found favour with God. Why do we forget God's ways? Throughout history mankind has done this. Why do we disrespect all He has made? Sodom and Gomorrah, Egypt, the desert, Joshua. We can learn from OT. We see that God loves people and keeps on loving them. He tries new ways to bring them back. Jesus reminds people of the laws in the OT, but shows that it's no longer about rules, but relationship. Jesus ushered in the new covenant. He brings new understanding of God's ways. Power through HS in us.
There have been lots of revivals, but we remain in a spiritual battles. We are all attacked. Do not dwell on past. Jn 10:10. Jesus wants us to live abundantly. Jesus has a plan for our lives. We can experience negativity or disease even in the womb. Our problems must be brought to God, otherwise He can't help us. Call to Him. This could involve forgiving others; it can be very hard. Bad things do happen. Deal with them to be able to enjoy abundant life. Don't let the hurts have power over you. Remember the God who made you will help you. He wants you to trust Him.
Remember the spiritual dimension. Watch out for each other. Demons have assignments to destroy relationships. Generational curses or other traits can affect us too. God is teaching us a new way. We are not meant to stay the same. We are called on a journey, partnering with Him. Jas 1:2-5 work towards maturity, not lacking in wisdom. When problems and trials come, go straight to God. He is the creator. He can give you the creativity to resolve the problem. He has so much more to give than we ask for. Seek Him for how we are supposed to do Church, outreach, ministry. Ask God for the answers you need. Don't dwell on failure. Don't focus on circumstances. The Devil will bring you down. Focus on Jesus, worship, praise, rest. Even where there is persecution the Church is growing through ordinary people. What message is God giving us? He has a mission for each one of us.
14/1 Jim Neilson Mk 15:16-32 Crucifixion
When you enjoy taking time to read, you realise that the more you read the less you really you know. God's ways are not our ways. In Eden the temptation was for man to be like God. A lot of the we project ourselves onto who we think God is. We are supposed to trust Him. This is faith. Faith grounds us in His love. Mk 15:16-32, the Jews had returned from exile, but were being ruled by others. This period is known as 'Pax Romana'. The Romans were king of the time. Yet underneath this apparent peace there was brutal slavery. Caesar was revered as king and as god. The crime Jesus was being crucified for was 'being king'. Much violence was endemic amongst soldiers.
Gen 1-6 explains the consequences of man's disobedience. After Noah, God promises not to destroy everything. During the time of Joshua, there was lots of violence. Ps 145 - How does this God resort to violence? On the cross Jesus endures the violence of the people. Jesus takes all this violence on Himself. In the battle for Hacksaw Ridge, the conscientious objector saved 70 lives of US & Japanese soldiers. In this violent world, Jesus calls us to reach out to the dying and lost. We're not meant to declare judgement, yet Christians can't help doing this. It's God's job, but we try do it too. The criminals beside Jesus were not petty thieves. They were effectively terrorists. They were getting what they deserve. Lk 23:14 there was no basis for the charges against Jesus. We are punished justly. One of the criminals insulted Jesus, the other said, "Jesus, remember me". Jesus bears both their sins. He makes no comment, neither should we.
NT Wright in "Surprised by Hope" considers Jesus crucifixion and notes that Jesus was acquainted with grief. God cares deeply for each one of us. We don't really know who will be with God for eternity. We trust God will do the right thing for everyone.
The Temple was a key symbol of Israel. The Chief priests mocked Jesus regarding His Temple prophecy. Jesus redefined the Temple. God lives in His disciples Jn 14:23. Mt 18:20 God is present where 2 or 3 gather together; Jesus is there. The whole body is like a building built together. 1 Pet 2:5 living stones being built into a temple. The old temple became corrupt. Jesus replaced religion with relationship. We are meant to show the world what God is like. Jn 13:33,34. Develop a culture of self denial rather than being self-centred. Take up your cross. Trust in God. In coming year, be an anchor, be sensible, Church, disciples. We become the temple. This is reality.
7/1 Ryan Robertson 1 Pet 3:13-22 Hope.
At New Year, we have hopes & expectations. How can we interact? Mt 28 is the call to go to every nation and make disciples. What is next? Teach new disciples, He is with you. God is with us to the end. v14 God will reward. Bible turns things to God. Praise God when you are suffering. Unity with God will see us through. How do we stay true to faith and be gentle? God is coming after people. We welcome them, but stay true to His Word. Grow in Christ, be continually growing. v17 suffer for doing good. God's Word needs revelation to understand and to act out. We are united in Jesus' death, His resurrection and His suffering. This gives us the insight we need to follow Him.
Ministry is for people. v19 Preach to all people, especially those rejected by society. Do this in the gentleness and humility of Jesus. God opens doors. God will use us in unexpected ways. Minister to those who are pushed aside. Noah built a huge ark, but only 8 were saved. Work with one another to bring God's message. HS helps us to pray when we don't have the words. Read the Word fully. Baptism is not salvation. It is a proclamation that we are forgiven and united with God. We are in His presence, and subject to Him v22. Make this your aim.
